HOYT BEATRICE MARABLE ELLEN RUSSELL ' J ' 'fl Editorial URING THIS YEAR, which marks the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of our school, we have taken pleasure in reviewing our history and recalling memories of Miss Jennie. The school has grown in numbers, but we hope that it retains the spirit which Miss Jennie instilled into every one of her girls-the spirit of loyalty, honor, and devotion to ideals. It is with a certain sadness that we leave St. Catherine's, for these years have meant much to us and we have enjoyed them. From the Lower School through the twelfth class we have felt, Miss Jennie's spirit always. The same thing that makes us reluctant to leave, however, makes us at the same time eager to go out and test our- selves. We want to test this knowledge which we have gained from our books, from working together in our organizations, and from living together in .the boarding department. Our teachers and housemothers have given us much, and we have tried to make the most of the splendid opportunities offered us. Yet the world we face today is very different from that faced by the girl of fifty years ago. The business and professional fields into which women may enter have widened immeasurably. However, besides these many opportunities which we are offered' today, we are confronted with the spectacle of war-a war more horrible than any other. Here at St. Catherineis we have done as much as we were able to help the refugees and the people with whose cause we sympathize. When we leave here this June we shall be called upon to do a great deal more. We must becomephelpful citi- zcns and .take an active interest in the affairs of our country. Let us prove ourselves worthy of St. Catherine's and the standards which -Miss Jennie set for her school. In , . i aw. x , 'ing f M VII M Se M1654 affff 1 4, W MM . Virginia Wellford leaves her complexion to Woodbury. Billie Whaley leaves her jokes for Ned Sparks to laugh over. Edith Wood takes her seal skin coat. It's too good to leave! The Virgil class leaves Miss Goucher with regret. The Senior Claus Proplaegf HIS is THE YEAR 1951, and our official Washington correspondent, Lee Hodder, has taken time off from her press conferences to come to the tenth reunion of the class of '41 at the Jefferson Hotel. She takes her place at the speaker's table beside Ruth Blackman who is on one of her semi-annual leaves from Happy Dale Sanitarium on the Susquehanna. The first speaker of the evening, Natalie Smith, who has just published Ante-Bellum Richmond, sits on Miss Hodder's right. Everyone turns their attention to the floor show which is just beginning. The spot light picks up Olive Pinney as she swings into her memorable hula with the accompaniment of Jeanne Barksdale and Her Brown Babes featuring Betty Featherston at the piano and Audrey Straus, the Trucking Trumpeter. This is followed by the Met's current rage, Annuya Balairia, who gives a charming rendi- tion of Virginia Davis's latest composition, The Beautiful Muddy James. Jane Coleman leaves the Mosque and the Ballet Russe long enough to dance L'Apres- Midi d'un Faun. The lights come on once more and we fall to f the entree, my dears.j A batch of telegrams has just come in from several of the absent members of our happy throng. The melodious tones of Mary Cox ring out the tidings. She singles out a radiogram from Willis Adams who with her missionary husband has already converted twenty-seven Eskimos and a half-breed. The next is a night letter from Mary Lockwood which informs us that she is maintaining her record which she won when she snagged the '41 Baby Cup. Oh, here comes something of interest! Sylvia Gregory has just won the hundred yard dash in Lima, Peru. Sally Eddy writes that she is recuperating from powder base poisoning. Tugboat Lizzie fKratzJ cables that her unique night club in New York harbor is now featuring Mary Douthat Smith and Louise Chewning in Midshipmen Magnets. The conversation turns to those present. Rachel Jones, who directs Tropic Travel Tours for Better Banana Boats fsteamship companyj, embraces modest Lloyd Horsey, distinguished writer of the Dover Daily Dribble column, Who's Going Steady. Frances Boushall tucks her husband's napkin under his chin and exclaims proudly over his latest film success, Henpecked Henry. Carolyn Nettleton, who has made a remarkable job of cleaning up corrupt Covington, takes time off to hear Anna Johnston explain her new slum clearing project. At this moment Caroline Duvall, who owns half partnership in a cross country caravan, comes in. Billie Whaley's mink coat and diamonds testify to the fact that she's just hauled in another winning sweepstakes ticket. Ellen Morris sends her regrets. Ann Hitner, her manager, explains that she is in Hollywood impersonating Brunnehilde in the forthcoming extravaganza Whacky Wagner. Carter Catlett, the rector's wife, discusses the Ladies Auxiliary of Gloucester Parish with Polly Pollard. Jean Firth, National Commissioner of 'Road Vehicles, tells Bettie Burrus of the evils of one-armed driving. Nina Tilden, who has donated one thousand bearskin bath mats to St. Catherine's, describes i '1 vividly her big game hunting to Eugenia Robb, chairman of the Board for Balti- more's Hopeless Hypochondriacs. Kathleen Parrish, the second speaker of the evening, elaborates on the honor system at Sing-Sing. In closing she proposes a toast to Suzanne Carter for remarkable success in the metamorphosis of Frances Barton as shown in this month's edition of V ivacious Vanities, published by Louisa Hagner, a conglomeration of Shakespearean criticism and snappy photos. Harriott Phelps has just been communing with nature in the Bayous of Louisiana after publishing her pamphlet Bayou Beauty Mud. The American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Young Children awards a medal to Carolyn Coker for her sincere cooperation in that field. This done, Anne Freeman announces her engagement to Superman who has promised her double deluxe rocket motors for her Ford V-8. Harriet Gould has just proved that the Rockefeller millions can be budgeted. She is now working on how to budget billions. The trumpet signals silence as Cornelia Hume sweeps in majestically with a military escort on leave from her duties as housemother at V. M. I. Two good examples of If at first you don't succeed are Mildred and Gertie Johnson who have just received honorary diplomas from Vassar College. Nurse Arnold, the modern Nightingale, has returned from exterminating Hemiptera in the trenches of Uruguay. Carol Franklin has just finished her course in chicken husbandry and the assets of the farm at the University of Maryland in time to attend. Alnita Holtzclaw has just altered The Golden Mean. Dabney Rawlings has made herself famous as an osteopath by taking the kinks out of hula dancers. Marion Pearson, in her little sloop, The Corky Q, is now running lemonade up and down the coast. Edith Wood is conducting camping trips up the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Virginia Wellford now has an old, old castle in Scotland overlooking the Firth of Forth and is fast establishing a clan. On the other bank Bonnie Babs Macfarlane has been stringing Scotchmen on her line for souvenirs. Tom Thumb has now retired from the circus to marry Teenie Weenie Taylor who has been co-staring in Mutt and jeg with Virginia Brown. Olivia Hart has come all the way from Bluefield where she teaches diction. Peggy Booth is molting in the level pastures of Timbuctoo while her old side kick, Rosemary Harwell, sponsored by Neudoerfer's Nifty Nourishment, charms cobras. Louisa Johnson tells us that she has just returned from Venice where she has been water-skiing behind a gondola propelled by the brawny arms of Chiquita Mitchell who sings O Sole Mio. Frances Jerman takes time out from her robot factory to appear with Margaret Shirey on the College Varieties program put on by Blanton, Bowman, Inc. This about concludes the interesting account of the activities of the class of ,4l. We disband as our Master of Ceremonies, Lee Hodder, suggests a bicarbonate to all and to all a good night. P. S. The desk clerk writes that a Miss Peggy Clark was inquiring about a banquet that was to take place sometime at the Hotel Murphy. - l'dl'ZJ'Z'ZCJ' V A J. Wfmnwvt 'g:f5egg.,,. YE, . , A g',Ql.Lig.5,U',-54. I A St. Cvztlzerineh' League OURTEEN YEARS Aco our St. Catherine,s League was born of a necessity and an ideal. In the year 1926-27, as the school grew larger and its interests more varied, a need was felt to bind the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools more closely together. It was at this time that there arose a' realization of the need of an organization that would be a center for our activities, and from a discussion of these problems the idea of a League arose. Its membership included every loyal, thinking member of the school. Its aims were to strengthen our friendships within the school and to widen our horizon to include interests outside of the school.', The League dues were created to prevent the waste of time and money on trivial things, and the League, in the fairest and wisest way, contributes a part of our money to charities and interests out- side of the school, a part for the traditional entertainments within the school, and a part for class activities, to be decided upon each year by the class itself. Now, on its fourteenth anniversary, the League has ceased to be an experiment and is an integral part of our school life, and through it we have gained in loyalty and understanding of the school as a whole. The various organizations of the school play an important and necessary part in our school life. Our Student Government has tried this year, as in former years, to instill in every member of our community a sense of the true proportion of all things -high ideals, loyalty, and honorf' Greater interest has been shown this year in the friendly rivalry between the Golds and Whites, and attendance at games and at gym has greatly improved. Through the Quair, Arcadian, Inklings and Odds 'n Ends, each girl shares with the school as a whole her own pleasures and gains and those of the groups of which she is a member. The Day School has tried to make each girl feel her responsibility to work for unity throughout the school. This unity is divided into three heads: unity of purpose, shown in our work to make St. Catherine's a better school, unity of ideals, shown in our loyalty to ourselves, our friends, and the school, and unity of conduct, shown in our attitudes towards teachers and fellow students, on the street car, and at games. The Boarding School has made gradual but steady progress toward its aims of teaching girls to live together with tolerance and under- standing. As usual, a great part of our League dues has gone to various worthy organiza- tions throughout the world. However, we took this year as our special project the raising of funds for the Red Cross and for the refugees from war torn lands, in addi- tion to the contribution of funds for Camp Merriewood-Harrison. In response to a plea for mobile canteens for England and through the help of other private schools in Virginia, we raised fifteen hundred dollars, the cost of a mobile canteen. St. Cather- ine's League raised five hundred and fifty dollars of this amount by sponsoring a lecture on Famous English Gardens. Much of our relief work is being carried on through various group projects. This is only a resume of the most important League activities. Each organiza- tion, in its special way, tries to improve or give pleasure to the school, and all work together for greater unity and steadfastness of purpose under St. Catherine's League. We leave to the League members of next year our trust and belief that they will carry these projects further and that, year by year, they will' increase the feeling of spirit and fellowship in the school. Although membership is voluntary, approvement of housemothers, teachers, and members of the group is required. If a St. Catherine's girl, a member of the senior or junior class, is sincerely in sympathy with the ideals for which the group stands and is willing to work for their reali- zation and to stand before the student body as a leader in carrying out these ideals, she is eligible to membership. These ideals are expressed in the following statements to which the members subscribe: l. School' honor in its highest sense. 2. The true interpretation of the spirit of Student Government Laws. 3. Complete independence in work. The Blue Ring Group does not aim to take the place of Student Government, but it does aim to show what girls can do when they interpret Student Government laws correctly and sincerely. However, as this school year ends, I think we can truthfully say it again with a great deal of appreciation to Mrs. Faulkner and Mr. Watson who, with their untiring patience, have taught us correct form as well as making our daily rides something to be looked forward to. Every afternoon a group of girls goes to the Deep Run Hunt Club where, after choosing their mounts, they usually divide into two groups, some staying to work on their form in the ring, the others taking long rides over the bridle paths of the sur- rounding country. Once a month, when the weather permits, we have a Gymkhana at school. Our first Gymkhana this year, judged by Mr. Richard Kelly, was a victory for the Wfhites, which gave them several points towards winning the cup. In the spring, when the weather grows warmer, we have picnic suppers by a stream near the club. These are especially looked forward to by all. Some of the more advanced riders learn to jump and enter the jumping class in our annual spring horseshow in May. The riding here at school, as well as being a great deal of fun, has increased our interest and knowledge of horses and horsemanship. -SALLY EDDY, Clary XII 9 0, efagf- ,fix - -f, .tg St. Catlae1'ine'.r Chapel I cross the threshold and I feel An all-pervading sense of pcaccg I cross the threshold and I find Life's turbulences cease. They were all so carefree and silly. Willus was the only man that had any place in Cynthia's heart. He was the steady, hard- working type and never bothered anyone. He just spoke to Cynthia every time he saw her and that was as far as it went. However, she longed to be his wife and to be with him always. One night, the goddess Diana came to earth and Willus fell madly in love with her and so they were married. After a while, the good little Cynthia heard about this awful incident and it almost broke her heart. She cried all day and all night and never ate a thing. All of her suitors implored her to marry one of them, but no, she wouldn't have a husband if she couldn't have Willus. Finally she begged Jupiter to help her. Jupiter consented and turned Cynthia into the Weeping Willow tree. We still see her weeping for her lover. -NANCY POINDEXTER, Clays IX The Biitferfly HE gods and goddesses were excited. They knew that the absence of Jupiter from Mount Olympus and Juno's terrible frowns could mean only one thing, that the king of the gods had fallen in love again. It was whispered that Iris, whom Juno had sent to find out about the love affair, had come back and reported that the maiden was the most beautiful on earth. The gods and goddesses kept care- fully out of juno's way and waited. They did not have long to wait. Infuriated by her attendant's message, Juno went down to earth and stood in all her majesty before her rival, who was so lovely and graceful that the queen of the gods was more furious than ever. The maiden was terrified, but when Juno asked her if it was true that she and Jupiter were in love, she bravely answered yes. Jupiter will love you no longer, said Juno. As she spoke, the maid felt herself getting smaller and smaller until soon she was only a green worm crawling on the ground. People no longer admired her. They looked at her with disgust. jupiter no longer loved her. He didn't even notice her. Hating the ugly creature that she had become, the poor girl prayed to Venus for help. Finally Venus took pity on her and shut her up in a smooth, hard case. Be patient, said the goddess, and she departed. The maiden, shut up in her case, waited. Then one day a wonderful thing happened. Her case split open, and coming out, she saw that she was no longer ugly. She also found to her amazement that she could fly. Once again people exclaimed over her loveliness, and high up on his throne on Mount Olympus, the king of the gods looked down and smiled at the beautiful butterfly. -NANCY CONE, Class IX f eff , l P ' It Huppeued Oue Night 55 UICK, the light! Mary lunged at the bulb as she spoke, and shuffled it under her bathrobe. A dull red glow betrayed it even then-a color as guilty as our consciences and as unmistakable as the stifling thunder of our hearts. No sound broke the silence, yet we dared not move. Somewhere outside our door was the house-mother, we had heard the screech of the squeaky floor even inside the closet. After that, silence. She was there. In utter terror we stared at the evidence strewn about us. We were caught, we knew it. Pillows, comforters, Mary's clock, my hot water bottle, ink, and countless scratchy papers all agreed g it was home- work by stealth. Deep and sinister in the maroon blackness the clock told a bloody 11:30. Its ticks were throbs of pain eons apart as we waited for doom to Hing the door wide. I could feel the house-mother outside. I sensed her intentness. I knew she felt our fright. Now she was sure, she was opening the door. Opening it gently, quietly. The silence was so thick I knew it was not accidental 5 she knew-she was in the room. One look at our beds and she knew. In the closet! Sheer terror jerked me up. What would she do? Go ahead and open the door-go ahead, open it! Her hand was on the knob-one more second, just one more, one more-- oh, help, she's . . . Crack! I tumbled into Mary's arms as she wrenched me down. Be quiet! She's gone. -VIRGINIA DAVIS, Class XII Oetuvius Augustus Mouse, Esq. The air was cooler, and a fitful breeze, alighting here and there, an- nounced the coming to the low bushes and stunted pines that surrounded the rock on which I sat. They bowed their assent and the leaves clapped softly. From my high perch I saw the silent world below me awaiting its refreshment. The sun was still warm up above, seeming unaware of, or perhaps trying to ignore, that misty mass that was its rival. Far below in the valley a solitary buzzard floated lazily on a sea of green, searching for its prey. A dog barked. The sweet, faint tinkle of a cow- bell was part of the silence. The deep thick moss which covered the mountain top was dry and brittle. The summer sun had already done its work there. But life had not gone, for amongst the withered blades tiny white and yellow flowers reared their bell-like faces to the sky. Insect life went on busily under the carpet. A line of ants dragged a large dead beetle to a cover before the rain should wash it down the mountain. The rain had come much closer. It hung like a great curtain obscuring the view. Three rainbows led to three mystic pots of gold in the primeval forest. The pastel crescents vanished only to appear again, clearer and more brilliant than before. No artist's brush could ever mix such color. It came quite swiftly now. I felt the moisture in the air. And suddenly, as I looked down, the valley was hidden. A great grey blanket covered the spot where it had been, and I felt as though I were floating through space on the famous Flying Carpet. Over its edges, I could see the horizon again. The quietness was oppressive. The sound of falling rain could not penetrate to my seat. The miracles of sun and rain were above and below me. The shower passed on as quickly as it had come, but in its wake lay a new world. From where I sat I saw that each blade of grass, each leaf, held a sparkling diamond. The great black bird was gone, and all was peace. -LAIRD CHISOLM, Class XI ! l nh, hy...-, N fu-, Y' WSW 1' .17 Curly Locks' Curly Locks, Curly Locks, wilt thou be mine? Thou shalt not feed the chickens, nor yet feed the swine, But sit on a cushion and sew a fine seam And feast upon strawberries, sugar, and cream! F COURSE Curly Locks said, Yes, He was a handsome prince and she liked strawberries. Curly Locks wasn't sure what a swine was but any way she wouldn't have to bother about its diet. When they were married it was even more fun than she had imagined. After the Prince had ridden away in the morning to look over his estate, Curly Locks would sit on the yellow satin cushion. Her curls would be smoothly brushed and tied up with a cherry colored ribbon and she would ring for the strawberries. They were juicy and red with fluffy white sugar and thick cream. In between bites she sewed on her fine seam. It wasn't really very line, but she supposed it would be better with a little practice. One day to the horror of Curly Locks she found that her thoughts had been wandering from strawberries to spinach and Idaho potatoes. She hastily sewed an- other fine seam and ate five or six strawberries. Then she began having the silliest dreams at night. She, Curly Locks, was a plump red strawberry of tempting juici- ness and someone had put on a dab of sugar and was swallowing her. She woke up swimming in tears, and the handsome Prince actually thought the dream was funny! Curly Locks used to hope that just once the maid would forget the sugar or perhaps the cream on the strawberries. She felt sure that a little variety might be quite pleasant if applied properly. ff? .--f KY' J s 'K 'EX 01 1 gif .nr- 1 nl Q 1 fyffvfw- uf .av fvvfmfw wvfffm i .fwfr fe Then one nice spring day Curly Locks looked out of the window and saw some things which she later learned were swine. They had another name- pigs, and they were very cute. They had curly tails and round faces. Curly Locks threw the satin cushion out of the window to attract their attention. They snuffed around it in the nicest way. Curly Locks went down and spent the day having a new pen built for them. When she came back she was very muddy and had lots more freckles on her turned up nose. She must have still looked a little pretty, however, for while shc was throwing her satin cushion and cherry hair ribbons into a suitcase, the Prince said, Curly Locks, Curly Locks, don't leave me, dear, Thou shalt not eat a strawberry, never, you hear? Nor sit on a cushion with seams that are fine, But help me with farming, and feed all the swine! Of course Curly Locks said, Yes He was a handsome prince and she loved swine. -LOUISA HAGNEP., Class XII Ode to 41 Turtle Round of eye, Large of head, Evidently bottle-fed.
