THE SENIORS OF 1977 present AS THE YEARS TURN TO GOLD in the BERNARDIAN Volume XLIX Xo oo 1927 photo by Loring St. Bernard’s High School Fitchburg, Massachusetts AS THE YEARS TURN TO GOLD The years have turned golden for our alma mater, Perched half way up the slope on Harvard Street. For fifty years she had held herself erect and tall, Not only during the good days of sunshine and glory, But through dark days of depression, war, and storm. Like the tiny grains of fine sand in the hourglass, Slipping slowly and quietly, unnoticed but surely, So the fifty years have come and gone all too fast. But these fifty years do not mark the end for SBHS Looking ahead to fifty more years of fruitful toil Blessed by God and trusting in His Fatherly Care. Contents Recollections Senior Candids Faculty ‘77 Portraitures Activities Juniors of ’78 Freshmen of ’80 Ads and Patrons Come with us now and we will walk hand in hand Down the lanes of memory recalling days of yore, And see again the old familiar faces and places FRESHMAN DAYS That were so dear to us when we were the FROSH. N Varied may have been our reasons for becoming a BERNIE And choosing St. Bernard’s to other schools in the area. For most of us who had looked forward to the opening day, No doubts entered our minds that it was here we belonged, So we merrily pitched our tents for we had come to stay. Others may have been uncertain about the decision made Wanting to keep with old friends in their chosen school. But regardless of our feelings and fears, here we were A class in the making needing the support of one and all. In the freshman play, GOOD-BYE TO THE CLOWN, Linda Hagerman was the little girl, who in im- agination has a fun-loving clown, Michael Macchione, for a playmate. The part of the mother was played by Marcy Foley; the uncle, Thomas Creed; the school principal, Michael Gaudet; and the teacher, Bridget Femino. Miss Martha Campbell directed the play. The stage assistants were Stephanie Bilotta, Deborah Gariepy, Kathleen O'Malley, and Mary Beth Rogers. = oe = peat i Soa Seer, Se ee tn = es Se ee ....When you feel yourself tossed about on the stormy waters of life, and ex- posed to all its violence, turn not your eyes away from this bright Star! When temptation sweeps down upon you and your ship is drifting to the rocks, look up at the Star—cry out to MARY! —St. Bernard When you are discouraged because you are in a valley, remember that every valley reaches up to the hills. If you wish to grow, spend your time in the com- pany of those who see above the clouds. When we fill our hours with regrets over the failures of yesterday, and with the worries of tomorrow, we have no today in which to be thankful. —Henry Ward Beecher What a man s contributes much more to his life than what he lias. What a man is in himself, what accompanies him when he is alone, what no one can give him or take away, is obviously more essential to him than everything he has in the way of possessions, or even what he may be in the eyes of the world. —Arthur Schopennauer ®°o oseee8 e? But we will never admit that we were ‘““Sophomoric’’— Immature and shallow, bombastic and superficial. CHEER Mr. Delphia and Mr. Ruel also help to keep things running smoothly in the cafeteria. The ancient Israelites had one exodus from Egypt but St. Bernard’s High had two in one morning. The first happened when the fire alarm sounded and we had to be evacuated in record-breaking time. The second occurred about an hour later when over the intercom came the command that all must leave the A DOUBLE _ building at once. No reason was given but we knew it must be a bomb scare. So we hurried outside again grate EXODUS ful that the day was warm and sunny. The Queen was Mary Belli and in her court were Lisa LeBlanc, Julie Donelle, Linda Halstead, and Theresa Moriarty. The parade to the Bowl was led by the Kingsmen Marching Band. Then came the cheerleaders, the class floats, and a motor- cade. The Sophomore float won the Plaque. SS aw Fy . , ae — ¥ Pr « Pay OF ‘s y es The Bernardians under head coach, Robert Day, opened their 1976 football season with an 8-6 victory over Lunen- burg. Dave Guillette returned the opening kick 35 yards. Before the end of the first half, John Donnelly went for the pass thrown by Dave Whitney, placing six on the board. The final few minutes was a struggle but Donnelly’s recep- tion brought victory. Despite the efforts of the Bernies, the Hudson Hawks man- aged to break loose in the final quarter and win a 6-0 victory over the Saints. In the first half of the game with Worcester South, Whitney threw a pass to Shaver that was good for six. Then Guillette added the conversion points and an 8-0 victory for St. Bernard’s. The Saints score came early in the rain-swept contest with the Gaels of Clinton when captain Donnelly responded with an early six-point run. The defenses of both teams bat- tled to the end, giving the Bernies a 6-0 win. Athol never quit even after Donnelly rumbled 18 yards for a touchdown and 21-8 advantage. The game ended 28-21 in Athol’s favor. Captain Donnelly got the Saints started on a 65-pay dirt a march late in the first period in the Homecoming game with St. Peter’s-Marian. Later he took an option pitch from Whitney and with good blocking from Zarrella slammed over St. Peter’s defenders at the goal line giving SBHS a 6-0 lead. In the second period, Donnelly scored for the extra point and a 14-0 edge. The final score was 14-6, St. Bernard’s first victory over St. Peter’s in seven years. Cardinal Spellman scored the only touchdown early in the game and held on for the win, 7-0, against the Harvard Streeters. | SBHS squad faced Marian of Framingham getting on the : scoreboard in the second quarter when Whitney fired a 40- yard scoring strike to Haverty. Mazzaferro booted the extra point making it 7-0. On their next possession, Whitney con- nected with Guillette for a 39-yard pass to pay dirt. In the second half, the Saints scored twice more on a Donnelly run and a Whitney to Petella pass for a 28-14 victory. The Bernardians shocked previously unbeaten Bartlett, 6- 0. Donnelly provided the margin of victory late in the first half. Winning its final game against Notre Dame, St. Ber- nard’s now had a 7 and 3 record, the best since 1971. ; 1977 GRIDSTERS Larry Badagliacca David Guillette Anthony Mangiacotti Michael Shaver Michael Boivin Robert Halstead John Melanson David Whitney John Donnelly, Cpt. Seniors returning to the squad were tri-captains—Mark Brousseau, John Donnelly, and Thomas Morrissey—Patrick Cronin, Robert DiTomasso, and Kevin McInerney. The game with Nashoba was an upset for the Bernies, 5 to 3. Determined to redeem themselves in their next game, Leominster, the Saints, pumped home 11 goals and trounced the Blue Devils, 11 to 2, in spite of the fact that they had never beaten them in five seasons of play. Continuing to keep th eir streak hot, the Harvard Streeters pum- meled Gardner, 12-1. Mike Gaudet did a superb job letting no goals by him. Both of them dreamed a dream and then had the faith and courage to face all the risks entailed in bringing that dream to fulfillment. Back in the 1920's, Father James J. Donnelly, pastor of St. Bernard’s, dreamed of a high school for the boys and girls of his parish. But already the parish was supporting two schools and educating about seven hundred pupils. How could they build and support another school when most of the parishioners were in the low-income bracket? But under the dynamic leadership of Father Donnelly and his self- sacrificing people, the dream became a reality in the com- pletion of St. Bernard’s High in 1927, Over thirty years ago, Father Michael J. Curran also dreamed a dream of a great athletic field as he stood on the brow of a steep slope at the edge of St. Bernard’s cemetery, looking down upon acres and acres of wasteland. In 1947, in spite of difficulties and frustrations, Father, too, saw his dream fulfilled in the completion and dedication of the Ber- nardin Bowl, one of the best laidout athletic plants in the area, and a great construction achievement. In constructing the Bernardian Bowl hundreds of trees were felled; hills removed and levelled; brook courses altered; tree stumps dynamited and brush destroyed; new roads, banks, and ramps constructed. To do all this, bulldozers, steam shovels, and trucks worked to capacity under the watchful eye of Father.Curran, pastor of St. Ber- nard’s, 149 150 Fitchburg Counctl ST.
