President Harrison has pro- claimed the admission of North and South Dakota, Montana and Washington, to the union. The place is Anaheim, California. The night is dark. A blight discolors the leaves of the grapes, and the vineyards of this German settlement wither and die. . P .sa ,, Lead, Kindly Light Since the beginning of human life man has worshiped light. From the sun god to the moon shot we pray for light. All religions throughout history have thought of heaven as a place of light - radiant light. Christ said: I am the way and the light. For three quarters of a century the Dominican Sis- ters of Mission San lose held high the light of learning, guiding the feet, stretching the mind, and ennobling the soul of the youth of California. It all started back in 1887 when Father Stoeters, pas- tor of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Anaheim, asked Mother Pia, Prioress General of the Queen of the Holy Rosary Congregation, Come, teach my children. And the Dominican Sisters came and remained, at times amid encircling gloom, for 75 years. This is their joy-filling anniversary. This is the record of those years, 'Two men whose birth and lives coincided in time with the years of the school, whose philosophies were diametrically apart were Karl Marx and Cardinal Newman, author of Lead, Kindly Light. step enough for me. ulgv -:iz it ---: gi -.'--:rv .r.': -r.r... :i.::2.':2 2 ',.f Isa.-. The plan: to teach the discipline, courtesy, and respect for authority that military training instills in the young 5. . 'H m ig 'af The First Battalion, 1926. Yesterday's history was measured by war. Its dates were the dates of battles. Its names were the names of generals. World VVar I, to make the world safe for democ- racy was fought with Yankee courage and valor. But the idealism of Wilson faded fast. His Fourteen Points, his League of Nations, his restoration and his Euro- pean food programs were, like those of many leaders, soon rejected and forgotten. The years that followed were mixed years of dis- illusionment, prohibition, woman suffrage, labor strife, organized crime, and jazz. The watchwords were to be found in personal liberty and rugged individualism. St. Catherine's Military School pursued its objec- tives, instilling its principles, and keeping the same warm light burning in the window of the soul. In 1914, five boys graduated: Clifford Keller, Louie Beller, Iames Maglio, Ioseph Lore, and Wm. DeFerge. 5
