L -.V '-jzrai ST PETERS 1 His Holiness, Papa Pius XII P06168 Zlllwugll 47008 The World has just emerged from the frightful experience of a world war. The misery, destruction, and death brought into the world by brutal force and racial hatred have induced nations to formulate a plan that will insure peace for the World for all time. This plan for World peace is simple. It is the plan of- fered by Our Lord: the law of love - love of God and neighbor. The Fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man presup- poses justice and peace for all. Why are men afraid to follow this plan? It is due to the fact that if the law of love prevailed, individuals and nations could not step out of line to follow their private ambitions in the attainment of objectives that add to their personal or na- tional glory. Love of God and man are the principles of life. Let them prevail in preference to man-made plans. The efforts of the best statesmen will be futile in trying to compose the tra- ditional differences of nations, if they leave the love of God and man out of their considerations. An enduring peace for the World has never been secured, because the principle of love has never been given a chance. Bonaventurites are thoroughly trained by dogmatic in- struction and moral practices to observe the law of love in their relation to God and fellowman. rf Q: .him ff' , 0 S'Y0 ' Pokoj - to niejako re-likwizl pozostzlla z ruju. to vzustka onegy nieskm 4-zonego I I lu. xv ktfvrym Hog' pozostaw ' - l'.. If peace is to endure, it must rest upon justice no less than upon power. The question is how justice among nations is best achieved. We know from day-to-day experience that the chance for a just solution is immeasurably increased when everyone directly interested is given a voice: That does not mean that each must enjoy an equal voice, but it does mean that each must be heard. ' The great and dominant objective of United States fo- reign policy is to build and preserve a just peace. ...It is often difficult to perceive how this central objective is best served in one isolated complex situation or another. Despite this very real difficulty, there are certain basic propositions to which the United States adheres and to which we shall continue to adhere. One proposition is that lasting peace requires genuine understanding and active co-operation among the most power- ful nations. Another is that even the support of the strong- est nations cannot guarantee a peace unless it is infused with the quality of justice for all nations. I I-Ext-emits from the l'l't'Slllt'IlI'S Message on The Sinn' of thc- l'nion. Jun. '-16.1 The principle of justice as a means of securing peace among nations and individuals is repeatedly brought to the attention of Bonaventurites to prepare them for their future role as peace makers. tlf2U0iG4tKJ live me the home whose members follow the rule of St. Francis.. He chose poverty so that he Could love better. This form of renunciation --humble, ready to love, ready to be of service to a fellowman, and asking nothing in return-became St. Francis's ideal for peace. This conception ot' poverty is taught to Bonaventurites as a means of greater understanding among themselves and as a means of realiz- ing a lasting peace through a brotherhood of individuals. WI. l'nppy, ILFJI. Rev. Claude Labmski, O.F.M. Senior Flaw xl4Nl0l'2lfUI' Senior Claw .Hia tory The autumn of 1942 saw the beginning of the downfall of the Ax- is Powers as well as the introduction of a small group of twenty-four new Freshmen to St. B0na's. lVe were a sorry sight- frightened, homesick, and on our own. But through the untiring efforts of our beloved Modera- tor, Fr. Claude Zabinski, who pointed out that in unity there is great strength, we were molded into a single co-operative body and instilled with a strong class spirit. In September 1943 the Japs had begun to feel the full might of the U.S. Forces, and we had just begun our second year of highschool work. Studies seemed easier, since we had weathered one year of St. Bona's schedule and now knew what to expect. We could therefore devote more time to other activities. For this reason we had a very successful year in sports. Germany had met the combined forces of the Allies on two fronts in Europe and was rapidly losing ground in the fall of 1944. The Class of '46 continued to gain invaluable ground during its scho- lastic conflict. In June we enviously bade farewell to the graduates and apprehensively waited to take their places. The late summer of 1945 brought about the total surrender of the last Axis power. It also brought seventeen brave members of the Don Bosco Class for their final stand at St. Bona's. The new respon- sibilities of leadership and example as seniors developed in us quali- ties which will serve us to good purpose in the diverse positions in the world of tomorrow. Graduation brings us face to face with the world. But thanks to the splendid training of our Alma Mater, we are ready for it. Ev- er mindful of our class motto: Semper Fidelisf' we successfully con- cluded our scholastic campaign at St. Bonaventure, prepared for any campaign that may face us in the future. It forms an important part of their student life and increases in value and importance as the students mature in age. An envious yearning to play in the band usually spurs the amateur musician to practice diligently' and constantly. Under the direc- tion of veteran musicians he soon masters the intricacies of music making and lays the basis for an enjoyable musical career at St. Bonaventure. The St. Bonaventure Band appears most frequently for a half hour program once or twice monthly immediately before a feature movie. Because of Wartime restrictions on traveling the performance of the band was necessarily limited to the confines of the school. Scenes from The Demon l'r'ezu'ln-r. .brama lied Motivated by the lofty ideals of the drama and the advantages derived from its production many Bo- naventurites did their utmost to insure a successful outcome of this year's endeavors. Dramatic acting at St. Bonaventure has always offered an outlet for the abilities and stage ambitions of students. Even for those who had no interest in acting, it has offered innumerable tasks of art insofar as scenery and other backstage jobs were concerned. Due credit would not be rightly apportioned unless Fr. Roland Golubiewski, O.F.M., director and moder- ator of dramatic productions, was mentioned. Fr. Ro- land's untiring efforts in producing plays was probably the greatest reason for their outstanding success. The two most important events of the year were The King's Jester and The Demon Preacher. Both were performed with enviable perfection and easily Won the opinion of all as being superbly produced. The King's Jester was a Christmas play, while the second production was given in honor of the Very Rev. Fr. Provincial's Nameday. Both plays had a religious theme placed against the background of the mediaeval ages. In the first stage play stellar performances were given by Messrs. H. Olichwier and P. Koszarek. An able supporting cast included such promising talent of the buskin as: T. Molenda, E. Pezanowski, T. Weiss. and F. Maslo. Seasoned critics of the drama among the Faculty members as well as the enthusiastic audience heartily applauded R. Konkol as the Preacher and P. Koszarek as the genial Abbot of the second production. ln sup- porting roles were found: T. Molenda, J. Nienart. T. Plawecki. E. Noga. A. Kurutz, J. Meronek, J. Rataj- czak, and H. Prawicki. Various other skits and playlets were produced at frequent intervals for the entertainment of the Bona- venture audience. 54 l 1 x ix Iei'l1:11'y pray dzuly for llie PSl2lllllSllllll'lll ul 'weave lll 4-zirlli. Slbll'lIll2ll Director Spiritual Qbireciion 652 alnnual Retreat Since We sought to become true followers of Christ, We had to develop not only the body and the mind, but also the spiritual life of the soul. Therefore, in Weekly conferences the Spiritual Director opened up before us the Way of Perfection. We have come to realize more and more that Perfection consists essentially in the love of God and of the neighbor for God's sake. To attain this objective, We were asked to avoid evil, and to practise the Theological virtues of Faith, Hope, Charity, as Well as the Cardinal virtues of Prudence, Justice, Temperance and Fortitude. We are grateful for the start that we have received and with the grace of God we are hoping to advance closer and closer to the union with Jesus Christ through the Gifts of the Holy Ghost. A good retreat reserves a ticket to heaven to the retreatant. This is why students at St. Bonaventure are offered the opportunity to make a retreat annually under the careful guidance of an experienced retreat master. I Ya-ry ll v. Accordingly, every day began with a morning offering of doing all for and through Jesus Christ. On each first Friday of the month, besides hearing Mass and receiving Holy Communion, the student body offered an Holy Hour supplicating God's forgiveness and petitioning His divine love. Then, every other month, each class under the shadows of a Sacred Heart altar sponsored an entertainment hour for the entire school body. Clean- cut fun was united with Christ's spirit of love. KN, 5, alifzfetic To keep students actively participating in all intramural sports taking place at St. Bonaventure and to create a lively interest in all athletic activities is the purpose of the St. Bona's Athletic Club. The 1945-46 sport season got off to a lively start with the ap- pointment of Father Claude Zabinski. O.F.M. as new moderator of the S.B.A.C. One of the many innovations introduced by Father Claude was a new system according to which each class is to have a representative in the S.B.A.C. by members chosen from and by respective classes. The presidency of the S.B.A.C. for the current school year was en- trusted to J. Czerniakowski, by an elective vote of the students. J. Kurcz was elected secretary. These officers together with the repre- sentatives of each class constitute the board, which sees to it that all equipment and places of contest are suitable for the respective athletic activity. Meetings of the athletic board are held monthly under the direc- tion of the moderator. At these meetings the difficulties of sports ac- tivities are solved, sport programs outlined, and current sport events discussed. 'Flu' Athletic Flulr Stuff I.:-ft to lllpghl: li. Ste-nipora, J.
