LEARNING ...gem -1 THE BON VENT RITES After completing our elementary schools, we were in quest of a school which would afford an adequate education for a Catholic American Pole. St. Bonaventure took to our immediate liking, and consequently we sought an enrollment. And our Alma Mater gave us everything we expected of it. Little did we realize that school habits will become life habits. But it did not take long before we learned the full import of the old adage non scholae sed vitae discimusf' Time and time again the faculty instilled in us the idea that eventually we shall leave the surroundings of school life to enter the turbulent world. Bearing in mind that the principal cause of our present social turmoils is a lack of character, the faculty always insisted upon the principles and teachings of Christ. For this reason, we found at St. Bonaventure both theory and practice, precept and example. The faculty itself has been a living example of service unto others. It was not interested in personal fame ,and led rather a happy but obscure life of service in our behalf. In fact, the very atmosphere and environment at St. Bonaventure is one which is calculated to foster definite virtues. Adding it all up, after the cultural and moral development which was afforded to us at St. Bonaventure, we feel that America will welcome us into its fold as citizens who know how and will preserve the freedom which we will have won after this our grue- some crusade for world peace. And in that b '- ' bittermost truth l - ' ince our Alm 1 ricf span of ' ' , tiat cverythrn ' ' T time, we have learned th g must inevitably come to an end. he mere thought of being at a boarding school, away from home, from the imme diate supervision of our parents, gave us the feeling of importance and self-sufficiency. The task, however, that it afforded, proved to be greater than we anticipated. During the first few days of our stay at St, Bonaventure we were in a maze, but gradually developed .1 firm footing on life on our own. Nor did it take long to convince us that our elementary schooldays were over. The faculty saw to that. There is no alibying that we were an exception to the rule that man seeks the paths of least resistance, but if we finally became accustomed to working out daily demands of each professor, it was only because the faculty brooked no sloth from anyone. And, so, before the first year elapsed, we took everything in stride. If in the Hrst year there was no smooth sailing, the remaining three years offered more resistance. But, now, much to our surprise, we began to take it as a matter of fact. And, even though the studies demanded more attention, application, and intellectual stamina, we carried on ever more resolutely. For, when human efforts failed, we found consolation in our motto, Vincentes Deo Fidentesf' Beginning each day hearing Mass and receiving the Holy Eucharist, we had the necessary Divine assistance to overcome all incidental scholastic difhculties. But, alas, just as we grew immune to any scholastic hardships, the year 'fl-1 tolled the knell of our career at St. Bonaventure. For, it was in December of that same memorable year, that japan drew first blood at Pearl Harbor, and subsequently America proclaimed a state of war. From the proffered list of suggested mottoes, it was Fr. Arthur janlcowski, O.F.M., our erstwhile Moderator, who was instrumental in choosing the one we retained. As our leader, he was a man of action, and one who was loathe to leave the motto an empty phrase. And, evincing his sincerity, he lived up to our motto. He joined the fighting ranks as chaplain in the U. S. Army, and has since evinced marked valor on three battle Fronts: Africa, Sicily and Italy. lfr. Henry Naparla, O.l7.M., took over the assignment for the subsequent two years. Under his paternal guidance, we were constantly reminded of the full meaning of our motto. And it is because of his untiring efforts that we strived to be the soldiers and champions of all scholastic achievements. We have worked hard to attain the level of intelli- gence and piety that is expected of us and feel' that to a certain degree, we have been successful. Our roster is only one less in number than last year, our freshman year, and we have again shown ourselves quite able in the spiritual, intellectual and athletic fields of action. Under the able guidance of the class otlicers, Vincent Downar, Pres.g Bruno Dzie- dowiec, Vice-pres.g Richard Hebel, Sec'y., and joseph Czerniakowski, Treas., the various class activities were inspired with an enthusiasm that was quite surprising. Our class banquet was one of unusual preparation and an enjoyable time was had by all the club members. Outstanding, too, was the Sophomore Bond Drive which was unique in that it featured guest artists who helped immensely in oversubscribing our quota. Rarely, too, can one expect a healthy mind in a broken- down body. One must be physically fit to rise to mental heights. The spiritual and mental development, it is true, comprise the prime objective of education at St. Bonaventures, but much attention is given to the development of the body by various physical and athletic activities. St. Bona's can boast of a large campus laid out for a variety of sports. It can boast of three baseball diamonds, a regulation track, concrete tennis courts, volleyball court, horse-shoe courts, an archery range, and a gymnasium considered to be oiie of the best and largest in Wisconsin.
