A jubilee is quite properly a time for reminiscing. As we look back with you over 75 years, we rejoice in the loving Providence VVhich guided St. Catherine through changing patterns of service to youth to its present splendid development. Originally an academy for girls, then an orphanage, now a military school for boys, St. Catherine witnesses to the wisdom of past administrations who, yielding to the designs of Providence, recognized in the pressures of the time, made decisions which resulted in a school we acclaim today, May 2, 1964. With you, we pay grateful tribute to the Sisters, priests, military personnel, and lay staff whose dedi- cated collaboration over the years has won for St. Catherine its chief glory, an enviable record of dis- tinguished service to youth. Impressive, indeed, is its campus with Saint Thomas Aquinas Chapel as its center and core, but no beauty of stone, glass, or metal can equal the artistry involved in the making of a person. To this high art-the molding of Christian men-Saint Catherine Military School stands com- mitted. President Harrison has pro- claimed the admission of North and South Dakota, Montana and Washington, to the union. The place is Anaheim, California. The night is dark. A blight discolors the leaves of the grapes, and the vineyards of this German settlement wither and die. . P .sa ,, Lead, Kindly Light Since the beginning of human life man has worshiped light. From the sun god to the moon shot we pray for light. All religions throughout history have thought of heaven as a place of light - radiant light. Christ said: I am the way and the light. For three quarters of a century the Dominican Sis- ters of Mission San lose held high the light of learning, guiding the feet, stretching the mind, and ennobling the soul of the youth of California. It all started back in 1887 when Father Stoeters, pas- tor of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Anaheim, asked Mother Pia, Prioress General of the Queen of the Holy Rosary Congregation, Come, teach my children. And the Dominican Sisters came and remained, at times amid encircling gloom, for 75 years. This is their joy-filling anniversary. Yesterday's history was measured by war. Its dates were the dates of battles. Its names were the names of generals. World VVar I, to make the world safe for democ- racy was fought with Yankee courage and valor. But the idealism of Wilson faded fast. His Fourteen Points, his League of Nations, his restoration and his Euro- pean food programs were, like those of many leaders, soon rejected and forgotten. The years that followed were mixed years of dis- illusionment, prohibition, woman suffrage, labor strife, organized crime, and jazz. The watchwords were to be found in personal liberty and rugged individualism. St. Catherine's Military School pursued its objec- tives, instilling its principles, and keeping the same warm light burning in the window of the soul. In 1914, five boys graduated: Clifford Keller, Louie Beller, Iames Maglio, Ioseph Lore, and Wm. Physical change was a necessity at St. Catherine's. While the heart of the school remained the same, the light was carried in ever larger lanterns. A decade after the school opened, a second wing was added, seven years later the first Chapel. In 1924, the old wooden wing was demolished and work was commenced on a new one. Subsequently a new dormitory, a swimming pool, and a Iunior High School were built. The dining room was refurnished, the yard cemented, and work on a new infirmary begun in l926. Cadet Paul Burroughs, nephew of Sister M. Eleonore marched that day. during the Presidency of Herbert Hoover, the building program stopped. The stock market crashed and a man- made disaster finished the decade. Temporal stories start and end. The Earth Quakes In the same week that President Roosevelt declared a 'ibank holiday, the wrath of nature shook the earth. In the late aftemoon of March 11, 1933, the wind rose, St. Cathc-:rine's tall palms lashed about, and its build- ings broke. Large areas of Southem California cracked under a giant earthquake. The nun's chapel and study were demolished, By an act of God, the Sisters were at dinner. The length of the Divine Office had pro- longed their schedule and, by Providence, had delayed by minutes their return to the doomed chapel. Quakes continued throughout the night and the chaplain heard confessions outside on the grounds. Nature showed its fury again when, on March 3, 1938, the Santa Ana river rose and flowed through the streets of Anaheim. The water Hooded the base- ment of the school and inundated the lower floor. The Sisters and the townspeople, with Christian faith, 'withstood the wrath of nature. Later, he wrote of these days in two books: Rig for Church and The Captain Wears a Cross. The Lights Go On Again A year after the dedication of the administration build- ing at St. Catherine's Military School, the cadets wel- comed their new Navy Chaplain, Father Maguire. He came with many stories of battle experience and with a warm love for America's fighting men - and their sons, the little men of St. Catherine's. There amid quiet joy he remained until his death, September 13, 1953. As God planned it, he died at an altar in London, saying Mass. For a quarter of a century, Major Schmitt has been commandant of St. Catherines Military School. On May 2, 1959, the Sis- ters arranged a silver jubilee celebration. By plan, Mrs. Schmitt, the Major's wife, shared honors, by coinci- dence it was her silver wedding anniversary. His Excellency Bishop Bell gave his blessing to the commandant - husband, father, and grandfather - whose first grandchild was baptised in the St. Cathf erine's chapel October 19, 1957. The decade of the fifties was filled with the achieve- ments of military men. The first commander of United States forces, General Douglas MacArthur, led men from many nations to the 38th parallel in the Korean War that could not be won. Dwight Eisenhower, first general in 70 years to occupy the White House, was elected President of the United States in 1953. In Europe, the 5th Republic of France was formed under General Charles DeC-aulle. But the decade closed with the death of the wise and gentle general, Pontiff of the Catholic Church, Pius XII. Quietly and serenely, the peacemaker left the world of men to find that peace which the world can not give. 'I' he St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel E E X The school's new chapel was the dream of a theologian, Father Valerian Iasinski, the pencil plan of a priest- architect, Reverend Ioseph Myrda, and, the single- minded energy of Sister Verona, Prioress. In simple, clean, contemporary design the chapel artfully combines the talents and crafts of many men. It integrates the theology of St. Thomas with the Catholic doctrines of worship through symbols of beauty and truth. Words are poor vehicles to convey the description of the progression of Cod's revelation to man as graphically displayed in windows, walls, mosaic, wood and terra cotta symbols in this magnificant chapel. To really appreciate this unique house of worship one must quietly tour the chapel with a learned Dominican. To feel its full glory one must hear Mass early on a sun-filled morning as Cod's light, stream- ing through the tall palms and everlasting pines, splashes down on the center altar on which Christ Himself renews the Sacrifice of our Redemption. A picture is worth a thousand words, but behind these chapel pictures are millions of words: all the wisdom of recorded time frozen in a single fiat , the moment of being ,... the I am the Great I am that each one hears in conscience as he kneels in the silence of this Master's-piece. The Sisters of St. Catherine's are planning a single booklet to tell the story of the chapel. Until its pub- lication these few paragraphs must inadequately suffice. A religious landmark of Southern California, the new chapel, dedicated in 1958 stands at the corner of Harbor Blvd. and Cypress St., Anaheim. Cadets leave Mass from Chapel's rear entrance. Special mention should be made of Mr. Robert Kretschmar, Guild president, for his wise direction and constant encouragement, and to Mr. William Hoerner, Guild Vice-president and fund-raising chairman, for his efficient organization and energetic persistence in bringing this Iubilee Yearbook to completion. Recog- nition should also be given to Mr. Ernest Schworck, photographer and to the other members of the editorial and production staff. The Sisters have always been and are now deeply aware and genuinely appreciative of the numerous ef- forts of their many lay friends who through the years have given their time, money, and varied talents to the success and continued growth of this Dominican School. In a larger sense we are all benefactors of those who preceded us in all walks of life and in all ages of man. They left for each of us a rich heritage both of wealth and wisdom. VVe build on the blessed foundations they have laid. For shouldering with compassion the many tasks of the school, whether through labor, capital, or prayer, the Sisters of St. Catherine's are forever grateful for your generous gifts. Chapel Christmas Cards To disseminate the art and spirit of the St. Thomas Chapel, the school chooses one theme each year for its Christmas card. In 1962 the Burst of Creation window was used as the motif and in 1963, the statue of St. Thomas. These uniquely beautiful religious cards are created through the combined talents of Sister Amabilis, Don May and the fine craftsmanship of dedicated engravers and printers. The message of one, Oh Happy Fault that Merited so Great a Redeemer is praphrased from THE PAIN OF CHRIST by Gerald Vann, O. P. The Adam and Eve portion of the Burst of Creation window is en- larged to show that without this blessed fault in the Garden of Paradise, God need not have sent Christ to earth to save men and, therefore, there would have been no Christmas. The message of the other is paraphrased from the SUMMA THEOLOGICA, God's Christmas Gift to Men . . . A Mediator . . . . It portrays graphically by word and linear perspective the uniting of Man to God through Christ. These truly inspirational cards live from year to year recalling to rnan the real meaning of Christ's Birth. They are available to parents and friends at the school office. The exigencies of life take each of us to different places and to varied tasks, all part of the auto- mation of this space age. But the Faculty of the School through letters and public notices have received and recorded the names of the alumni listed below, and in addition, their present addresses. They are available to you upon request. The Administration continues to invite former stu- dents to send a record of their present whereabouts so that all cadet battalions may be kept intact-at least on paper. Knowledge of you, former cadets, and your good lives and works is one of the few earthly joys of your Dominican Sisters. Their prayers and good wishes will always be with you wherever you are. Q' Hs. Excerpts from a Letter of a Former Cadet Through thirty event-filled years, from Parris Island to Pearl Harbor, to Guadalcanal, to Okinawa, to Ameri- can Samoa, to Korea-Captain Young carried memories of St. Catherines - a school he called home His war record is written in the front lines of the American Marines. He spent thirty-one months in the Pacific battleground and from the fox holes wrote daily letters to his wife in California. One letter, dated October 6, 1958 fthe year of the photograph, abovej was addressed to Sister Verona, Prioress of St. Catherines, his first home. What he says in this letter so beautifully expresses the fulfillment of the highest dreams of the Dominican Sisters for their cadets, that they have asked his permission to quote it in part- believing that his thoughts might help to encourage other Sisters and other cadets of the future. 0 . Mr. William Young with his wife live in Santa Ana where he is a successful business man. After twenty-five years in the Marine Corps he returned to California and graduated with honors and an A.A. degree from Santa Ana College. He was awarded a B.A. degree from Orange County College in 1962. He is now president of the newly formed Alumni Association Dear Sister Prioress, . . . . I do not feel that the honors paid me are mine. Rather, I was a symbol of all the boys that ever attended St. Catherine's. I feel that somehow Cod has chosen me to be the recipient in their name. There are many, many boys to whom this honor would have been more deserving. . . . In all these years I had never really left St. Catherines. I have treasured all the little mementoes of my childhood there. The rosary I carry, the holy pic- tures in my prayerboolc admonishing me to pray hard and to make a good man of myself and signed by one or more of the good Sisters who gave them to me, a bronze medal I won in athletics, and even the orna- ments from the collar of my cadet uniform. . . . I was placed in your school at the age of two and a half and stayed until I was about fifteen years old. I knew no other home .... I have a very vivid recollection of my boyhood days there. My memory has been good because the education I received was good and proved valuable to me on many occasions during my life. . . . when I applied for enlistment in the Marines, . . . entrance to the Corps was very restricted. The Los Angeles district had a quota of only two men per month. There were many applicants. I was chosen im- mediately upon applying and ahead of many others because of my neatness, appearance, and military bear- ing. I was nineteen then and that was in 1932. Later as I received recruit training, I was made squad leader in my platoon because I displayed leadership ability and knew the drill movements. . . . A few years later I was assigned to a battleship and was promoted to corporal 'because I could read, write, and spell better, could understand orders better, because I had a better education than the other men with whom I was competing. And so it was all through my Marine Corps career. Even when I became a com- missioned officer, I still felt that my early training at St. Catherines was at the root of my achievement. . . . As a leader of men in wartime in close combat, I had strong moral courage, and even though my body sensed fear in moments of danger, my spirit was strong as it has always been because of the thorough religious training I had received as a child at St. Catherines. , . . . the memory I have of helping Sister Wendelina repair shoes, of helping to paint the porches, working in the laundry, in the garden, serving as an altar boy, running the silent movie projector, going to the beach in trucks, the summer I spent at Catalina Island camp, . . . stealing oranges, cutting my thumb on the bread slicer. Do children have so much fun and experience today as we did then? I often wonder. . . . VVhen I returned for a visit you made me feel that this lifelong dream I had was not a dream but a reality, something that is still living .... Sincerely, WILLIAM I. YOUNG SOUTHERN CALIFORIVIA WATER COMPANY LOS.ANGELES 44,CALIFORNLA PHILIP F. WALSH PRESIDENT Dear Sister Amabilis: It gives me a great sense of satisfaction to be a part of St. Catherine's 75th Jubilee Celebration. My eight year asso- ciation with the School has been most rewarding and enjoyable. I am deeply grateful for all of the efforts made by the School and faculty towards molding the spiritual, moral and educational fiber of m young son Philip. There is no question in my mind that he will be a better man because of this background and train ing in his formative years. I extend my heartiest congratulations to all of the good Dominican Sisters at St. Catherine's, not only those now resident but all who have contributed so importantly in the past. May you all find the Divine guidance to carry on your great work in the future. The world needs the essential elements you provide the youths under your guidance and care. Sincerely, f-w X . You have an inquiring mind. You're very fortunate. In- quiring minds have a lot more fun than if-it-was- good-enough-for-my-father-it's-good-enough-for- me-type minds. l Take a look at the young scien- tists at Delco-Remy's Research and Engineering Center in Anderson. They solve problems using everything from an electron microscope that can magnify the diameter of a human hair to a width of 150 feet to an instrument that can cut an inch of material into a million parts. They work side by side with other scientists who are developing things like electronic ignition systems for cars and control devices for missiles and rockets. l Beginning to think research can be fun? You're right. If you en- joyed your high school science courses, perhaps you should think about making a career in research. Don't get the idea that it'll be a snap, though. You'll need to tackle a lot of preparatory study and hard work in college. But if you've got what it takes, maybe we can get. together sometime and play around with a new discovery or two. Yes, it will always be our school. Many of us were but small infants when we were entrusted to your care. You accepted us as your own. You fed us, clothed us, comforted us taught us to read and write, and above all you taught us to know and to love God. As a small measure of our feeling of sincere appreciation we pledge our assistance in what- ever capacity we can muster. Pope Iohn XXIII, Holy Father of the Church, loved by all men, Christian and non-Christian, living symbol of God's grace, spoke the purpose of the twenty-first Ecumenical Council on October ll, 1962, in a simple sentence: To embrace the gospel more fully, to re- form the Church, to understand our separated brothers and for them to understand us. Old in years, yet young in spirit, Pope Iohn brought to the Papal Throne a magnificent mixture of mind and heart. Our Holy Father died in the spring of 1963 but his human and divine love lives on in every man he touched and he touched every man with his heart. ll' -X. -ma, .-,, F her -.: - 5. 4 in 1: la l l i ull ': Q ilu lohn Fitzgerald Kennedy, President of the United States, gzne to all nien ull that he had, and turned the title of history in the ifezlrffillecl UCOHfI'0l'll'Lll'l0lln signed nt the XVl1ite llonse, Oetoher 23, l962, in the iniclclle of n tzltefnl night.
