Comprised of boys from both St. Bonaventure and Columbus High, the Juniors posted a 13-8 season record, highlighted by wins over Hastings, future state champs, Lincoln Optimists and a pair of victories over Salina, Kansas State Champion and fina¬ lists in the Four State Regional Tournament. In tournament play, Columbus opened by sweeping two games from Fremont to win the District Crown and the right to partici¬ pate in the Class A Area B Regional Tourney .held this year in Grand Island. At Grand Island, the Juniors swept the tourney by defeating Norfolk and Central City twice, and gained the right to participate in the State Tournament which was held in Columbus. The State Tournament opened on August 10 with Omaha Mur¬ phys gaining a hard fought 5-3 victory over the Columbus Jun¬ iors and Hastings topping Scottsbluff 4-3. In the semi-finals, Columbus ousted Scottsbluff from the tourney by a score of 8-4, and Hastings edged Murphys, 2-1, Columbus was beaten on the next night and removed from the tourney by Murphys who sur¬ rendered their crown to Hastings in the finals by a final tally of 14-2. The Fighting Irish from St. Bonaventure experienced a sub-par season during the 1958-59 campaign as they compiled a 2-6 season record. Losing two regulars via the injury route before the season opener, the Irish bowed 13-40 to Omaha Cathedral in the debut for both squads. In their second outing, the Irish combined a potent ground and air attack to defeat Seward Concordia 24-7. How¬ ever, Hastings St. Celilia penetrated a leaky defense and defeated the Shamrocks in their third game 32-6. In the Homecoming game, David City St. Marys, a perennial enemy, out-manned the Shamrocks for a 25-0 victory. The Irish had several scoring opportunities but couldn’t seem to pick up the last few yards. Pius X of Lincoln laced the Irish, 26-0. In the following week, high rated Holy Name of Omaha had difficulty in edging the Shamrocks 20-0. Holding a slim 7-0 at half time, the Ramblers finished strong and scored twice on the screen passes in the fourth quarter. Tekemah, a new comer to the Shamrock gridiron, showed their power as they de¬ feated the Irish 28-0. However, the Shamrocks ended the long season on the right note as they defeated Grand Is¬ land Catholic 25-6 on the Crusaders home field.
