AT BIGHT BERNARDIAN Volume L St. Bernard’s High School Fitchburg, Massachusetts “To live, to err, to fall, to triumph, to recreate life out of lifemer —James Joyce FOR THE FIFTIETH TIME For the fiftieth time in our alma mater’s history, A senior class launches forth on a great venture— The BERNARDIAN of ’78, honored to be the fiftieth. Now in retrospect we turn back to the first annual When with true pioneering spirit, the 29’ers first Opened up the way making it easier for the rest of us. And so we have carried on during these fifty years, Fifty years it may be of errors, falls, and triumphs, But always trying to make our BERNARDIAN really live, Constantly striving “to recreate life out of life.” Contents I. A Review II. Seniors of ’78 III. Faculty IV. Senior Portraits V. Activities VI. Juniors of ’79 VII. Sophomores of ‘80 VIII. Freshmen of ’81 IX. Supporters Taking a backward look and seeing ourselves as we used to be, We must admit we have certainly changed in ways more than one. As freshmen we still had that childlike, grammar-school look In spite of our efforts to appear grown up and worldly wise. AS WE USED TO BE Demoted and at the bottom of the ladder was not easy for us, IN FRESHMAN DAYS We who in grammar school had been the seniors and on the top. If | can stop one heart from breaking I shall not live in vain; If I can ease one life the aching, Or cool one pain, Or help one fainting robin Unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain. —Emily Dickinson Love is an inner, invisible reality. But love shows itself in action. This is what Jesus meant when he said that by our living of his new love, all men know that we are his disciples. We love our brother or sister with this new love when our caring for them does not depend on whether we get something in return. —Thomas Dubay, S.M. Manliness consists not in bluff, bravado, or lordliness. It consists in daring to do the right and facing consequences .. . It consists in deeds, not in words... —Mahatma Gandhi If you are crushed by a terrible burden of sin; if you feel yourself sinking into an abyss of sadness, a whirlpool of despair, think upon MARY. Following her, you will not stray; invoking her, you will never lose hope; think- ing of her, you will make no mistake; with her help you will win the victory. —St. Bernard ne 3 os we, | tthe S Ld a We can easily manage, if we will only take each day, the burden ae pointed for it. But the load will be too heavy for us if we carry yester- day’s burden over again today, and then add the burden of the morrow to the weight, before we are required to bear it. —John Newton AS WE WERE AS SOPHOMORES Looking at ourselves now as sophs, we do look a bit more grownup. We also felt more important having our own class of- ficers: Kelly McDonald, Sharon McCloskey, Patricia Croteau, Pamela Bartoni, and Donna Richard. A friend is one who knows everything about you and still accepts you. —St. Augustine iene i i e § , aia ea ny Our sophomore class play, THE LAST OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, was directed by Miss Jackson, with David Divis at the lights, and with the following cast: SHENOCK HO MMedaee tea Gregory Gaudet Dr. Watson Michael Belliveau Paula Angelini Lady Dimtwiddle Marie Eisner Mystery Lady Detective el tte « - Life is made up, not of great sacrifices or duties, but of little things—smiles and kindnesses and small obligations. Crossroads are commonplace—we are free to choose—the road we take does make all the difference. HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING the all-school musical of 76. Robert Healy was the director and DeDe Guercio, the choreographer. Sophomores of ‘78 were well represented appearing in leading roles, dances, and as executives and secretaries. bD AS SELF-RELIANT JUNIORS Seeing ourselves as Juniors, we sure have that look of self assurance and poise with no inferiority complexes. We felt real grownup and ably ready to cope with a JSR and all class projects under the leadership of our class of- ficers—Timothy Babineau, Sharon McCloskey, Patricia Croteau, Pamela Bartoni, and Donna Richard. Every human being craves to be accepted, accepted for what he is .. . A life without acceptance is a life in which a most basic human need goes unfulfilled. Acceptance means that the people with whom I live give me a feeling of self-respect, a feeling that Iam worthwhile. When a person is loved for what he ts and not for what he does, then he becomes an irreplaceable personality. I am accepted by God as I am—as I am, and not as I should be. —Peter van Breeman 18 The person of hope must be one who has the ability to trust: risking all, when security is so inviting; plunging into the unknown future; saying yes, before consequences are carefully spelled out. ‘Tis not the softer things of life, Which stimulate man’s will to strive, But bleak adversity and strife Do most to keep man’s will alive, O’er rose-strewn paths the weaklings creep But brave hearts dare to climb the steep! —L. E. Thayer God has not promised skies always blue, Flower-strewn pathways all our lives through God has not promised sun without rain, Joy without sorrow, peace without pain. But God has promised strength for the day, Rest for the laborer, light for the way, Grace for the trials, help from above, Unfailing sympathy, undying love. People still find a need for something beyond themselves after they do the best they can and then look honestly into the depth of their lives. Trying to ignore this with a stiff upper lip does not help them become mature. They become truly mature as they first develop all the capacities they have, recognizing both failures and weaknesses, and then turn to God for further wisdom and understand- ing and power. —Morton Kelsey Juniors of ’78 in the Musical of ’77 MAME directed by Robert Healy ee Production Michael Breton Richard Burnell Lisa Cassinari Cathy Ciaschini Donna Cormier Kathleen Crall David Divis Paul Gamache Shelly Gould Stanley Howe Lori Hughes Sean Kraemar Charles McNamara Susan Miller Joan Petrullo Brian Robideau Lori Rocheleau Daniel Rodriquenz Patricia Scanlon JoAnne Taitano John Toomey Robert Vorse Robert Walsh James Wixon Lawrence Yovino Gregory Gaudet BPS ethic wtb eg ae ae Cast Michael Belliveau Marie Eisner Paul Gagne Celeste LeBlanc Sharon McCloskey Kelly McDonald George McManus Donna Moriarty Kristine Pancare Joanne Quinn Jean Ray Joseph Ritzo Dancers Paula Angelini Timothy Babineau Holly Barber Donald Bolling Susan D’Annolfo Patricia Keating Celeste LeBlanc Kelly McDonald George McManus Daniel Smith Thomas Carroll Friends Jane Bagley Karen Buckley Lisa Conroy Patricia Croteau Theresa DiPietro Mary Ellen Eilerman Paula Fagan Susan Gallagher Barbara Gilmartin Marcia Ginnity Kim Mullaney Barbara Patient Lisa Putnam Lori Rocheleau Kim Rowe Barbara Surrette Kathleen Whitney A big event during Senior week in June of ’77 was the annual farewell given by the juniors to the seniors. Our thanks to Mrs. Rodier and her staff: Mrs. Angela Andrews Mrs. Helen Corbett Mrs. Ruth Craigen Mrs. Dorothy Henault Mrs. Doris LeBlanc Mrs. Norma Karkett Mrs. Vivian Percival Fifty years ago the school boasted no such fine cafeteria as of today. No hot lunch was pro- vided. Pupils generally brought a sandwich or two from home and bought milk, crackers, pastry, candy, and ice cream at the lunch coun- ters. The lunchroom for the girls was located in what is now the typing room; that for the boys in space now occupied by the art room. Contributing also to the smooth running of the cafeteria are the custodians, Mr. Delphia and Mr. Ruel. 44 4g HOMOGENITID PASTEURIZED foip™ MILK HOMOCENNZED : +4 zy one met evs ee : PASTE ZED SRERIZ ES WM. The success of the two performances was largely due not only to the variety of dances but to the well-trained dancers, coached by student choreographers. Three of these dance directors of ‘77 were Paula Angelini, Lynn Celli, and Susan Miller. Paula, who has been dancing since she was six and who has given four years to directing Language Fair groups, did a tremendous job in this year’s performance. In the “Dance Through the Ages” segment, of close to 100 senior boys and girls, Paula drilled and drilled, rehearsal after rehearsal, on such dances as the Charleston, the Polka, Jitterbug, Rock ’n Roll, Mexican Hat dance. For most of the seniors this grand finale would be the last performance on SBHS stage. Approximately 150 couples attended this gala affair with up- perclassmen in the majority. The musical entertainment was provided by Shimmer. The chairmen were David Bashaw and Jane Bagley. Fifty years ago, the class of ’29 had no Christmas dance, nor did any of the classes during the 30’s and the 40’s. The class of ’50 felt that it should go down in school history for its noteworthy achievement—the first school dance in over 10 years. When permission was finally given for a Christmas dance, the seniors had to agree that it would be an informal affair but with the boys in suit coats and ties and no sweaters nor bobby sox for the girls. It was to be a strictly school affair with no out- siders. After the dance, all were to go directly home. The 400 Bernies who attended had a most enjoyable evening as they danced the fox trot, jitterbug, rhumba, polka, waltz, and Virginia reel. The seniors of 50 next got permission to plan their own Senior Prom. The Alumni Association has been conducting a prom for the seniors. Injuries multiplied resulting in the loss of key members from the starting and defen- sive lineups. Sunday, October 23, was a memorable day when the Bernies thumped opponent, St. Peter’s of Worcester, by a 21-7 score. The entire team put in a fine performance. Kelly McDonald and Don Benoit led the offense and defensemen, Tom Carroll and Don Bolling were out- standing as well as Ed Mazzaferro and Al Piermarini. On a rain-soaked field, the Saints defeated Lunenburg 15-14. Bad weather and bad breaks doomed SBHS to a 18-0 win for Hudson. Unbeaten Worcester South spoiled the festive homecoming game by posting a 23-3 victory over the Harvard Streeters. | The spunky effort and hard hitting fray of the Saints was eventually tilted when the Gaels of Clinton ran up. the yards and scored. Athol scored early in the game and held on to beat SBHS by a 6-0 score. | In the game with powerful Cardinal Spellman of) Brockton, the Saints scored on one of the most exciting plays of the season with Benoit and McDonald in ac- tion. But the Cardinals ended by posting a hard-earned! 23-14 victory. 1 St. Bernard’s ended its ten-game schedule with a 3-7) record at the close of its season. Reger eet ores ont ENIOR GRIDSTERS nald Bolling Thomas Carroll Mark Conroy David Divis John Doucette John Grady David Higgins Sean Kraemar Patrick Leary Edward Mazzaferro Kelly McDonald Alan Piermarini Brian Robideau Tite oes, Congratulations are certainly in order for Coach Arthur Lindberg and his impressive Saints. An outstanding record of 15-1 has been compiled over the season so far, commanding the respect of all the area teams. The Harvard Streeters, led by returning seniors—captain Mike Breton and teammates—Bob Vorse, Tom Montesion, and Paul LaFosse, opened up the 1977-78 season by edging Gardner, 4-3. St. Bernard’s experienced its first and last setback when Leominster’s Blue Devils upset the Bernies, 1-6. John Celli picked up the lone St. Ber- nard’s score, averting a shutout late in the second period. However, the Saints later traveled back to soundly trounce Leominster, 5-2. Bill Morrissey and John Celli each lit the lamp twice for SBHS while John Keating tipped the fifth one in the Blue Devil net. The Bernardians found themselves in a desperate situation with the loss of goal tender Mike Gaudet who was sidelined earlier in the season due to a leg injury. Bill, the “Ace”, LeBlanc has taken his place and has been doing a superlative job tending the Bernie net. Providing a big boost for the Harvard Street attack is the Celli- Keating-Montesion line which has accounted for much of the Bernie’s success. This year the Blue and Gold is going with two sets of defense- men, Paul LaFosse and Dennis Hamel, spelled by Mike Breton and Joe Moriarty. Tom Leone and Tom Padavano have made an effective pair of linemates and have been working together well. Bob Montolio | and Mark Shannon, this year’s big surprises, have been seeing regular action. The powerhouse St. Bernard’s team went on for six consecutive wins when it again faced the Blue Knights of Lunenburg. Tom Monte- |} sion lit the lamp twice for the Harvard Streeters when Lunenburg took i a quick lead. Celli, Montolio, and Shannon all scored to wrap up a 5-2) victory putting them in sole possession of first place. The Bernie’s then} went on to crush Fitchburg, Notre Dame, Hudson Catholic, and Mur- dock high schools. High hopes are riding on the Harvard Street ice- men as they defend their Central-Western Massachusetts, Division II Championship. SENIOR ICEMEN Michael Breton Paul LaFosse Thomas Montesion Robert Vorse JUNIORS Thomas Brideau John Celli Michael Gaudet Dennis Hamel John Keating Thomas Leone Robert Montolio William Morrissey Thomas Padovano Mark Shannon SOPHOMORES William LeBlanc Jeffrey LeClair Joseph Madonia Joseph Moriarty Ronald Smith FRESHMAN James Rheault Varsity Basketball started its 1977-78 season with a new coach— Bob Bourque, a Bernardian, and a former player of the old powerhouse teams that went to the Garden in 1967 and 1969. He was fortunate in having a team that made up for its height disadvantage with grit, quickness, and aggressiveness. On the squad were seniors David Bashaw, Thomas Carroll, Michael Condon, Paul Hutchinson, David Loughlin, Kelly McDonald, and Edward Mazzaferro. Junior players were Donald Benoit, Daniel Gamache, Kevin Ouellette, and Peter Slattery; sophomore, Steven Loughlin. After losing their first three games to St. Mary’s, Wachusett Regional, and Holy Name, St. Bernard’s traveled to Clinton to give Coach Bourque an early Christmas present, when the Bernies crushed the Gaels by 30 points. Outstanding were Pete Slattery, Ed Mazzafer- ro, Paul Hutchinson, and Steve Loughlin. This victory gave the Saints the needed momentum as they entered the Lunenburg tournament. = — = ea 146 In the first round SBHS defeated Leominster High. Two nights later the Harvard Streeters capped the tourney by dealing undefeated Lunenburg its first loss. Pete Slattery was the big gun and was named the Most Valuable Player, receiving the MVP trophy. The Bernies, however, slipped to powerful St. John’s and to Leominster. But the tide changed quickly with two more consecutive wins over Gardner and Notre Dame, with Benoit and Slattery team- ing up for 36 against the Crusaders. The improved Saints were involved ina few close battles. First, the St. Peter’s tilt with Slattery’s 22 and McDonald’s 15 nearly shocking the taller Guardians. The first quarter of the game with Fitchburg High saw hopes of a Harvard Street upset, but that went down the drain. The Blue and Gold had a wild high-scoring affair against St. Peter-Marian, 83-77, the highest scoring game in some time. To date, the Bernardians’ record is five wins against six losses. Junior Varsity Basketball, from beginning to end, played a very ex- citing brand of basketball, inspired and influenced by its new coach, David Benoit. Playing on the team were juniors, Brian Morin and Dean Smith; and sophomores, Jim Adams, Jim Bilotta, Steve Boucher, Joe Carbone, Steve Conroy, Charles Farinelli, John Sciabarrasi, Tom ‘Surrette, and Jim Whittemore. __ The Bernies won eight of its first nine games. They had no difficulty over St. Mary’s, Notre Dame, and Gardner. They also had their share of close battles with Clinton, Wachusett, and Holy Name along witha | | pair of stunning upsets over St. Peter-Marian and St. John’s. Then a decline set in with losses to Leominster, Holy Name, St. John’s, and Fitchburg. They had to bite the bullet a little, losing to Leominster on a steal with 4 seconds left; Wachusett, by 2; St. Peter- Marian by 3 ina wild one; and Fitchburg, by 6, ina game thatsaw the Bernardians leading throughout much of the first half. The future holds many promises with returning players comple- mented by small but equally strong Freshmen. Coach Benoit has his team and himself established as strong contenders in the area. 147 Hard work and dedication are key words tor the Girls’ Varsity Basketball team coached by Mr. Nicastro. This year’s team is young consisting of one senior, Mar y Beth Buckley; seven juniors, Brigit Bergeron, Theresa Craite, Simone Couture, Kelly Cuddahy, Pamela Legere, Rose Mazzaferro, Ellen Ray; two sophomores, Melanie Burns, Kathy McDonald; and freshman, Beth Julius. Although the team lacks the height and experience of previous years, their determined spirit gives them the drive to win. In the victory over Clinton, high scorers were Kelly Cuddahy, Brigit Bergeron, and Melanie Burns. The varsity team was the winner of the Lunenburg Invitational Tournament held for the first time for the girls. St. Bernard's beat Leominster in the first round, 61-60, on a free throw in the final seconds. In the finals they defeated Lununberg, 62-55. Melanie Burns was voted the Most Valuable Player. Unfortunate injuries to girls Cuddahy, Mazzaferro, and Leger ac- counted for the losses that followed. But the team soon came back and was successful against Notre Dame Academy and Fitchburg High, and also played an excellent game against Gardner although not emerging with a victory. With two more games to play, the team has a record of 8 wins and 8 © losses. The Girls’ Junior Varsity team under the coaching of Mrs. Garofoli has had a very successful season so far with an 8 and 3 record. The | team opened up their season at Clinton with a 41-0 victory. The next team to beat was North Middlesex with Donna Dower, Paula Zar- rella, and Sherry McDermott playing an excellent defensive game. Though a loss was taken against Holy Name, the girls played a tough game. Laura Kent was high scorer. A third loss was with a tough Wachusett team. But after their losses, the girls bounded back with victories over Leominster and Notre Dame Academy. Mona Morock, Kathy Reynolds, and Mary Hebert played well offensively. In the victory game against Fitchburg, Megan Havey had a good game for rebounds. In the closely-won game with St. Peter-Marian, Jackie Skehan contributed the winning two points. Renee’ Forget and Kathy McNabb were high scorers. Charlotte Arsenault played an excellent game. a i a | 150 The 1978 BERNARDIAN Our 50th Yearbook Co-editors Michael Belliveau Marcia L’Ecuyer Sports editors Robert Anderson Mary Beth Buckley Robert Walsh The Staff Kathleen Crall Diane Landry Joan Petrullo Susan Gallagher Roberta Hagan Sandra McGregor Anne-Marie Dahart ' Susan Pochini Jane Bagley Mary Beth Frank Donna Moriarty Mary Ellen Eilerman Paula Angelini Michelle LeBlanc Colleen Murphy Lynn Celli Joanne Quinn Patricia Croteau David Bashaw Mark Chester Denise Gauvin Linda Halstead Lori Rocheleau Rhonda Cormier George McManus Sharon McCloskey Kristine Pancare Donna Richard Joseph Ritzo Edward Mazzaferro Contributors Kathleen Whitney Shelly Gould Cindy Larocque Ann St. Jean Pamela Bartoni Lynn Landry Celeste LeBlanc Kathy Marotta Renee Isabelle Kelly McDonald Theresa DiPietro Susan D’Annolfo Suzan Miller Kathy O’Malley Patricia Mullaney THE 1978 BERNARDIAN As our yearbook comes to an end we now find ourselves In the midst of winter with drifts of snow heaped high, The aftermath of a blizzard—“The Worst in History,”— Snow whirling wildly, driven by hurricane-force winds, With no buses or any other means of getting to school, Days of cancellations of appointments and activities. The class of ’38 very likely recalls its calamitous year, When a disastrous hurricane struck with violent ferocity; When a mighty willow tree which for years had cast it’s Shadow, in late afternoon, on the west wall of the school, Now lay flattened on the ground, uprooted and lifeless. But God wills that life should go on, and so it happens. In this case, a frail, little sapling, bent and battered, But made stronger by the storm, lifted up it’s tiny head, And continued to grow, year by year, for four decades, Gigantic today as its mother willow was in her prime. And so it is with us today with snow loathe to leave us, For deep under this wintry blanket, cold and forbidding, In a small garden plot, sheltered close to the building, Crocuses are patiently waiting for the longed-for moment When they can poke their green noses up out of the earth, Brave and daring, through the remaining patches of snow.
