FACULTY COORDINATOR? SISTER M. REMIGIA, O.P., B.A. - College of St. Catherine, M.A. - Western Reserve Uni- versity. 29 Technical training was again offered at Vocational Technical and Adult School to the students of St. Catherine's. The curriculum offered was the follow- ing: for boys--auto mechanics, drafting, woodworking, machine shop, re-upholstery and shop mathematics, for girls-house- hold arts and foods. Business courses such as business correspondence, Typing I and II, business arithmetic, machine calcula- tion, and bookkeeping were open to both boys and girls. Among the one-hundred-twenty stu- dents attending Vocational School, Hfty- two were juniors and Sixty-eight were Sen- iors. Forty-live students participated in in- dustrial courses, twenty in home econom- ics and fifty-five in business courses. The shop courses enabled the boys to enter the working forces after graduat- ing. The home economics courses prepared the girls to become good homemakezs in the future. Students who took the business courses were given the opportunity to in- crease their knowledge of the business world. Wlith these courses and the background they received at St. Catherine's, these stu- dents are appropriately able to step out in- to the business world. GETTING THE POINT Enacting the historical scene of Brutus' sui- cide, running on a sword held by his servant, are World History stu- dents Tom Weiss and jim Vena. The Social Studies Department had a new arrival this year-the economics class. Students who took this course were enthus- iastic about its benefits. It gave them a deeper understanding of money and labor in this country. On April 21 and 22, the American Gov- ernment classes saw the movie adaptation of the Pulitzer prize winning novel The Making of a President 1960,' by Theodore H. White. They had previously read this best-seller in conjunction with the course. Two contests were held last spring. Jun- iors took part in the 39th Annual 32 High School Contest on the United Na- tions Essay Contest in their senior year. A S300 scholarship and a chance to partici- pate in the state contest enticed seniors in- to entering the Elks contest on the Consti- tution held in the spring. Both of these contests required intense study by the par- ticipants. Geography, world history, and Ameri- can history were also oH'ered. There classes examined the past by means of their text- books and with the aid of the weekly news- paper, the American Observer, discussed current problems. Soczczl Studzes S -:kwa ,hbia H. A complete set of Gregg records, sup- plemented by ,other kinds, and three elec- tric typewriters facilitated learning to type. Rewards included higher grades in other subjcts since teachers prefer typewritten assignments. Shorthand is offered with typing and since last year the new Diamond Jubilee series of Greg shorthand was taught. For those interested in a course in machine shorthand the department obtained three stenotypes-devices used by court reporters to record testimonies of witnesses. Short- hand was a valuable aid in classes where speedy note-taking was essential to main- tain good marks. A new machine devoted to the task of saving mental effort is the Tenkeymatic, a device that adds and subtracts. Perhaps the only problem was the mental effort in- volved in learning to operate the 'Ten- key-matic? For students who plan on entering the business field in earnest, courses were taken at Vocational School which offers an in- tense commercial course including machine calculation, bookkeeping, business English, and business math. INSTANT-IZED Linda Mohrbachef and Carol Patzman take die tation on the steno-type machine, the newest innovation in St. Cath- erine'.v Business Education Department. For this year, however, French, Span- ish, Russian, German and Latin satisfied the needs of most of the students. Using the language labs and their facili- ties aided students in obtaining authentic accents and also helped them to gain a clearer understanding of and a closer re- lationship with the people who speak these languages as their native tongues. As col- leges become more and more insistent on at least one year of a foreign language as an entrance requirement, more students than ever make good use of the three well- equipped labs in obtaining a good speaking, reading, and writing knowledge of the lan- guage of their choice. The visual aids, used with good results, proved themselves prac- tical and made language classes livelier ac- quiring Huency in a different tongue was an interesting and valuable experience throughout the year. A new method of teaching chemistry was intro- duced on a trial basis at St. C-atherine's. The stu- dents took chemistry for two periods a day for a se- mester and the other half of the year was spent in studying English. There were, besides this new type of course, the regular chemistry classes and an ad- vanced classes and an advanced class for those who had a higher learning ability. In biology, students learned the various internal structures of worms, crayfish, grasshoppers, frogs and Hsh by dissection. Additions in equipment were seven nero microscopes, a laboratory oven and a refrigerator. Welcomed in physics classes was the addition of six power sources, six transistor multi-meters. which measure sound, wave lengths, and voltage, a tape recorder and a signal generator. Today's emphasis on science will make the knowl- edge obtained in the science courses well worth the gaining. HOME BREW In their chemistry class jim Kristan and Rich Koenings collect oxygen by means of a generator to verify the various properties of oxygen. 41 The Science cyf Words INFORMATIVE INGREDIENTS With the assistance of Sister Rose Ellen. Eg, A 42 MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING In Speech, Kay Krause poses in a coat she ended up buying after she started out to purchase a button for her old coat. English, a required but profitable subject, gave to its students a better understanding of the structure and significance of the English language. Each year in every department changes are made and new equipment is added. This last year was no exception: in Fresh- man and Sophomore English classes, sets of composition books were used. These books helped the students compose better themesg to facilitate learning in the ad- vanced English classes, revised editions of the Scott Foresman Literature Series were introduced. Senior English classes had another Team -teaching course added. For this class an overhead projector was installed in the caf- eteria classroom where the class met daily. Math Students Carol Totem, Dan Kovara, and Bob Baggott attempt to see how probable the Law of Probability is. If new methods plus well-trained faculty equal well-rounded math students, St. Catherine's has proved another t.ried-and- true axiom. Most SCHS scholars met their mathe- matical challenge in the form of basic col- lege-prep courses: algebra, geometry, and trig. To augment these, a new junior-sen- ior course was inaugerated this year to ac- quaint those not bound for college with some of the important principles and topics of modern math. Numeration systems other than base ten were studied along with ap- plication of probability and elementaiy sta- tistics. Fundamentals of mathematics have al- ways been a must-from second grade Numbers to five syllable senior subjects like trigonometry and probability. Here at St. Catherine's, from the time freshmen struggle through the new language of al- gebra up to senior math, every effort is made to make the mathematical curricu- lum a well-rounded one-applicable to each student's individual needs and cap- abilities. Recognizing that the repeatedly-mem tioned need for math and science is more than trite educational propaganda, St. Catherine's offers unlimited opportunities in the field of mathematics. K .Ag E A ,A Fighting the dreaded disease of hypo- kenesia fsoft flabby flesh around the mid- dlej, St. Catherinites were faithful in their gym class attendance. Morning and after- noon the gyms resounded with a conglom- eration of bouncing ball, whistles blowing, buzzers buzzing, and above it all, the shouts of active participants. For the first few months of the school year students wondered if they would sur- vive the vigorous grind of push-ups, run- ning, and tumbling. They soon realized theyicl have to. Girls acquired poise and posture from learning the control of the muscles, which are of vital importance to their physical well-being and also to their attractiveness. The boys participated in a fitness program to develop their physical frame. In the winter basketball was the main program for both boys and girls. The girls took up square dancing, softball, volley- ball, badminton, ping pong and shuffle- board in the spring. Baseball was on the agenda for the boys. All in all students had an enjoyable time during this break in the monotony of study. Physical exercise was a pleasant relief from the routine mental work and solitarv study.
