Knowledge of math Will assure to us that We are treating our neighbors fairly in business dealings and are re- ceiving fair returns. Figures do not lie. Algebra, simple and ad- vanced, geometry, general busi- ness, and trigonometry were all part of the daily life of students this year. Page ll Science Oftentirnes Saint Catherine in her service to the sick found that a man may be Won by service to his body. To those students who wish to prepare for lifework in medi- cine or other professions requiring science, the school offers a full four-year program. All freshmen sign up for general science, sophomores who Wish have an opportunity to take biology, juniors and seniors have a choice of chemistry, physics, or both. For the first time this year the Bausch and Lomb Scientific Award is being offered. The senior who obtains the highest average in the three major sciences will be the re- cipient. Kesser. Schuit. Social Science To know a nation's geography, her background, and her history is to understand her people. This background that fosters interna- tional unity is obtained from the study of World and American history and a newly-offered course in world geography. A homeless, starved man makes a poor citizen, so through econom- ics We learn about the material means of satisfying human needs. Commercial Science From business tycoon down to the littlest stenographer and filing clerk, they all must know the rudiments of business. Students Who will attempt to take the business bull by the horns after graduation find the commer- cial courses offered here invaluable. Typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, and office practice form the training of these future business men and Women. Left Helen Iuare Whether it be draping a fabric, daubing in oil, or pushing a T- sguare around, it all comes under the heading of art, fine or practi- cal. Enthusiasts of these subjects find four years each ot clothing, fine art, and mechanical drawing on the curricula. Top: Pfeiffer. Vash, Arendt. Whelan Bottom: Higgins, Kirklewski. Pulice. Vallner. Kiess The Arts Patricia McAllister Elaine Kowcxlsky Right Nici' Music With a song in their hearts, people are inspired by emotion to iollow a cause, an ideal, a principle. Music is one of the most persuasive powers known to rnan. We learn to speak the international language of rnusic in choral and band classes. ln both departments, theory and appreciation are stressed, be- sides the actual practice. Seniors . . . Bright Flame This class of 1946 may well be called the class of many changes. In our fresh- man year, we saw Father Doherty trans- ferred and took part in that momentous assembly to greet our new president, Father Witkowiak. VVe've seen our school day get shorter and shorter and tinally shrink to a halt-day session. First realization of our impending grad uation came at the Senior Supper. We had heard about it for so long, and now it was actually here. Soon the go-ahead signal to have class pictures taken was given, and there was a mad scramble to the photographers Orders for class rings, announcements, and fittings for gradua- tion gowns followed swiftly. We took time out to put on the class play and get behind the Play-Prom Project with a bang. Our last year is straining at the leash to be closed. Dancing at the Prom will make us happy and at the same time give us a little nudge of regret at its being our last Prom. Before we know it we'll be at the Senior Breakfast after You can see Father Uhen. Sherman, Smith. Ram- melt. Coach Dermody. 'g f ff . ' 747 I - l li .WIN an . 'H' 5' N N: ' . Won't the girls look a little strange in their civvies ? Then we'll attend the Award As- sembly Where recognition of achievements are handed out to the deserving. There it will be, that Shield, Band, Player, or Chorister pin we've worked so hard to obtain. Come evening, we'll trail up the aisle to the strains of a melody we'll never hear again without having a queer little lump creep into our throats. And as we listen to the Graduation address, one fact looms up swiftly and surely-why, it's over. The senior Choristers are Mares. Pfeiffer. Kiess- ling. Higgins. Bauernfeind. Arendt. Oh. upperclassmen may haze them good-naturedly. but it's all in fun. and the whole student body has a warm spot in its heart for the frosh. In their first year treshies attend afternoon sessions and iol- low a general program that covers a variety of subjects. They have their own Sodality with separate committees. Oi the activities in school, the only ones open to them at this time besides Sodality are Press Club and G.A.A. To the class of '48 goes credit for taking the initiative in starting the Eldred Williams collection among the students. A great crowd. Secretary Kathleen Griffin, President Iames Dcrment, Treasurer Michael Cranley, and Vice-President Iames Moe. On the way to class are McCarthy, Peach. Williams. Under direction of Mr. Orville Dennody, who became the first coach in Catholic Conference history to win a league with two teams, and Mr. Frank Schinkowitch, the '45 gridders not only won the title but were undefeated On the and untied in all of their games. The team scored a total of 229 points against 25 for the opposition. Five St. Catherinites: Rammelt, Rondi- nelli, guards: Mares, Peterson, halfbacks: and Mohrbacker, end, made first string on the Milwaukee Iournal Catholic Con- ference All Stars, and two: Venne, quar- terback, and Mizer, end, earned second string berths. Mares led the Catholic Conference in scoring and, counting non- conference games, totaled 78 points. Rammelt was elected honorary captain of the '45 squad. Easily outpointing the Bombers, St. Catherine's thrashed St. Benedict's 26-0 at Horlick Field, Sept. 23, to begin their victorious season. The varsity ran rampant in their first conference battle and trampled Pius Xl 33-0, Oct. 7, here. Five 'backs scored the tallies and the backfield plunged 276 yards to Pius' 44. A tough, toe to toe battle was finally snatched by the Angels from Messmer, there, Oct. 14. The Bishops led at the half until Doug Venne faked a field goal and tossed the winning pass to Iohn Miz- er. Precedent was smashed when the Black and White dethroned Marquette 26 - U, Oct. 21, in Marquette Stadium. The Iunior Hilltoppers had not lost a confer- ence game in six years until the victory- bound Angels conquered them. The string of victories was lengthened Kelly, No. 25, runs interference as Wells, No. 32. stands by in the Homecoming game. As an after season workout, the Black and White, in their first game with Zion City High School, easily defeated the Illinois team 33-U, there, Nov. 9, writing finis to a spectacular year.
