This hymn-num- ber 508-is one of six or seven in the hymnal that specifically celebrate Gods belonging to young people, as contrasted to the many hymns for little children. Hymn 508, besides being a good tune, has appropriate language: Zeal in every brave endeavor, to right the wrongs that shame this mortal life. How well this fits the temperament of today's young women. Give us clear-eyed faith, says the song, speaking for you girls and for all youth-not addressed to us who wear bifocals, and who sometimes miss a tennis ball or a golf ball altogether. The hymn suggests why we of the faculty want to work at St. Catherines School. We think that young people have great worth, and that their worth is relevant to the Christian Church. Let's not think of a generation gap. Let's think only of generations. Let us all appreciate that people who are forty, fifty, or sixty are often capable of youthful freshness of spirit, enthusiasm, and creativity. And let us be grateful that people in their teens are capable of mature, considered judgments and a steady sense of values. So may we get the best from each other and give the best to each other-as the hymn says, in service glad and free, winning the world . . Yours very sincerely, RW. Trusdell 14 5 1 i pp: -L3 gg' U-JJ! Anne comes from Newcastle, England where she was a senior. She is living with the John Halsey family whose two daughters, Mary Shaw and Eugenia, are students in the upper and middle schools respectively Coming right at the beginning ofthe Christmas season, Anne was swept up into a tide of Christmas parties with a sea of new and unfamiliar faces. This was no drawback to Anne as by mid-January she knew most everyones name. Ever since her arrival here, Anne has been extremely active in various school organizations. She has been made an honorary member of the student government, and Anne is an especially important member of our newly formed American Field Service program. Anne is also very interested in athletics but unfortunately the hockey season, a favorite sport of hers, was over by the time Anne came to St. Catherine s The A.F.S. program has been under the leadership of the St. Catherine's league this year, The chief goal ofthe program is to raise enough money for our next years student Bake sales, doughnut days, and movies are some of the projects through which we try to raise the needed amount. There are representatives on these committees from all of the upper school classes, and through the combined efforts of these committee members interested parents and faculty, and our foreign exchange students we hope to promote a greater interest in the American Field Service program Bell '53-f A.-4' K 'fd -ef-f ,gLg 'x3 sift? For those of you who have not yet read Tolkien's Hobbit, we will tell you a piece of his story. Nlr. Bilbo Baggins was a very regular, everyday sort of hobbit-that is, until he joined a company of dwarves who were searching for gold. Bilbo left the panelled walls and carpeted floors of his hobbit- hole far behind. He had many exciting adventures: Once he was nearly destroyed by a band of goblinsg he was attacked and almost devoured by flies and spidersg he found himself at the mercy of a slimy creature called Gollum. When he was travelling through the dark forestin the pouring rain, when he had not eaten in days, Bilbo remembered his hobbit-hole. He thought of his most comfortable chair in his favorite sitting roomg he thought of his warm fireg he thought of his kettle singing on the stove. We, the Class of 1969, will remember St. Catherines as Bilbo remembered his hobbit hole: warm. comfortable, homey . We will seek adventureg we will search for gold-yet our thoughts will always wander back to St. Catherine's. We leave our hobbit-hole in custody of the Class of 1970-but we shall return. 146 1 I 1 ,U KJ P !
