A 1 et tte r ' ' at g --1' '- mf- You had to be a basketball fan to appreciate what Saints' coach Ron Johnson and Co. accomplished during the 1977-78 season at St. Charles. The Saints finished second in the St. Charles Thanksgiving basketball tournament after losing to East Aurora 92-87 in the championship game. Next, St. Charles captured its second straight DeKalb Christmas tournament with a 58-43 victory over Sycamore in the title game. Rick Garrison, UEC scoring champion and a 6-3 senior forward, Phil Brinkman, a 6-2 senior guard, and Dennis Warford, a 6-2 senior forward, were selected to the Upstate Eight all-conference first-team. Senior guard Mike Liesman and junior center Greg Cudworth were named honorable mention. St. Charles won the Larkin Regional tournament by defeating Sycamore 67-46. But, the Saints were knocked out of a chance to go downstate and the Elgin Sectional tournament, as well, with a loss to Barrington 61-58. Overall, however, the Saints established the most wins in St. Charles' history by finishing 25-4 to cap a successful season that may never happen again. 177
