Saints basketball: the gals Some of the girls' basketball team's lack of popularity stems from the better and faster boy's teams. Although both girls' teams finished deceptively low in the conference, the team ended the season with an overall record of 12-12. The 77-78 varsity squad, coached by Mary Fasbender, was bounced out of the state race when they lost the regional title to Rochelle. But, their record is misleading, for as coach Fas remarked, HThere were four games in which we lost by only 1 or 2 points, and if we had won . . . Leaving the varsity squad at the end of the year were six seniors, Sue Pope, Re Matalonis, Molly Peddy, Kathy Lyle, Deb Bednarz, and Heidi Babel. Although four of these six were starters, next year will bring back juniors Caroline Carlson, Angie Mabry and sophomore Cristy Carlson. Of these players, Sue Pope and Re Matalonis were voted on the All-Conference Team, while Molly Peddy and Caroline Carlson were given honorable mention. The Saints had more players voted to this team than any other. The JV team ended the year at 9-10. V ,,,.., . .
