St. Charles' football team provided fans with last-second losses and thrilling victories during the course of its 4-5 overall 1977 season. St. Charles suffered two consecutive Upstate Eight Conference defeats at Elgin, losing to state-ranked Elgin 28-21 in the last two minutes, and Elgin Larkin 25-21 in the final 34 seconds. Closing out their tough year with a 14-12 victory over the DeKalb Barbs, the Saints ended up tied for third place in the UEC with DeKalb and West Aurora, all three of which possessed 2-3 records. Four Saints were named to the Upstate Eight all-conference team. A winning but rainy Homecoming St. Charles defeated Upstate Eight Conference foe East Aurora 16-O Homecoming night October 7 in a steady rain at Reid Field. Running back Todd Willing topped all runners with 98 yards on 23 carries to lead St. Charles' ground attack of 270 yards. Willing scored the first touchdown on a one-yard plunge that was followed by quarterback Randy Wright's four-yard touchdown run. Kicker Mark Grossklag made a 22-yard field goal to account for the Saints' final three points. Clockwise from right: Ray Foster, 1615, tires to help out as three Saints tackle an East Aurora runner.
