Peeflflg Venerable 1ndeed seems to be the record of the Par1sh of St Charles Borromeo 1n Destrehan whlch apparently owes 1tS modest beg1nn1ngs to a handful of settlers as early as 1723 only f1Ve years after the founda t1on of the church that was dest1ned to become St LOUIS Cathedral 1n New Orleans We f1nd lt strange that no paroch1al school ex1sted 1n th1s venerable par1sh unt1l 1929 when under the pastorate of the Reverend John Basty the S1sters of the Immaculate COHCept10n opened the present paroch1al school Undoubtedly durlng the lonv 1nterval of practlcally two centur1es Chr1st1an educat1on was prov1ded through the zeal of the Rev erend Pastors Wlth the co operatlon of the par1sh1oners for the congre gat1on of St Charles has all the earmarks of stab1l1ty 1n our holy fa1th and the Cathol1c way of l1fe It 1S therefore Wlth much Joy that we congratulate the congregat1on of St Charles Borromeo upon the 25th ann1versary of the foundat1on of the present school How prop1t1ous th1s effort 1n Cathol1c educatlon has been 1S ev1denced by the fact that today there are on record 452 pup1ls 1n the elementary grades and 88 students 1U the h1gh school d1v1s1on Very commendable also 1S the c1rcumstance that Wlthln th1s short per1 od of t1me the congregat1on under the leaderslup of the Pastors Rev erend John Basty and Reverend Malcolm Strassel and the zealous labors of the S1sters of the Immaculate Concept1on has found poss1ble also the estabhshrnent and development of a Cathol1c h1gh school These are ev1dences that God has man1festly blessed the comb1ned work of pr1ests rel1 1ous S1sters and the la1ty 1n prov1d1ng a thorough Chr1st1an educatlon for the chlldren of the par1sh a task wh1ch was certa1nly not accornphshed w1thout genu1ne Cathol1c fort1tude and a noble Splrlt of sacr1f1ce May we then offer prayers of fervent thanksg1v1ng for th1s mag n1f1cent ach1evement and express the hope that under God s bless1ng the school of St Charles w1ll cont1nue to thrlve and prosper and that lt w1ll always stand as a monument of Cathol1c fa1th and a guarantee of Cathol1c lntere st and zeal 1n the sp1r1tual moral and 1ntellectual wel fare of Ueneratlons of boys and v1rls 1n th1S area JOSEPH FRANCIS RUMMEL TArchb1shop of New Orleans 5 O . 1 , - . .
