Cars: freedom Wanting clothes and beer money were just a few of the things that led students to find jobs. Having a job led many to making their first big financial investment- a new car. Although most cars weren't actually new, in the owner's mind, the beaters looked and ran as well as a new Corvette. Cars were a sign of prestige in many students' eyes. The sportier the car and the faster it would go, the better it was. Those who were really into automobiles, the type who idolized Richard Petty, were termed Gearheads. Local Chapter 4454 dominated St. Charles High in the racing field. Gearheads' Friday and Saturday nights were centered around finding whose oar was the fastest. But among the Camaros, GTO's, and other cars that many students termed as strictly race, were the Novas, Volkswagons, and family cars that other students drove to school -just for the convenience of having their own transportation.
