The printer's ink cannot duplicate the indelible markings on our hearts. The moments of despair, when the gentle touch of a consoling hand ofttimes gave us the desire to go ong the sweet assuring smile that came to us when we reached a stumbling block-these were the things we did not find in our books. Sometime in the far future we may casually glance through these pages, and try to remember. Time will never erase these memorable years for us, you see,-We will never forget. A ,'9'yr r 9 'liify .24 3 edication To you, our beloved and esteemed friend, Right Reverend Monsignor, we affectionately dedicate this book. Because nothing we attempted to write, nothing of rhymed or prosaic composition seemed to speak our thoughts on this, the occasion of your Silver Jubilee, may it suffice as a lasting memory of our devotion to you. Yet, we will attempt to put into words the prayer that He, before Whose eyes now stand written in silver peneilling the years you spent in His service, may grant St. Brendanis the blessing of your con- tinued presence amongst her students as the silver brightens into the gold lettering of another twenty- five years in His Sacred Preisthood. RIGHT REVEREND M0NsIcNoR FRANCIS XAVIER DOWNING, PH.D 5 Dear Graduates: May I express my deep and sincere congratulations upon the success- ful completion of your high school course. The strength that comes to you from this honorable achievement should, of itself, give you courage and strength to face the tasks that lie ahead. The world into which you go will be diferent from the one in which you have passed the last four years. Here, spiritual things were put first but you go now to a worhi that even scojs at the unseen, placing all its hopes, its strivings on the amassing of material things. Never forget what Saint Brendan's High School has meant to you. If you keep the ideas learned here before you, your devoted teachers, who are proud of your accomplishments so far, will have cause to rejoice with you in the latter day. e SISTER MARY DAVID 6 Q fyft w,w1f.:', '55 R Q ' gwgf -Q , ,,,.,,,..,,N, Z . 3. .. x... , x f N' '. .. k Q - - I 1 - 'l.iwf..I'5 4 it J' al Yr Ap as Y X' B' N352 ' X Q. Her classmates know her as an all-round good pal! Those who worked with her cannot help but admire her coordinated efforts to make all her extra curric- ular activities an outstanding success! Joan's popularity among her classmates insures her success in whatever field she chooses for her life's work. And, if past events cast their shadows, then, certainly, that success is Joan's already! ' anuary Class :story ,c 'Hu ,uv Four years-four whole years!! It seems impossible that they have faded away into sweet memories, leaving in their wake only a trail packed with laughter, joys, tears and sorrows of our voyage on the good ship St. Brendan. And yet as we look back now, is there one of us who would exchange her ticket for one on any other ship? When we docked in the port where Freshmen reign supreme, the storm clouds hovred dangerously low above us. The Seniors gazed upon us with an expression, which may be likened to that of a black panther ready for the kill. We hoveled in packs, hoping to avoid their paths. But horrors!! Hazing week came and all the dignity we had acquired as high school students went to the four winds. Curlers, inverted skirts and multi-colored socks certainly pulled our pride down to its lowest level. Then, of course, Latinus-a-um and x, y, z, didn't make the stay in port any pleasanter. But the haze which surrounded us was soon to lift and as we set sail once more, the extra-curricular activities of our Alma Mater were already beginning to claim our precious hours of freedom. The birds and bees of the spring of 1945 found our ship docked in a harbor, beached on the spirit-crushing rocks of the isoceles triangle and brain intricacies of the subjunctive mode. But we were Sophomores -mighty Sophomores, although we still couldn't understand why Brutus had not thrown a dagger at Caesar sooner. Certainly, had we lived at the time when Rome was at her zenith, we would have done so. But Brutus was an honorable man!! Just imagine carving a pound of flesh out of poor Antonio's body. Thatis a rather silly thing to do, isnit it? But you know Shakespeare!! He can get his characters into the most foolish predicaments. Compared to Euclid's brain child, however, Caesar and Shakespeare seemed like childs play. Of course, everyone knew that if two lines are parallel, the alternate interior angles are equal but we had a slight difficulty in expressing ourselves. By the time the Regents rolled around, our ship was really our home but our feeble brains, burdened with circles, triangles and the golden fleece,', were groping wildly in the darkness trying to decide which course the ship would take when we set sail for the port of Juniors. Would it be Commercial or Academic? Then like a bolt out of the blue, the Miracle of Miracles happened!! We passed the Regents and graduation was only two long years away. Tucked away, neatly in a corner of our brains, Geometry and Caesar became only memories, as Physics, Chemistry and Typing began to absorb our every minute. Those who continued with their academic course found themselves staggering under an excessive load of home- work. The Commercial Students became involved in the problems of who should give what commission to whom after what discount had 24 f Ill vi X l -V rs--ff 3 been taken from what selling pricef, They learned how to pound the typewriter and how to become the boss's favorite secretary. The Chem lab became the hide-out of a group of dangerous creatures who were determined to blow up the school by hook or by crook. Undoubtedly, they tried their best, but the remainder of the class wondered if the concocting of Hydrogen Sulfide was a part of the pipe-dream. For days the school wore its nose in a handkerchief. Physics proved to be a less hectic hurdle to some extent. For the most part, electricity was confined to the pages of the text book and oxygen, light and heat were found easily accessible when the lab beckoned us for experimentation. Before we could say 'gParlez-vous francais? the Regents floated down from Albany and we discovered that it was time for the last lap of our journey-our Senior year. At long last, we were Seniors and three years of drudgery lay behind us. But oh-what lay ahead of us-Intermediate Algebra! lt was during this memorable past of our voyage' that we began to wonder if 2 plus 2 equals ?-?+? or 4-. When we began our correspondence with our good allies the French, the postman became round-shouldered, burdened down with letters marked Par Avion. Needless to say, when the correspondence began to include les hommes as well as les jeunes filles, the mailman gave up his job for a less strenuous one. The first part of the year flew by so quickly and before we knew it we were the sole custodians of the senior stairs, the stairway that leads to-the padded cells. And then came thatlong awaited event-the arrival of our Senior rings. To us, the blue stones were as precious as a ten carat diamond and weeks followed before we could parade through the .halls without dangling our hands in mid-air. Our social life began to play, a major part with the advent of the Freshman Dance. Glory crowned our heads as we watched the shivering Freshmen parade before us, just as we had done four years before. The Hallowe'en and Thanksgiving Dances followed soon afterwards and last but not least came the Prom. And yet, there was a sad note injected into these activities for we knew that each day drew closer to that day of days-Graduation. Now, we must leave our ship the good St. Brendan and board vessels that will carry us to various ports-to marriage, to business and even to the religious life. We shall be free to make our own decisions, to form our own opinions and to mold our own lives. Our voyage was a pleasant one. It was not a bed of roses but neither was it a bed of thorns. The contacts we have made will gradually fade away into the sea fogg some of the knowledge we have gained will desert us-but the memories we have of these gay, delightful years will live on. Thank you, dear St. Brendan's, for everything. May God be with you always. 25 Vltrrakl Q W ka Wm 1 HWY I? W 'wr W5 E AA ' X 'P ,f 139 S ei PE-A - 1 K , ,-., , Q A-, . Sister' Mary David tlooking forward to her first year at St. Brendan'sj first met us when Jessie led the Conga line across the geography of the intri- cate fourth floor. Then came the Freshmen Dance-armed with baby dolls and stocking caps, we howled as Anita Taormina told us some kind gentleman offered her and her 'fbaby a seat in the bus. With Mary Oliva, Mary Driscoll, Betty Delaney and Cen Tortorello taking the reigns among the Freshmen presidents we settled down to comparative sanity and got into the swing of St. Brendan tradition. Angie Aiello in the g'Welcome Homew assembly was another side-splitting light spot. Then, en masse, the whole crowd of us surged over to Regis to view A Midsummer Nightls Dream? Along with the new cafeteria, Ellen Donoghue and her lunch-room quartet helped brighten the too short lunch period. Their favorite rendition was uOnward Christian Soldiersi' for some reason or other. lngenious, as we were, we named the English class elephant-Sam. And then it was summer time already. September, 1945, and with it came Geometry and major Art. Try as we would to hide them, Miss McGlue always found the tacks we hid on the radiator. Fame called and Dotty Carpenter, Marie Wilson, Rosemarie Rotondi, Grace Celenza, Pat Azzoli, Anne Dunphy, Barbara Cole, Peggy Doheny made the Clee Club. The new bell practically pealed when Peg Chandler, Joan Murtha, Beth O'Brien, Peg O,Brien, Ellen Donoghue, Pat Keogh and Jeanette Horky augmented the Varsity. Agnes Sims and Mar Judge took up fiddling in the orchestra. Also active were the literary lights and Peggy Casey, Ann Dougherty, Ro Rotondi, Connie Peet, Alice McGuinness, Beth O'Brien and Pat Azzoli completed the Stella Staff. Of course, we canit forget the C.A. Unit and the Christmas visits to the hospitals and particularly the time Amelia Giammarino brought the pipes and tooth paste to the kids by mistake, while the paper dolls and toy drums went to the Old Men's home. Along came little Audrey Powers to step up with the colleens for the Irish Assembly. Betty Colquhoun, Alice McCuinness, Doris Harvey and Kay Murray became uthev Cheer Leaders of the team. The inimitable Bessie and Tessie spark-plugged the Dancing Club along with Jo-Ann Lombardi. At the same time, Eileen Mahr was testing Coldfinkis motzahs on the fourth floor. Miss Anderson gave up trying to get some life out of us, when Ann Dougherty, frisking about, broke her arm. But then summer was here again. September, 1946. At this point we picked our own subjects. While ,loan McLaughlin was busy writing ditties about commercial life, Ann Sferrazza and Mildred Andriola 'Ldood itv with high nineties on the aca- demic side. Marie Cross easily got the job of typing up the Parish Bulletin, while we went on to uparlez-vousf, Emerging unscathed after a series of French records on The Handkerchief of my Father and 'Tai une grande maison,', we willingly let sleeping Ciceros lie and enjoyed the summer vacation. September, 194-7, and with it a new regime-WE were seniors. Along with Intermediate Algebra and Fourth Year Latin came Senior rings and hats and the inevitable Senior Strut. The Senior Council was formed and Louise ladarola, treasurer, was running' around getting the last returns for the Farewell Dance which was a decided success. Then came the Christmas Play with Cassie Swift displaying the latest thing in Shep- herd's wear. Thanks to Sister Stanislaus, it was a terrific success in Senior Circles. Then 4-B and the sole use of the Senior Stairs! Bobby Nelson became President of the C.A. Unit, Dotty Carpenter, President of the Glee Club, Peg O,Brien, Captain of the Varsity and Mary Judge, Vice President of the Orchestra. The tears that were shed in 201 were many, because there wasn't room for them on the Senior Floor. They had a special sign printed by Catherine King and hung on the door. It read 4-Bf, Gen Tortorello, when not writing Fashion News with Dotty O'Brien, was busy as Secretary of the Senior Council. Then there were our Fresh- men-sisters and the circus of a Freshmen Dance. Pat Keating came up with a wonderful Fashion Show. Elizabeth Barone gave the music and Catherine Chevallay, Bernadette Castonova, Betty Kenny, Agnes Coyle, and Gloriette Riviera were among the models. The term went fast but Betty Maguire, Virginia Cullen and Betty Phelan managed to come late the usual number of times and Marcie Neefeldt came up with the usual number of pranks. The last few dances . . . our Farewell Dance and then the Prom . . . It was such a happy day for us. For several months, we had wondered whether we ought to continue our academic work or turn to the commercial field. Only those whose record was good and who showed a per- sonality suitable for ofiice work were advised to go into the Commercial Department. Although it was a new venture for us, we felt that it offered many unusual oppor- tunities. And so it did. Today, we step out into the Business World fully equipped to take our place as leaders in this field. We had heard that the improvement in economic conditions and in business was responsible for an increasing demand for well-prepared office workers and this prep- aration we knew could be obtained in St. Brendan's Commercial Department. Our course embraced a thorough training not only in the basic business subjects-introduo tion to business, business arithmetic, and business law-but also in typewriting, stenog- raphy, transcription and secretarial training. This thorough course of training enabled us to meet the requirements for the State High School Diploma in business subjects. Employment standards are considerably higher now than formerly and are being raised each year. But with the adequate business equipment, efficient instruction, and successful guidance policies, we have been enabled to arrive at this standard and to secure profitable positions. Someone in passing said, Office work is monotonousf' It will never be for us. We know that apparently we will be kept busy with the mediocre things of life, but in reality we will as Francis Thompson, said of Shelley, Treat the universe as a box of toys. We will dabble in the sunset and find ourselves gold-dusty with stumbling amid the stars. We will dance in and out of the gates of heavenf, Our Blessed Mother will be our counsellor. In this, as in all other fields, we will be confronted with many difficult problems which will require her guidance. She will ever be to us the ideal woman. Through her, we will reach her Divine Son, and by our example help our co-workers to reach our goal-Heaven. 67 Q Q3 69 G S5 w' ,ff x Quilt, . F eve M WS W qqona III 0:06 We RESIST IT THE ORCHESTRA A Note about Notes Because weive lived and loved the songs, We're leaving now behind, In all our hopes and fears ahead A song we'll surely had. As the metronome of Time ticks into its fine passage in a remarkably allegro beat, we realize that now we're at the climax of four years, melody. Soon, instead of the carefree signature of sharps and flats we found so difficult to remember, we'll be con- fronted with phrases of discord, which we must transpose into harmony, at the begin- ning of each new measure of endeavor. From this chord on,ilife will be a composition of the joys we find in Chopins' Waltzes-the sorrows felt in Beethoven's Rapsodies. In the orchestra, weive learned how to enjoy hard work, and how to strive for perfection, and to appreciate accomplishment. Music has prepared us for the unforseen future, so that we will accept Christ's Divine Plan with a song in our hearts. Turning back over the pages of our high school music, we find within their bars, notes of ambition, labor, happiness-joined together to form chords of success. Success-such a small word to mean so much! Success in having delighted our audi- ences on so many occasions, success in becoming one of St. Brendan's vital functions, success in cramming happy lifetime memories into four years of bi-weekly meetings of our orchestra. Music cannot live without a sturdy staff to support it. The orchestrals staff is ably mjmed by our -director, Miss Belsito, and our very proficient managers, Sister Mary James and Sister Regina Mercedes. To them we owe the accomplishment which four years have produced. Thank you, could not reveal the sincere gratitude our hearts might express-if they could speak. Saying goodbye to St. Brendanls Orchestra-is bidding farewell to one of the dearest friends weive had in high school. However, tears disappear in the remembrance of the priceless gift we carry with us through life-music. Thus, we surrender our places in the orchestra to our successors, and pray that we may be remembered in time to come. Surely, the honor of playing in St. Brendanis orchestra, as well as the apprecia- tion and knowledge of music we have acquired thereby will never be forgotten by us. 73 T e Varsity of ' Weill win . . . easily! With these almost legendary words as an inspiration the ,4-8 team marched forth to meet the foe. The origin of this expression is now, almost as famous as the varsity itself. One bright afternoon, a reporter of the Stella stall approached our beloved Bertie Cavanaugh and coyly asked what the chances for victory were at the next game. Without the slightest hesitation, Bertie', replied the renowned quotation which has been as a bulwark against our rivals when the going got tough. The following day, we played The Mary Louis Academy and sorrowfully enough suffered one of our few defeats. From that day forth, Miss Cavanaugh was the target of severe jostling on the part of her team-mates. 4'Bertie,,' however took all the teasing in her good natured way and for this reason has been accepted as the idol of St. Brendan's Varsity. The '4-8 team boasted a rostra of girls filled with a keen spirit of sportsmanship and player ability. ,loan Broncaccio, the team manager for two years did her job well and without a thought of reward. Forwards, Jeanette Horky, Joan Murtha, and Frances Onorato worked ceaselessly to increase their scoring percentage for the love of S. B. H. Peggy O'Brien who succeeded Bertie as captain, after her graduation in January, was the little one of the team, little in size but mighty large in scoring power. Peggy piled up the highest individual scoring record for the season. Right up in the midst of noteworthies, we find Pat Keogh, hard-working co-captain whose mirth and humor brought smiles even when the odds were against a Brendan victory. Guardsg Peggy Chandler, Ellen Donoghue, and Rita Sasso proved themselves to be A-1 defen- sive mechanism. Ellen originated the titleiof Bertie for Grace from a song entitled Pistol Packin' Bertie-lay that forward down. Grace was not a rough player, she just didn't recognize her own strength, ahem! Beth O'Brien who hails from the same territory as Peggy O'Brien has been one of our mainstay guards. Looking back upon a successful season, the varsity players recalled the toughest game of all. That was the two point victory over Fontbonne Hall, 26-24-. Many people hoped and prayed for the winning of this game! among them Sister Mary Amadeus, for many years our beloved moderator of sports affairs, and also Sister Bernadette de 74 Lourdes, her able assistant. The last few seconds were so tense and so filled with the screams of excited onlookers that the varsity called for a time-out. As the players gathered in a circle, someone, no one seems to know exactly who, suggested that they devote the team to Our Lady of Fatima with the special intention that she help the cause of a Brendan victory. It seems that Our Lady, through Her Loving Son heard their prayers and the thrill of victory was ours. This triumph was the last of the first half and was followed by a tremendous celebration. A huge cake bearing the inscrip- tion, We'll win . . . easily! was carried to Bertie by the cheerleaders. Eventfully enough this climaxed the '48 varsity victories. There are many people who make up a successful varsity aside from the players. There are those who cheer them on and those who assist in the technical details. We have been privileged to have two very worthy and sportsmanlike girls as the timekeeper and the scorekeeper for the varsity. These girls graduate as part of the '48 team. To Connie Peet and Maryanne Paradise, the 1948 seniors can only say 'ithank you for the work they did without thought of praise and with unselfish motives. Also, with the varsity of '4-8 graduate our four high spirited cheerleaders. Kay Murray, captain, Doris Harvey, Betty Colquhoun and Alice McGuinness have shown their patriotic school spirit and have become inspirational to the girls who will carry on for them. A cheering squad, second to none has been trained under their direction and is equally worthy of praise. High on this list is Miss Virginia Foley, a Brendan alumna and coach of the '48 point-getters. Miss Foley strove incessantly to teach the girls new plays to confuse the enemy. Then, too, there is Miss Margaret Shehan, better known as Peg. She has been our staunch ref, always ready to straighten a play and call a play straight. The season of '48 is finished but the varsity of St. Brendan High School of 1948 will live on. Bertie's birthday party, Ellen's ballerina dance, the actions of Snutfy and Snuffy's cousin, Queenie, all the bus rides, the favorite- With a Heigh and a Ho and a . . . Ho Ho, Bonga, Wongaf' the games won and even the games lost, the entire thrill of being part of such a grand group will be a memory for a long time. The '48 varsity bids adieu to all including Patsy and Andrew who kept the gym floor in perfect condition. They have but one message to give to future varsity members before they leave the portals of their Alma Mater. We'll win . . . easily! To select words to describe music is difficult, for there is so much beauty in it. The world needs music and music needs the world! ln view of these facts, it is inevitable that St. Brendanis should have a Glee Club. For the past four years, the Clee Club has been under the capable direction of Mrs. Edward O7Connell. The fruits of many rehearsals are reaped when invitations are extended to its members to sing for the poor and the inlirm. As they see the happy countenanees of these people listening to their singing, they receive their thanks. Of late, the members of the Clee Club have been invited to sing over the air. The Clee Club says it with music each year when they present their Spring Recital. Perhaps the greatest honor ever bestowed upon its members was that of singing for the glorification of Cod at the Graduation Masses. DOROTHY CARPENTER ROSEMARIE RoToND1 I 1 St. Brendan Catholic Action Unit We present to you the pioneers of the Catholic Action Unit in St. Brendan's High. They are the Nation's Best! We were glad, to meet themg we are sorry to lose them. It is only au revoir, because they have so much to offer this troublesome world of ours with their untiring efforts and unstinted generosity, that we know their connections with St. Brendan's will be many and often.
