Major and Mrs. Schmitt stand as honor guard salutes his 25th Iubilee as commandant The Major's Silver Iubilee Twenty-five years is a long time. For a quarter of a century, Major Schmitt has been commandant of St. Catherines Military School. On May 2, 1959, the Sis- ters arranged a silver jubilee celebration. By plan, Mrs. Schmitt, the Major's wife, shared honors, by coinci- dence it was her silver wedding anniversary. His Excellency Bishop Bell gave his blessing to the commandant - husband, father, and grandfather - whose first grandchild was baptised in the St. Cathf erine's chapel October 19, 1957. The decade of the fifties was filled with the achieve- ments of military men. The first commander of United States forces, General Douglas MacArthur, led men from many nations to the 38th parallel in the Korean War that could not be won. Dwight Eisenhower, first general in 70 years to occupy the White House, was elected President of the United States in 1953. In Europe, the 5th Republic of France was formed under General Charles DeC-aulle. But the decade closed with the death of the wise and gentle general, Pontiff of the Catholic Church, Pius XII. Quietly and serenely, the peacemaker left the world of men to find that peace which the world can not give.
