Band comes alive in new surroundings Despite a somewhat slow start, concert band pulled together and gave some outstanding concerts. Freshman band got its start this year performing at Homecoming and the Marching Band concert. The spring concert was the highlight of the year with both bands performing in the new Cultural Arts Center. One of the more daring feats accomplished by the band was to test out the new hydrolic orchestra pit's lifting power. Freshmen join orchestra ranks - S. ' 1 ci .xi Z ig A .4:.,.,.K i l i i The addition of freshmen was the main reason for a larger orchestra this year. Almost one third of the members were from the class of '81. Practices on the small Dunham stage started off the year, until the choirlorchestra room was completed. The musicians performed at fall, Christmas, winter and spring concerts, for St. Charles Women's Club, the musical i'Fiddler on the Roof , dedication of the Dellora A. Norris Cultural Arts Center, and baccalaureate. The orchestra went to hear the Chicago Symphony. Participating in the Fox Valley Music Felstival were eighteen of the members. Aiding Mrs. Jean Grotberg with directing duties was Miss Lynda DeBeir, student director, who graduated from St. Charles' class of '74. She is a trumpet major at Northern Illinois University. Nlarching Saints suffer wet year We now direct your attention to the north end ofthe field as we present the 77-78 edition of the St. Charles High School Marching Band, under the direction of Jeff Childs? Muddy practices, rained-on games and lack of a band room could not dull the spirit of the Marching Saints. Despite half-time downpours, the faithful band members attended all the games and occasionally outnumbered the fans. However, things turned around when the Saints revived the tradition of the marching band concert. Lots of band boosters crowded into Dunham gym for the concert November 15. The Flags fChilds' Chicksl, Twirlers and Drill Team joined the Marching Saints and the newly formed Freshman Marching Band. During the marching season, the band traveled to Northwestern University to attend Band Day, September 24. Bands from all over the state attend each year to see a special NU Wildcat Marching Band show and a Big 10 football game.
