Presenting THE BEST OF TIMES BERNARDIAN Volume LIII Si The Senior Class St. Bernard’s High School Fitchburg, Massachusetts THE BEST OF TIMES Now as Seniors we look back and review Our years that so quickly fleeted away. Which of these was the best of years? But regardless of the decision reached, We were determined that our Senior year, From the very beginning to its closing, Would be for each one the Best of Times. Reviewing Senior Candids Faculty Senior Portraits Juniors, ’82 Sophomores, ’83 Freshmen, '84 Activities Supporters of Freshman = Ss times And which na ‘3 reaki nih v ew friendships th tf At the end of 1 year and ” ® O o c + ” oO = L wo ” v0 P| (@) = ® - 4 = ars. of ye The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But | have promises to keep, And miles to go before | sleep. —Robert Frost ANTIC SPRING Michelle Couture Daniel O’Dea Prize-winning one-act play Michael Caissey Colleen Shannon March 3, 1978 Joan Nowlin Michael Thibert A team with 10 wins to its credit. Sophomore year gave us the feeling that we were no longer children And we plunged into activities to make it the very best of years. 10 11 For, by the incarnation, Jesus, the Son of God, has in a certain way united himself with each person. He worked with human hands, He thought with a human mind, He acted with a human will, and with a human heart He loved. —Second Vatican Council 12 13 As we entered Junior year, a year of class rings and JSR We had a nice feeling that it would be the best of years. 15 At morn, at noon, at twilight dim, Maria, thou hast heard my hymn; In joy and woe, in good and ill, Mother of God, be with me still. Now when the storm of fate o’ercast darkly my present and my past Let my future radiant shine with sweet hopes of thee and thine. —Edgar Allen Poe 16 17 “ANYTHING GOES”, the operetta of ’80, is set on a steamship. Billy, a well-to-do young man, (Thomas Reardon, Paul Grautski) stays aboard without money or passport, because he has caught sight of the one girl he ever loved (Cheryl Gagne, Deanna Siciliano) bound for London to marry an English nobleman (Michael Feeney, Michael Thibert) to save the family’s fortune. Reno Sweeney (Michelle Couture, Marie Plette) is the reformed evangelist who eventually falls in love with the English nobleman] The plot thickens when Billy accepts help from a bashful clergyma (Robert Favini, Matthew Gauvin) who turns out to be no parso but a dangerous fugitive. In the end after having had to disguisé¢ himself as a sailor, a cook, a nobleman, and a Chinese, Billy get his reward and the girl he loves. ( . . With Jack Bernard behind the plate, the catching was also very fine. Mark Celli at third, Steve Loughlin, and Frank Zanghi at first, co-captains Joe Balducci and Ed Tarka at second and shortstop, respectively, also accounted for the victories. Jim Adams, Mark Cunningham, and Mike Deverene in the outfield did a good job. Other players to be commended were Kevin Conroy, Steven Conroy, Paul Curley, Greg Downes, Joe Joyce, Tim Keane, and Kevin Rocha. The J.V.’s had a solid defensive unit backing their fine pitching staff. On the team were Peter Dandini, Jeff Duffy, Rob Julius, Jonn Mahan, Ed McFadden, Jim O’Connor, Chris Pandiscio, Dave Piermarini, Danny Potts, Ralph Rogers, Kenny Smith, Bill Walsh , and John Zanghi. Aquino School Superintendent Worcester Diocese Sister Joan Mulcahy Administrator Mr. William Norkaitis Principal Sister Lourdes O’Malley Assistant Principal As roots are all important in our lives so also with St. Bernard’s Central Catholic High School which first rooted back in 1929 with the laying of its cornerstone. It was built by the parishioners of St. Bernard’s parish spearheaded by the pastor, Rev. James J. Donnelly. As the school continued to grow, eight portable classrooms were added. Later these were replaced by the present four-story annex. Today St. Bernard’s is no longer a parish high school but diocesan and available to all pupils in the area. As you sink your roots deeper and deeper into good mother earth, St. Bernard’s C.C. High School, may God continue to make you fruitful with rich and abundant foliage! Although you have retired from the classroom, you still give your time and talent in completing this yearbook which you began to compile when we were freshmen. For four years, we have watched you, Sister, with the camera man ready to capture some memorable event in our daily life at St. Bernard’s—plays, dances, classroom candids, and athletic functions, which will bring back fond memories in future years. Thank you, dear Sister, for your dedication to duty and for your gentle voice and quiet manner which were an inspiration for us to live truly Christian lives. May God reward you for your many years of teaching with a happy retirement, so well deserved! Walter Carew was the head coach for St. Bernard’s, and Patrick Donnelly and Thomas Farineau the co-captains. The steady downpour contributed to injuries on both sides. Mark Celli and Alan Fontaine were hospitalized. Although the Red Raiders scored two touchdowns during the opening 20 minutes, the Bernardians totally dominated them in the second half, and began to move the ball. The Saints blew through Fitchburg’s front line and blocked a punt deep in Fitchbu rg territory. Dan Kennedy made the recovery. Rich Bagley and Fran Burns brought the ball down to the five-yard line. The Bernardian tough defense now became a strong wall and succeeded in making Fitchburg give up the ball; Dan Connolly making the recovery. Leo LeClair and Mark Maldonis pushed the ball down to Fitchburg’s 10-yard line. After a long Fitchburg punt, Jim Barassi returned the ball 27 yards down to the Fitchburg 11-yard line. Maldonis, LeClair, and Burns carried the ball to the Fitchburg seven-yard line. Unfortunately for St. Bernard’s, time ran out and they fell to rival Fitchburg by a 14-6 score. 119 120 CROSS COUNTRY Chris Borg Michael Breau Patrick Burns Jeffrey Caron Alan Feeney Thomas Foley James Gerry Paul Legere Sam Martin Michael McNabb Arthur Steffenberg CROSS COUNTRY Mary Beth Borg Mona Carpenter Margaret Groeninger Nancy Guartafierro Melanie Hohos Moira Keating Mary Beth Martin Kathleen McNabb Noreen Melucci Kathleen Micciche Patricia Micciche Joan Nowlin Erin O’Connell Patricia Romano Colleen Shannon Terri-Ann Shannon With a brand-new coach, Mr. Tim Duffy, and an enthusiastic surge of ice-power, the Bernardians started the 1980-81 season with a win over Nashoba, and ended being acclaimed the North Central Mass. Then FHS made it a quick tie, to be followed by the second goal due to Bernard’s skill. Again Fitchburg High tied but Dave Barksdale put the Saints ahead, 3-2. Co-captain, Jamie Rheault pumped the score up by adding a single goal, and his next scoring gave St. Bernard’s a 5-3 advantage. Co-captain Mark Celli put on the finishing t ouch with the 6th goal.
