The gospel revealed almost two thousand years ago perfectly fulfills the great needs of the human spirit that have been identified by the psychological science of the twentieth century. Though psychology is an infant science far behind most other sciences, it has posi- tively discovered the two basic needs of the human spirit: the need to love and to be loved, and the need to feel that we are worthwhile to ourselves and to others. The sec- ond of these needs can be re-defined as the need for sewloveg that is, self-esteem and self-confidence. So the core of each individual's psychology is also the core of our community and the heart of the great universal sphere of our faith: love. Desiderata Go plaeidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peaee there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and elearly: and listen to others, even the dull and igno- rant: they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexa- tions to the spirit. Il' you eompare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter: for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own eareer. however humble: it is a real possession in the ehanging fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs: for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is: many persons strive for high ideals: and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affeetion. Neither be eynieal about love: for inthe face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the uni- verse, no less than the trees and the stars: you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you. no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peaee with Cod, whatever you eonsider him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations. in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though Igive my body to be burned, and have not love, it profiteth me nothing. Love suffereth long, and is kind, love envieth not, love vaunteth not itself it is not puffed up. Doth not behave .itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth, 'Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Love never faileth: but whether there be tongue shall cease, whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. s, they For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done, away. When I was a child I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, Iput away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly, but then face to face: now I know in part, but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, love, these three, but the greatest of these is love. I Corinthians 13: I-I3 Qffjjiw iwfvwwwfiwdb PDMMO My W., i3F!k5WwMwfy L1 MM wiwbvywoyf ' WL DWQXKWX.
