On February 8, 1925, Mother Pia, foundress of St. Catherine's School, died, just four years after the passing of Father Stoeters, who, 36 years before, had invited her to Anaheim. Physical change was a necessity at St. Catherine's. While the heart of the school remained the same, the light was carried in ever larger lanterns. A decade after the school opened, a second wing was added, seven years later the first Chapel. In 1924, the old wooden wing was demolished and work was commenced on a new one. Subsequently a new dormitory, a swimming pool, and a Iunior High School were built. The dining room was refurnished, the yard cemented, and work on a new infirmary begun in l926. Building buildings to the Dominicans is a pre- requisite to building boys. But on Black Thursday, An air picture of St.Catherine's band as it played in parade, Armistice Day, 1930, Anaheim. Cadet Paul Burroughs, nephew of Sister M. Eleonore marched that day.

t Ioseph's statue tipped .but did notyrfall. The Earth Quakes In the same week that President Roosevelt declared a 'ibank holiday, the wrath of nature shook the earth. In the late aftemoon of March 11, 1933, the wind rose, St. Cathc-:rine's tall palms lashed about, and its build- ings broke. Large areas of Southem California cracked under a giant earthquake. The nun's chapel and study were demolished, By an act of God, the Sisters were at dinner. The length of the Divine Office had pro- longed their schedule and, by Providence, had delayed by minutes their return to the doomed chapel. Quakes continued throughout the night and the chaplain heard confessions outside on the grounds. Nature showed its fury again when, on March 3, 1938, the Santa Ana river rose and flowed through the streets of Anaheim. The water Hooded the base- ment of the school and inundated the lower floor. The Sisters and the townspeople, with Christian faith, 'withstood the wrath of nature. The walls crumbled, but the stairs stood and the organ played a broken cord
