BERNARDIAN Volume LIT Moments to Live By Four happy years of togetherness Of much friendly sharing and giving Will ever be for us a treasured time To cherish such moments to live by. Swift and sure has been the passage Of these fleeting, ephemeral hours. Quickly have our high school days Too soon come and gone with the wind. For us, too, the past has gone forever But it lives on in unforgettable memory. We live the present for the future ahead Grateful for fullness of days together. CONTENTS Moments Recalled Senior Candids Juniors ’81 Sophomores °82 Freshmen °83 Activities Faculty Senior Profiles Ads and Patrons Thinking back now on our first FROSH days We remember how we felt so terribly lost In a maze of endless halls and stairways, FROSH Struggling along with armloads of books, Lost in a world of big kids, books, lockers, FIRST STEPS Would we ever become like the “giant” seniors? The first frightening days over we gradually entered Into sports, cheerleading, and stage performances. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.—Lao-tse = Gone were the frosh days of fear and uncertainty, Now we were confident, unafraid, and sure footed, Cocksure and positive that our opinion was right, And as a class we just couldn’t stumble or fall. SOPH SURENESS God gave to some animals the speed of flight; to others, claws, or wings; but He has so disposed man that He, God Himself, is his strength. —John Chrysostom 10 x SOPH BASEBALL James Adams Joseph Balducci Thomas Cuddahy Paul Curley Sean Langen Stephen Loughlin John Quinn Edward Tarka Frank Zanghi SOFTBALL Melanie Burns Dona Dower Renee Forget Sherry McDermott Kathy McDonald Kathy Plumb TENNIS Karen Baker John DiGeronimo Cheryl Gagne Paul Grautski Daniel LeBlanc GOLF John Shea John Sciabarassi James Whittemore SOPH TRACK Maureen Martin Paul Legere Thomas Surrette Catherine Keating Maryanne Reynolds Robert Lomme Douglas Whittemore Laura Kent Paula Richard Through thick and thin of good times and bad, JUNIOR We held together and weathered the storms, Side by side we had steered our class bark, TROLS BANS ISLEN TESS Out of the reefs and rocks along our path. The worst sin toward our fellow creatures is not to hate them; but to be indifferent to them. —George Bernard Shaw 14 Not much from this great world I ask beyond the strength to do my task. It is enough that I may be on hand to see a blossoming tree And hear a songbird now and then, singing his hymns of joy to men. Let me be one whose courage springs from all the countless little things Of joy and beauty which abound whenever man may look around. Let me exult in peace or strife that I have had the gift of life. —Edgar Guest 15 THE SOUND OF MUSIC All-School Musical of °79 April 5, 6, and 7 Director: Janet Malatos Choreographer: Laurie Lynch Accompanist: Gail Healy Orchestra: Robert Healy Production: Mr. Nicastro Costumes: Sr. Mary Constance Programs: Sr. Cecile WE hean se FORO ee a mm WEUEOMeMS | Rake wg, In the “Sound of Music,” Cheryl Gagne was Maria. The Moth Abbess, played by Marie Plette, questions Maria’s potential as a nun and discusses the situation with three other nuns—Beth Garneau, Donna Infantino, and Almetha Ford. They decide that abbey life is not for Maria and send her as governess to the home of Captain Von Trapp, Paul Grautski. The Captain tries to run his home on a strict naval regime with the result that his seven children, played by Geralyn Slovenkai, Joseph Moriarty, Erin O’Connell, Daniel Richard, Kelly Reardon, Louise Beland, and Patricia Whitney are most difficult to handle. When Liesl, the oldest, slips out to meet Rolf, played by Thomas Reardon, she is forced to return through Maria’s window. This escapade is the beginning of friendly relations with Maria. When the Captain goes to Vienna to visit his fiancee, the Baroness, played by Lisa Berube, Maria wins the children over completely. Shortly after the Captain returns with the Baroness and Max Detweiler, protrayed by Matthew Gauvin, he realizes that it is not the Baroness he loves but Maria. The Von Trapp family later flee the country to safety and freedom when the Germans invade Austria. It takes you home. —Bede Jarrett — 38 About 400,000 pilgrims from across the hills and valleys of all New England and lower Canada came down to the sea, standing for hours in the rain for the pontifical Mass of Pope John Paul II on Boston Common, October 1, ’°79. Smiling wet faces, dazzled by the Holy Father’s message and magnetism, never wavered in a downpour, adding an element of sacrifice to the two-hour service. During the papal Mass John Paul turned to the younger generation and told them: “You are the future of the world and the day of tomorrow belongs to you.” 39 « Pope John Paul II in his talk to the United Nations on October 2, ’79, stressed the dangers of the arms race to future generations. “Are the children to receive the arms race from us as a necessary inheritance?” he asked. “How are we to explain this unbridled arms race? . . . Can our age still really believe that the breath-taking spiral of armaments is at the service of world peace?” es — - _ = —_——— eS. __aa On October 2, °79, at New York’s ‘Yankee Stadium,’ Pope John Paul II spoke of the United States reputation for generosity and said Americans should be “faithful to that tradition, in keeping with your vast possibilities and present responsibilities.” “The poor of the United States and of the world are your brothers and sisters in Christ,” he said. ‘You must never be content to leave them just the crumbs from your table . . . you must treat them like guests at your table.” Fleet-footed cafeteria moments All too short and unrepeated, A time when separated friends Come together to eat and talk. On Friday night, October 26, at the Homecoming dance, Michelle Comeau was crowned Queen with Donna Leger, Beth Julius, Rose Fortier, and Mary Curley as her Court. At the Homecoming game against Wachusett on the 27th, the class banners were judged; the selected winner being the Senior class with its “Cookie Monster.” The final event of the weekend was a Mass in the auditorium to which all were cordially welcomed. 131 1979 Varsity Football at St. Bernard’s High School opened its season with a new head coach, Walter Carew, a renowned veteran with outstanding successes to his credit and the recipient of the “Massachusetts Coach of the Year Award” in 1968. Assisting Mr. Carew were Robert Merrow and John Donnelly. The tri-captains were Jim Whittemore, Sean Langen, and Jim Jackart. The long-awaited opening game with the Lunenburg Knights ended in a disappointing loss, as did the home game with Hudson a week later. In the game with Clinton, the Gaels gave the Bernies no space even to breathe when they tallie d a score of 36-0. The second half of the season began with the light shining on the Harvard Streeters and a victory when they traveled to Athol to face the undefeated Red Raiders. The offense moved the ball well and scored the only touchdown of the day. Quarterback Fran Burns not only made the touchdown but also the two point conversion. Outstanding also were Whittemore and Langen. Tim Flynn had a big interception late in the fourth quarter. In the Homecoming game with Wachusett, the Saints lost to the Mountaineers, 14-0, despite a strong defensive showing. Frank Zanghi had a strong day on defense while Rick Kowesky made a bright offensive showing. When Bartlett, a highly favored team, came to the Bowl, it was an all-out war. Mike Sullivan had two key interceptions, one setting up a touchdown, the other with 24 seconds left. Rob Boissoneau made a terrific one-handed interception while John Quinn set up a touchdown with an interception on the Bartlett 33. Captain Jackart came up with a terrific catch to put the Bernardians in scoring territory. The final score showed SBHS on top, 12-6. Offensively, the Harvard Streeters were led by Quinn at quarterback; Kowesky, Mike Mobley, and Whittemore in the” backfield. The line consisted of center, Steve Marcoulier; guards, Pat Donnelly and Mike Sullivan; tackles, Zanghi and Jeff Duffy; Jackhart and Tom Fantozzi manned the end position. Defensively, the Saints had depth and experience with Langen at] nose guard; Whittemore, Zanghi, Duffy, Brian Whitney, and Tom Dahart as eligible tackles; Jackhart, Fantozzi, Tom Farineau, Tim Grammel, and Kevin Rautio as the defensive ends. The linebackers were Donnelly, Sullivan, Tom Reardon, and Leo LeClair. On defensive backfield were Quinn, Mobley, Rob Boissoneau, Bill Hannigan, Kevin Conroy, and Jim Barassi. St. Bernard’s High School started its 1979-80 hockey season with a crop of inexperienced players. As the season wore on, the Bernies gained more and more skating acumen under Coach Art Lindberg. The peak came when the Saints outskated Nashoba, 5-2, on Mark Celli’s two goals and two assists. On February 9, the Saints defeated a very tough Lunenburg team 7-5. Ron Smith started the Bernie onslaught with his first of three scores and Celli tied it up at 2-2. After the Blue Knights were on top, the Harvard Streeters answered with three tallies to grab a 5-3 advantage going into the final period. Smith tied the count at 3-3 less than a minute after Lunenburg tied it up. Jamie Rheault made it 4-3 and Celli upped it to 5-3 in the final minute of the period. Lunenburg got it back to 5-4 but Smith and Celli scored back-to-back goals to put the Bernardians in complete control. Mark Thompson made 21 saves for the Bernie win. With a 13-6 record, the Bernardians enter into District competitio with confidence. The Bernardian squad is led by seniors Jeff LaClair, Bill LeBlanc, Joe Madonia, Joe Moriarty, Ron Smith, and Mark Thompson. Th Juniors are Kevin Carey, Mark Celli, Bob Fitzgerald, Jamie Rheault; Sophomores—David Barksdale, Jack Bernard, Craig Cormier, Mat Richards; Freshmen—Ron Arsenault, Joe Bedard, Jim Reynolds, Robert Richards, Joe Tusia. On the Junior Varsity team, coached by John Donnelly, are Neil Buckley, Chris Caisse, Tim Conry, Mike Cuddahy, Robert Denault, Brian Doheny, Brian Flynn, Tom Hill, Bill McKay, Chris Pandiscio, David Rampello, Scott Rheault, Bob Saccone. Coached by Bob Bourque and led by co-captains Steve Loughlin and Jim Whittemore, SBHS varsity basketball team opened its season with an impressive win over St. Mary’s of Worcester. It was three more games before the Bernies were again victorious with a win in the Lunenburg tournament. In the victory over Notre Dame, the Saints showed great stamina after having lost previous games to St. John’s and Leominster. The highlight of the season came when the Bernie hoopsters defeated Gardner 83-51 at the first home game played in the new Activity Center on February 15. This game also broke an eight-game series of losses for SBHS, ending the season with a 4-13 record. Displaying talent, dedication, aggressiveness, and quickness were seniors Joseph Carbone, Steven Loughlin, John Sciabarrasi, Edward Tarka, James Whittemore; Juniors—Thomas Allain, Richard Bagley, John O’Donnell, David Piermarini; Sophomores—Chris Comeau, John Driscoll, Michael Devarenne. Now boasting a 9-2 record, and directed by Coach Jim Burns, the JV Basketball team is intent on achieving a 16-2 record. On the team are Nick Bianchini, Jim Culnane, Marc Cunningham, Peter Dandini, Mike Devarenne, Greg Downes, Bruce Dufour, John Garneau, Tim Keane, Marty Lessard, and John Young. 137 SBHS Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team established a 7-9 record for the 1979-80 season. Sherry McDermott was awarded the MVP award at the Lunenburg Tournament which the Bernie girls swept for the third straight year. Coach Nick Nicastro labeled the game with Notre Dame Academy as the best of the year. The Saints got outstanding performances from co-captain Melanie Burns, Karen DiNardo and Anne Farnsworth. Sherry McDermott, co-captain, was outstanding defensively and 138 Beth Julius gave a big lift at the start with three quick! hoops. . A major highlight of the season was the final game! in the old school gym when the girls pulled off their| first victory over St. Peter-Marian in four years. Another! highpoint included the first varsity victory for St. Bernard’s in the new Activity Center over neighboring-| rival Leominster.
