Elaborate preparations for this event were in progress. But the announce- ment of the Pope's death changed festivity into mourning. Because of constant labor and pressing troubles, the Pope's health had been de - clining for several years and he was often close to death. Each time, his recovery seemed a miracle. Frequent breakdowns and frequent returns to health had become a common thing. One day His Holiness would be seriously illg the next he would be not only well but addressing large audiences or speaking over the radio. It was his indom- itable will and strength of mind which kept him in his condition. Pope Pius was more concerned with the duties of his august office and the needs of his millions of subjects and of humanity in general than with his own health and comfort.
