Presenting To have and to hold Days of blue and Days of gold. in the BERNARDIAN Volume LI MT. ST. MARY’S CONVENT 124 SUMMER ST., FiTc IBURG, MASS. The Senior Class St. Bernard’s High School Fitchburg, Massachusetts TO HAVE AND TO HOLD DAYS OF BLUE AND DAYS OF GOLD May this 1979 BERNARDIAN be for us a storehouse of memo- ries, Remembrances of our four happy years of high school together, Memories always to have and possess as one’s very dear own, To hold on to and retain in loving affection for ever and ever, Not for a day, not for a year, but as long as life shall last. True to life, every day was not a day of gold and sunshine, With everything smoothly and successfully going our way, Rather, interspersed here and there were the days of blue, When in spite of our best efforts everything went wrong, Not turning out to be the big success we had dreamed of. But those days of blue we will cherish, too, and remember. Looking back now, we see that everything was for our good, Even the days of blue, of failure, and of disappointments. CONTENTS . The Green Years . Seniors unposed . Faculty . Seniors posed . Activities . Juniors, ’80 . Sophomores, ’81 Freshmen, 782 . Ads and patrons Now having achieved and reached the vantage point of senior year, We look back and survey the progress we have made step by step, Beginning with those first momentous days when we were freshmen Taking our first uncertain steps on our high school career. In spite of our forced air of assurance and bold self-reliance, We were awed and inwardly fearful of the mighty, powerful senior. THE FIRST — But little by little we came out of our shells and moved about GREEN YEAR _ Entering into class and school activities full of life and vigor. Peace is an inner harmony... Only whole things flourish. A machine lacking oil or with a part missing is hardly ‘at peace.’ It squeaks or grinds or self-destructs or does not run at all. A human person who lacks love or honesty or purity or justice is necessarily a disordered human being. He cannot have inner peace because he is missing ‘parts.’ —Thomas Dubay Most of the shadows of this life are caused by standing in one’s own sunshine. —Emerson Do not anticipate trouble, or worry about what may never happen. Keep in the sunlight. —Franklin Mary... is awoman and a mother; and like all mothers, she has a sense for the uniqueness of each person. She has an instinct for what is concrete, practical, and in touch with life. An Arab proverb runs, “Men see the forest, women see the trees and their leaves.” In the same way, Mary treats each Christian as an individual. —Cardinal Suenens My life is but a weaving between my God and me; I may not choose the colors, He knows what they should be; For He can view the pattern upon the upper side, é on this, the underside. Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true. —Cardinal Suenens Peant tne. 1 A¢ Love is patient, love is kind. Love is not jealous, it does not put on airs, it is not snobbish. Love is never rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not prone to anger, neither does it brood over injuries. Love does not rejoice in what is wrong but rejoices with the truth. There is no limit to love’s for- bearance, to its trust, its hope, its power to endure. —Paul, Corinthians I, 13:4-7 That we as a class were emerging from the greening stage and entering into the budding period was evidenced by the participation of 100 sophomores in the Language Fair of ’76. Eight sophomores were dance directors: Tina Boucher, Joanne Butler, Lisa Caravella, Linda Cormier, Donna Forget, Pamela Gagnon, Jane Martin, Rose- mary Mazzaferro. Even though it is only September, freshmen have already gotten into the swing of things and are beginning to feel at home and no longer lost or bewildered. Down in the gym with Mr. Merrow, a group of freshman girls are learning to play tennis using the best techniques and skills. Pca 6 Se ay eee gta 4 y In the cafeteria freshmen are glad that they all come together at the same time not only for eating purposes but for sociability. By this time, freshmen know all the ropes—where to get this and where to get that, how to do this and how @ do that. SO Freshmen soon familiarized themselves with the cafeteria personnel: first with Mrs. Rodier and then with her staff— Irs. Andrews, Mrs. Corbe tt, Mrs. Craigen, Mrs. Demers, Mrs. Henault, Mrs. Keating, and Mrs. Moison. The custodians, Mr. Delphia and Mr. Ruel, also became familiar figures as they moved about the cafeteria. His compassion, concern, honesty, humility, and openness continued to be strengthened by his years at Holy Cross College, then at Rome, and later at the Catholic “Unive rsity of America. 1928 ‘PURPLE PATCHER’ COLLEGE YEARBOOK WRITEUP: Bernard Joseph Flanagan. ..a real scholar . . . industrious, energetic, broadminded . strong in opinion... consistent in his endeavors, affable of disposition . . . true in his friendships. DAYS OF BLUE AND DAYS OF GOLD Bishop Flanagan was installed as bishop of our diocese on September 24, 1959. Below is the picture of the Bishop as he came to us. Contrasted with his picture as of today, he, too, has not had all days of gold. But strengthened by his faith, the Bishop has carried on with courage and hope, as is evidenced by these words of his: Despite all the evil in the world around us, despite the problems we face in these trying times ... faith prompts us to rejoice. EXCERPTS EXPRESSING THE BISHOP’S STANCE ON ISSUES OF THE °70’s: The right to work, to useful employment, just wages and decent working conditions, is a ane p human need providing a vital sense of worth that gives meaning and satisfaction to human life. Human life is a precious gift of God and any society true to its trust must protect and sustain it at every slage of its existence. The expansion of nuclear power for military use is wrong, even when proposed under the aegis of “needed defense.” If we are consuming more of our resources than needed while others are deprived of their basic rights ... then we are creating an immoral and sinful situation which justice requires that we remedy. The way of violence is wrong—it only breeds more violence. Absolute freedom does not and, indeed, cannot exist. Freedom to act in human society... must be reasonably circumscribed by the legitimate rights of others. 83 ACTIVITIES Donna Le Michell Jane McBride sa Moriarty There lra Quellett Sal ra cas 3 J Linda Cormier was crowned Homecoming Queen by football captain, Michael Manago at the October 20 pep rally. May this 1979 BERNARDIAN always be a precious memory book, A book to have and to hold, to cherish and to keep close. We know that the days ahead will not all be days of gold, With skies always blue and our paths strewn with flowers. But even when skies are overcast and our spirits droop, We can be sure that God is with us in His undying love, Giving us the strength and courage we need for the day, Lighting our pathway and with us every step of the way.
