t Ioseph's statue tipped .but did notyrfall. The Earth Quakes In the same week that President Roosevelt declared a 'ibank holiday, the wrath of nature shook the earth. In the late aftemoon of March 11, 1933, the wind rose, St. Cathc-:rine's tall palms lashed about, and its build- ings broke. Large areas of Southem California cracked under a giant earthquake. The nun's chapel and study were demolished, By an act of God, the Sisters were at dinner. The length of the Divine Office had pro- longed their schedule and, by Providence, had delayed by minutes their return to the doomed chapel. Legend records the words of the Pearl Harbor padre-hero: Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition. Reverend Father William A. Maguire, Captain U. S. Navy retired, 1890 -1953 I Am Far From Home December 7th, 1941, day of infamy. During Father's early morning field Mass, said for both the military and civilian personnel on the island of Oahu, Iapanese bombers, without warning, dove with deadly cargo on Pearl Harbor. American boys from Anaheim, California, to Albany, New York, lay dead. The allied world was shocked. The United States government declared war. Father William Maguire was appointed Chief Chap- lain of the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. He followed his boys through battle, many of whom he knew' would never laugh or love again or taste the summertime. Later, he wrote of these days in two books: Rig for Church and The Captain Wears a Cross. The Lights Go On Again A year after the dedication of the administration build- ing at St. Catherine's Military School, the cadets wel- comed their new Navy Chaplain, Father Maguire. He came with many stories of battle experience and with a warm love for America's fighting men - and their sons, the little men of St. Catherine's. There amid quiet joy he remained until his death, September 13, 1953. As God planned it, he died at an altar in London, saying Mass. The school moumed and Sister Verona, Prioress, dedicated the proposed new chapel to the memory of this much-loved and much-admired Navy Chaplain, Father Wm. Maguire. W 4
