Saint nine miss by one St. Charles' varsity baseball squad established a record for most wins ever by going 21-4 for the season under the direction of head coach Wayne DeMaar. The Saint nine, in addition to sweeping all six non-conference games and capturing the Upstate Eight Conference championship with an 11-4 mark, brought home the Plainfield Regional title and a second-place finish at the Lockport Sectional. With a state playoff berth on the line, the Saints dropped an 11-2 decision to Joliet West in the Lockport Sectional championship game to miss by one game of having the chance to go to Peoria for the state playoffs. Seniors Dan Gierke 1shortstopJ, Steve Bosene 1center fieldj, Dennis Warford 1third basej and Brad Wickersham 1pitcherJ were named unanimously to the UEC all-conference team. Warford 13337, second baseman Mike Liesman 1.3031 and left fielder Mark Grossklag 1.2991 were among the regulars in leading the Saints in hitting. Ftosene topped the team in doubles with six, while Warford swatted a club-leading two home runs. Liesman batted in 17 runs and Warford swiped 24 bases for other team leaderships. Wickersham and Brinkman carried the pitching staff with seven wins apiece, while senior Greg O'Berry added five victories. Wickersham wound up with a 1.22 earned run average and 66 strikeouts in 62 innings pitched. 7 .- ' . a . n., .
