ommercial epartment Two years ago, thirty-nine girls came together for the purpose of entering a new field-the field of commercial education. It was such a happy day for us. For several months, we had wondered whether we ought to continue our academic work or turn to the commercial field. Only those whose record was good and who showed a per- sonality suitable for ofiice work were advised to go into the Commercial Department. Although it was a new venture for us, we felt that it offered many unusual oppor- tunities. And so it did. Today, we step out into the Business World fully equipped to take our place as leaders in this field. We had heard that the improvement in economic conditions and in business was responsible for an increasing demand for well-prepared office workers and this prep- aration we knew could be obtained in St. Brendan's Commercial Department. Our course embraced a thorough training not only in the basic business subjects-introduo tion to business, business arithmetic, and business law-but also in typewriting, stenog- raphy, transcription and secretarial training. This thorough course of training enabled us to meet the requirements for the State High School Diploma in business subjects. Employment standards are considerably higher now than formerly and are being raised each year. But with the adequate business equipment, efficient instruction, and successful guidance policies, we have been enabled to arrive at this standard and to secure profitable positions. Someone in passing said, Office work is monotonousf' It will never be for us. We know that apparently we will be kept busy with the mediocre things of life, but in reality we will as Francis Thompson, said of Shelley, Treat the universe as a box of toys. We will dabble in the sunset and find ourselves gold-dusty with stumbling amid the stars. We will dance in and out of the gates of heavenf, Our Blessed Mother will be our counsellor. In this, as in all other fields, we will be confronted with many difficult problems which will require her guidance. She will ever be to us the ideal woman. Through her, we will reach her Divine Son, and by our example help our co-workers to reach our goal-Heaven. 67
