Man's capacity for this God-life constitutes his supreme dignity-an earthling becomes one with the Deity through the miracle of grace. Truth will not be muftledg the vision of beauty cannot be contained. When men live deeply the truth and see vividly the beauty, they aspire to utter the truth and mirror the beauty of God. Foreground Ileft to fightl: Dave Hochgurtel '56, Virginia Salak '58. Background: Sheila Bischel '57, Karen Schneider '59. As students of religion, English, and the foreign languages we shared in a living tradition to which we contributed. Enlarging and eherishing the power of communication made us unique as masters and creators. Thus we became involved in literary types, we tracked down participles and gerunds, and we plunged into the maelstrom of declensions and conjugations. FINAL CHECK UP. Festive moments, enchanted evenings, days of study, year of football champions, re- treat days of silence-all this and more we packed into 900 hours. Tests measured our educational aptitudes and achieve- ments. Throughout the years spent in ab- sorbing the traditions, teachings, and truths of a great and glorious school, we have discovered the dignity and freedom of the human mind, the supreme reality of God and of one's soul. Patterning our lives on this design, we, through the echoes of our living, will herald anew glad tidings of eternal joy. When trigonometry students attempt to solve the functions of any angle, they need plenty of paper, time, and talent. Left to right: Bill Ramcke, jean Ann Francois, Carol Bonini, and Ralph Principe speculate upon the final step. We experienced the necessity of precision of thought as well as precision in work. We came face to face with the challenge of a supersonic era in which we prayed, worked, and played. With its many alluring promises of material progress, science has released man from heavy physical burdens so that he can now freely pursue the intellectual, the artistic, and the spiritual with fewer obstacles. However, the question arises: will the light of science direct man through the labyrinth of material wealth on to its Creator? For us remains the choice. Upon this decision rests the fate of civilization, WEIGHTY PROBLEMS. ,lust a hairline more and the scales will balance for Peter Oehmen, who is completing a physics experiment. Wi as ith Junior Tempo we stepped forward Z0 fzssunze the resgb0115z'bilitz'es of upperclassnzefz. We continued fighting brave battles over un- glaxnorous desks. Double sessions caught us go- ing to and from school with books piled five and six high for eligibility and for promotion. In the crevices of our busy hours we found time to wedge in gab sessions, to try new cheers at pep rallies, and to join clubs or serve on com- mittees. We showed a bit of talent, too, when we presented Mistletoe Madness. On the side we brought home a few forensic trophies and did our mite to cop the l955 football champion- ship. Spring came and with it our class rings. Abruptly we were on the threshold of our senior year. The year got off with a leaping start when we were elected to produce the first of a series of student shows. With memories of Whispering Hope and of Dancing Cacti from the Si Si Senorita tucked away for future reference, we settled down to a normal routine of theorems and declensions. Although mid semester exams cast a shadow on the horizon, winter holidays offered a welcome respite. Our thoughts turned to the all-important things of life during the annual retreat while we took stance of our spiritual growth. Before we realized it spring was upon us, and we sighted the junior goal. Dictation and transcription exercises prepared us to accom- plish the tasks of a secretary efliciently and conf1dently. Daily practice in beating out a rhythmic usdf and in posting journal entries transformed neophytes into professional secretaries and accountants. To complete our course, we analyzed the fundamental Christian principles necessary for the stability and security of economic life and well-being. SECRETARY OF TOMORROW. Bob Cramer fstarzdirzgl points out balance in credit column to Cidentifiablej Bob Markus, Milly Ancinec, and Nick Miller. 49 Cf Freshman Days we, on the second shift, alone bear witness. With ample corridor space we shuttled swiftly from class to class. We strug- gled through the traditional stages of every typical Latin and algebra stu- dent. Some of us made the Honor Rollg others were elected as our leaders. Gradually we drank in the spirit of St. Catherines by attending upperclassmen assemblies and by com- pleting the rooting section at varsity games. We pledged ourselves as saints and scholars to uphold with undaunted loyalty a priceless heritage of a Catherinite. Filling Red Cross boxes, pro- viding Christmas dinners and collecting clothing for the needy, and sponsoring the Lenten collection of funds for missionaries afforded many oppor- tunities to experience the true joy of giving. MISSIONS COMMITTEE. Co-Chairmen: Margaret Zinnen, janet Finsen. Armed with the firm conviction that the source of all strength lay in the Holy Eucharist, the Eucharis- tic Committee fought to increase frequent recep- tion of Holy Communion. Soliciting membership in the Knights and Handmaids of the Blessed Sacra- ment and conducting a Youth Week campaign set the stage for their initial projects. EUCHARISTIC COMMITTEE. Co-Chairmen: James Held, Rose Marie Porirz. In defense of the Catholic viewpoint members of the Discussion Committee learned how to refute modern attacks on the Faith. Three major projects of the year, the Homecoming shrine to Mary, the Christmas parade float, and the Worltl Sodality Day program, rebounded with the zeal and enthusiasms of Marys devotees. OUR LADY'S COMMITTEE. Co-Chairmen: julie Haislmaier, Mary liazzari. That Christs truth might prevail in a troubled world was the goal of the Catholic Truth Com- mittee. By gaining a hetter knowledge of Catholic doctrine. they were equipped to meet the enemy who appeared in the form of immoral literature and materialistic ideas. They also strengthened their position by promoting subscriptions to Cath- olic reading for the Catholic home. CATHOLIC TRUTH COMMITTEE. Chairman: Judy Bonini. The Personality'l.eadership Committee realized the need for future leaders among Catholic laymen. Rotating chairman duties for monthly meetings provided an opportunity for the individuals to practice leadership. Through timely discussions on ways and means to develop personality, a neces- sary asset for leadership, a standard was set for personal improvement in little everyday affairs. All music groups unite in melody and song at the Musical Extravaganza, the spring music festival. Trombones slid into shivering vibratos, trum- pets sent forth the bugle call, woodwinds throbbed, and drums tumbled on. Daily re- hearsals under Mr. John T. Opferkuch, band director, soon eliminated the uncertain tones and sounds. When Homecoming festivities drew near, the marching unit led by Robert Tykal, drum major, drilled routine forma- tions and maneuvers for the parade. Dennis Baumgardt, a senior trombone player, rallied a pep band to participate in pep assemblies and to spirit the team at basketball games. In addition to preparing for the school's music festival, the band continued to perfect selections for the festival sponsored by the Wisconsin School Music Association. Through daily practice sessions twenty-Eve pioneers achieved musical success. Bowers and pluckers of strings revived the tones of youth and joy, of pain and passion, of majesty and glory. Before them danced notes, signs, and symbols as each music-maker interpreted his scores. They exhibited skill and com- petency at the sophomore student show, the annual Christmas program, and the Musical Extravaganza.
