This victory also marked the first time St. Bon's defeated St. Cc-celia's in the four years they had met. In the second game, Decatur, proved to be the stumbling block. The Irish arrived late and had to start its con- test without a warmup. The results of this showed up in the first half, where the timing was poor and the defense leaky. Decatur took advantage of this to gain a 13-0 half time margin. St. Bon's came back in the last half but ap- parently not enough. The game ended 13-I2 in favor of Decatur. The Boys Town Reserves were the opponents in the third game. They were a scrappy and hard hitting bunch but went down before the improving Shamrocks 25-7. Seward proved to be one of the bigger games on the St Bon's schedule. A large Columbus following saw the Irish whip Seward I2-6. in a hotly contested game. October 10, saw St. Bonaventure meeting St. joseph cf Omaha in the annual Homecoming game. The rapidly improved Shamrocks flashed a victory over the Bluehawks. fast offense and a tight defense to climax the Homecoming celebration with a 32-6 The Irish traveled to Grand Island to meet St. Marys for the next contest. The varsity offense, coupled with a strong defense helped to gain a comfortable early margin. Final score: St. Bon's 52, St. Mary's 6. The next game on the schedule, highly regarded Holy Name of Omaha, proved to be the big one, Cletus and the boys wcnt all out to win this one and they really made a game out of it.The big gun of the Irish attack was Don Schmid, a senior fullback, who hulled and batted his way to 157 yards and one touchdown. The defense held the vaunted Rambler attatk to a mere lvl yards, less than one sixth of the total gained by Schmid. The game ended with the Shamrocks on top I9-7. This marked the first victory over a lfloly Name team in the five years of annual contests. St. Patricks of Fremont fell before the potent Shamrock attack, 38-7. The Fremont boys had size and speed, but could not-cope with the swift, flashy offense of the Irish. i The final game of the season for St. Bon's and for the seniors was Lincoln Cathedral. The line showed one ot its best defensive games against the fast offense of the invaders. Tlie offense clicked in good fashion and rolled up considerable yardage before the final gun of the game and of the season, sounded. It was a happy ending, with St. Bonaventure coming out in the end with a 20-0 score. St. Bon's rolled up 227 points in the campaign, while holding the opposition to 53. Despite the usual early season raggedness, the Shamrocks looked good in their opener. Vlfe closed the pre-holiday season with a 45-35 victory over Lincoln Cathedral. january 6 saw the Irish open the new year rolling over Schuyler, 55-42. The Catholic State Tournament was held at the Holy Name Gym, Omaha, over the 8-9-10 of january. St. Bon's took the first round with a 41-33 margin over favored Holy Name. This marked the first defeat thc Ramblers had tasted on their home court. The Sham- rocks lost a heart breaker to previously beaten Lincoln Cathedral in the finals, 36-40g but walked off with the run- ner up trophy. The Irish met St. Pat's of Fremont next and had little trouble in annexing a 49-36 win. Top ranking Lincoln Teachers, the big one of our schedule was next. The battle took place on the Nebraska Coliseum floor and was a close one until the final minutes when the defensive play of Teachers' 6'7 center and offensive spark of their sharp shooting guard proved too much for the Irish defense. The Shamrocks went down to a 37-53 defeat. The next evening St. Bonaventure played Seward Concordia and took a 65-55 verdict from them. Humphrey, St. Francis went down before the high scoring St. Bon's offense 73-44. Leigh was next and they, too, fell before the fightin' Irish 60-48. Newman Grove followed suit as the Shamrocks clippgd the Blue jay 66-48. St. Bonaventure clashed with a highlyregarded Brainard team and came out on the short end of a 41-50 decis ion. Osceola stayed wihtin range of the Irish for three periods but melted under a heavy fourth quarter barrage 68-45. Spalding Academy invaded Columbus to try their luck against the Shamrocks and went home smarting from a 59-42 whipping. Showing a leaky defense and missing numerous easy shots, Bonnies had to hustle all the way to come out on the long end of a 57-47 verdict over St. Joseph of Omaha. Regarding this as a big one, St. joe fought hard, but couldnt keep up with the speed and scoring punch of the Irish. St. Bonaventures final performance of the season was the defeat of Guradian Angel of West Point 74-49. The 74 points was a single game high score record. ...l. '7aack Track, one of the big sports here at St. Bon's will find this year's competition as tough as ever. Last year's losses will weaken the Irish in certain spots but Coach Fischer is placing his hopes in some new material. The bright spots are in the return of Larry Sanders, Dave Bowe, Ken Cielocha and jim Hoshor. These four boys qualifed for the State Track Meet last year at the class B district meet at David City. Sanders qualified for the State in the high jump with a jump of 5-SVZ and set a new school record. Bowe, Cielocha, and Hoshor were on the 880 relay team and qualified with a winning time of 1:38 on a slow track. This same team set a new school record at the Norfolk Invitational copping the relay trophy in a 1:37.6, beating such relay teams as Fremont, Norfolk, Columbus High and the mect winner, Yankton, South' Dakota. Bonnies Shamrocks also took first place in the two St. Bonaventure Intitationals, tied for fifth place in the Nor- folk Invitational, 10th in the Columbus Invitational and finished third in the District Meet at David City.
