The plan: to teach the discipline, courtesy, and respect for authority that military training instills in the young 5. . 'H m ig 'af The First Battalion, 1926. Yesterday's history was measured by war. Its dates were the dates of battles. Its names were the names of generals. World VVar I, to make the world safe for democ- racy was fought with Yankee courage and valor. But the idealism of Wilson faded fast. His Fourteen Points, his League of Nations, his restoration and his Euro- pean food programs were, like those of many leaders, soon rejected and forgotten. The years that followed were mixed years of dis- illusionment, prohibition, woman suffrage, labor strife, organized crime, and jazz. The watchwords were to be found in personal liberty and rugged individualism. St. Catherine's Military School pursued its objec- tives, instilling its principles, and keeping the same warm light burning in the window of the soul. In 1914, five boys graduated: Clifford Keller, Louie Beller, Iames Maglio, Ioseph Lore, and Wm. DeFerge. 5

Physical change was a necessity at St. Catherine's. While the heart of the school remained the same, the light was carried in ever larger lanterns. A decade after the school opened, a second wing was added, seven years later the first Chapel. In 1924, the old wooden wing was demolished and work was commenced on a new one. Subsequently a new dormitory, a swimming pool, and a Iunior High School were built. The dining room was refurnished, the yard cemented, and work on a new infirmary begun in l926. Building buildings to the Dominicans is a pre- requisite to building boys. But on Black Thursday, An air picture of St.Catherine's band as it played in parade, Armistice Day, 1930, Anaheim. Cadet Paul Burroughs, nephew of Sister M. Eleonore marched that day.
