Father Cyprian, closing the annual retreat and Thirteen Hour Devotion 'X lx' Page 11 +V! ,ji Wy God and Q-9VIy All The thirteenth century learned a valuable lesson when it discovered the great St. Francis of Assisi. Voluntarily stripped of all material things, he at- tained true happiness, peace, harmony with all creation, and heights of sancti- ty, not because he despised the World but because he recognized its proper relationship to spiritual values. 'From this perspective he understood that he possessed all things when he most obviously abandoned them reaching for their Creator. Thus his cry: My God and my all! Hence the great emphasis placed by the followers of the Poverello at St. Bonaventure on the spiritual life of its students. Daily Holy Mass, morn- ing and evening prayers, recitation of the rosary, weekly Confession, Way of the Cross, devotions to St. Anthonyg special Marian devotions in May and October, and March devotions in honor of St. Joseph. The primary purpose of this emphasis is to strengthen the supernatural life - life with God- within each Bonaventurite so that possessing it he too could exclaim: My God and my all! 1 1J1 0C6SS1Ol'l During the Thirteen Houi Dexo tiox ' .

'Toward Franciscan Ideals Fortunately for each Bonaventurite the Franciscan ideals towards which he is expected to strive do not remain an unknown, indefinite quantity. Shortly after his arrival in Bona- town he becomes acquainted with the local Tertiary fraternity. He soon discovers that the Third Order Secular is a true religious Order founded by the great Saint of Assisi precisely for people living in the world but aspiring to a better life after the manner of the early followers of Fran- c1s. On October 3rd, the vigil of the Feast of St. Francis, invariably each newcomer fourteen years of age is invested with the Scapular and cord of the Order. Throughout the following year he is a novice obliged to study the Tertiary rule of life. This rule demands nothing spectacular. Its precepts call for an intensive practice of the Catholic faith and morals. Simplicity, charity towards all, spirit of poverty, chastity and obe- dience, joy - these ideals become known and desired. Meetings are held for- the purpose of instructing Tertia- ries in things Franciscan and to incite them to a life according to this prayer they often hear and' repeat: Lord, Make me an instrument of Your peace! Where there is hatred - let me s-ow loveg Where there is injury - pardong Where there is doubt - faithg Where there is despair-hope, Where there is darkness - ' lightg Where there is sadness - joy.
