Wrestlers finally capture Upstate Eight title fAbovel, The Saints' varsity wrestlers stand in the order of their weight classes following win- ning the conference title. fFtightJ, Dave Wells, one of two wrestlers who went downstate for St. Charles, helps hold up the banner given to the squad during an assembly. The St. Charles varsity wrestling squad did something February 3 at West 7 Aurora High School which had never 7 been done before. Five Saint wrestlers LE brought back Upstate Eight li t Conference titles in leading St. C 0 gg 97. Charles to its first-ever conference N F E R E Q title. Bill Berg l155i ' W'W 'f and DeWayne DeBerry 41671 placed second and third, respectively, for St. Charles, while Todd Griffiths 11261 and Steve Biddle 11853 each finished fourth. Under head coach Fred Bruder and JV coach Chuck Robinson, St. Charles swept past perennial UEC champion DeKalb by an impressive margin of 155Vz points to the Barbs' 129. 180

Again we are sorry for the inconvenience. The Saints' sophomores went through a disappointing season under head coach Chuck Rachow, although the team did win two tournaments. Dan Krasinski and Stan Bednarz led the way in the Saints' 47-28 victory over Immaculate Conception inthe title game of the Wheaton-Warrenville Thanksgiving tournament. The sophs also won their own eight-team Christmas tournament with a 61-58 victory over Larkin for the championship. But, the sophs completed the season with a 1-9 UEC record after playing well the first half of the season. 179

St. Charles sent five wrestlers to the DeKalb Sectional tournament, after taking second place at the district meet with 98 points to champion Addison Trail's 147V2. The Saints finished fourth at DeKalb with 3OV2 points, behind the 50V2 points by the champions from Addison Trail ' again. Dave Wells survived the sectional meet by taking first at 138 pounds, while Willing ended up second at 145. Although Willing didn't place at the state tournament held at Champagne-Urbana, Wells did finish fifth. St. Charles closed out the regular season with a first-ever 5-O dual meet mark in the UEC which was helped by the Saints breaking DeKalb's dual meet winning mark of 66. Q my A, l l Varsity wrestling.
