A FATHER'S PRAYER: GBUILD ME A SON' Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid, one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory. 5'Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds, a son who will know Thee- and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge. 'lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm here let him learn compassion for those who fail. Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high, a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men, one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past. And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom. and the meekness of true strength. Then I, his father, will dare to whisper, 'I have not lived in vain. ' By Gen. Douglas MacArthur 44444 'ff' 4 ,'h,. K5 DEDICA TION MR. RESTA BANDMAS T ER The 1970 Yearbook is dedicated to Mr. Robert Resta, Band Director of the School Band since 1941. Chief Warrant Officer Resta retired from the Army in 1955 after serving at various Army Posts including the U. S. Army Music School for over a period of twenty-five years. A graduate of the JULLIARD School of Music in 1913, Mr. Resta entered the army at the age of seventeen. During his career he has worked with many famous ar- tists including Luratore, Lina Caveleria, Frances Alda, Percy Grainger and Charles Wakefield Cadman. He was Co-con- ductor with Walter Damrosch in New York. Upon completion of his various foreign service assign- ments he was assigned at Ft. MacArthur where he served with Lt. Charles A. Schmitt who was Recruit Instructor. While there, in his spare time, Mr. Resta founded the San Pedro Symphony and later the famous Long Beach Sym- phony Orchestra which he conducted. Mr. Resta joined the Faculty at Saint Catherine's in 1941 and has been the in- spiration of our bands-teaching young cadets who did not know one instrument from another upon entry to the Band Section. We of Saint Catherine's Staff, Faculty and Cadet Corps wish him and his wife, Margaret, the best of years, and ex- tend our sincere thanks for his dedication to our Cadets. 2 o,'-JF9'A-4061 6-eoooocooooooooooow O O 0 O 0 Q O O + O O 0 9 O 6 O O O O 9 O 0 6 0 O O O Q 0 O O 0 O o Q 4 0 4 Q o o Q 0 O Q o go Q m L ......... ..... - -J 553:13:1k1I:1k13likS1k1IZEi.'iiFi1Zi ll PEL ODAY as well as yesterday and throughout the ages, man is engaged in a quest and a questioning which involves both his destiny and his mission. Like Diogenes of old with his lamp searching for the honest man, the pursuit of truth and beauty, along with many other of life's verities, has always en- gaged man's mind and spirit. The ninety-foot mural, The Descent of Truth , which occupies the inside north wall of St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel on our campus, depicts more than a score of saints and scholars through whom Divine Truth has been revealed to mankind. The central figure of this scene is Christ, the Divine Teacher. The mosaic on the outside wall shows people of various professions who, during the pre-Christian era, kept alight - or even rekindled - the torch to aid those who were in search of truth. Together the murals carry the message - a search for truth - up to the present time. On the south wall facing the large stained glass window of Our Lady of Wisdom, is a large mural, The Descent of the Holy Spirit conveying, through its vividly colored figures and triptych-like scene, the idea of the continuous life-giving work of the Holy Spirit . . . not only in Mary and the Apostles, who are depicted, but in ourselves and our contemporaries. Vatican II has pointed out both our mission to be a witness to the life of the spirit and our purpose-the attainment of an eternal destiny. To this . . . all the other artistic media convey a message that is but a preface. They show the way and give us the courage, but the Pentacostal scene involves us in a life- long challenge. Like Mary and the Apostles, we, too, are to be witnesses to the truth and show the way in our times, by means of our talents and vocation. We are committed to carry this message of truth and love along life's path. Others seeing or meeting us should be lead to find and love the Way, the Truth and the Life - Christ - here and finally in the Eternal City - Heaven. 31ik3fk2Iki',Lfik2ff-Ei?-Jlliiiiliiffilk , I if' Wg g Z an dk? Since that day in 1889 its aim has been to respond to the distinctive religious, mental, physical and moral needs of the elementary school boy. The administration, staff and faculty are engaged in the challenging venture of helping each cadet grow toward Christian manhood. Together they strive to develop the boy's alert and inquiring mind by an integrated and well-balanced program which affords spiritual, academic, and military opportunities for character development. The schoolis curriculum provides sound training in the basic skills and is further designed to meet the demands generated by current advances in all fields so that the cadet can lay a groundwork for any vocation or career. Although Saint Catherine's had been primarily a boarding school, in 1925 it acquired the status of a private military academy, and in 1945 began accepting a limited number of day students. The purpose of the military program is to teach obedience, order, promptness and thoroughness in the performance of assigned tasks, and to develop self-reliance, initiative, and cooperation with others. A merit system helps to motivate the cadets, endeavors to strive for growth and proficiency in the various facets of his training. Citation cords, medals, ribbons, and promotions are all well-earned honors shared not only by the cadet himself but with his family and his company as well. The objective of the school is to graduate a cadet who possesses not only loyalty and honor, but also those noble traits which delineate a true Christian gentleman. The Dominican Sisters conduct the school and are assisted by a competent lay staff under the direction of Sister Patricia Marie, O.P., Administrator, and the supervision of Major Charles A. Schmitt, Commandant The students of Orange County's oldest Catholic school are proud of the Christian heritage and Domini- can tradition exemplified at Saint Catherine's. Their education has created in them an awareness not only of their own potentialities but also of the value and uniqueness of each person they encounter in their daily living. Each cadet, therefore, is encouraged to think, to lead, and always strive to do his best. At Saint Catherine's he becomes acquainted with his duties and responsibilities as a citizen of this world for he knows he has an eternal destiny and that this life is given to help him achieve it. ,- J- ,ery f f ,,,,,, ,,.., - Ef?2!'l22?Ei'l??1?42'-?2f'e ' The Dominican Sisters' school opened March ZS. We have all been enriched by his wisdom and personal example . Special thanks are also due to our parents who have co- operated in the various school programs and Parent Guild activities. Your interest is an encouragement to your son and a help to all of us . The complexity of modern living challenges each of us to re-evaluate our attitudes and ideals. In the midst of rapid societal change, we do well to keep in mind the one thing necessary--the Will of God. If we do this, it is easier to keep education and life goals in perspective. We ask God to bless and help each of you. Cordially yours in Christ, Sister Patricia Marie , O .P .
