That we could choose the moments that should last, The moments that should have no future and no past. A time to cherish the happy days that never should fly Until the hands of time choose to wave a last goodbye. we - a , . -.- - , ® , Of the things we used to say in those happy bygone days. Truly for all of us the days will come and the days will go, But still the hands of memory will weave dreams of long ago, _ And the memory of the past will roy and half our joys renew. a a i‘ “F n Ey! Freshman days—a time to begin all over again! Gone were grammar school days—a time to end! We who had climbed to the top and felt so big, Now must go down far and begin all over again. The weather favored us on that September morn As we climbed the stairs of St. Bernard’s High And entered through big, wide, welcoming doors, Trying hard not to show how jittery we were. In spite of upperclassmen fears, so hard to define, There was a gleam of excitement in our alert eyes, As we went through the ordeal of finding homerooms, And opening of lockers that didn’t always respond. TTER Y There came a time when we felt like old “pros”, As we cheered on our frosh on gridiron and court. Planning a Saturnalia was fun and intramurals tops. Our class play, ‘The Lottery’, was second to none. As FRESHMEN we had a time TO CONCENTRATE... TO PONDERS, TO QUESTION ... TO BE SERIOUS TO DELIBERATE... Gone were the timid, shrinking fears of freshman days As we walked now with a firm step and head held high. _A time when the once unfamiliar faces were so no longer, When many a one-time stranger was now our closest friend. Slowly but surely with no apparent effort on our part We were little by little being formed into one class. 12 A time to be happy, a time to be gay; A time to socialize, a time to enjoy. v BO eb eS oO a v a i v 1o) 5 iss} se) v S) a = e as. i v te se, S oO i ae, n N SS) a ° —) i=) =_ oS = S x v om S| el Vv 5 v x © fe Te) c ol re) n fe 5 Fair of ’73. It may have been before is, but we do know that back in the fall of ‘59, she was ready making a name for herself as an enthusiastic, loyal n. This was the year her son, Bernie, although only a fresh- an, made the varsity football team and played in that emorable victory over Leominster, 14-8. What a thrill it was for his mother to read such newspaper ounts in the years to come as: “Bernie Leclair had both of SBHS touchdowns . .. high scorer for the season .. . football captain ... a berth in the North Worcester County All-Star football team.” Because Bernie also went out for basketball, baseball, and track, his mother cultivated an interest in all these sports and seldom missed a game. But even after Bernie’s graduation, she continued to support the teams. God bless you and keep you, Mrs. Leclair! May the good Lord give you the strength to carry on! This is to be for you jubilee year.” (Leviticus 25:10) | 11 | i mq 1 .1775... THE BIRTH OF A COMMUNITY In the days of Paul Revere and the “Somerset,” across the as in a suffering and oppressed Ireland, a brave little joman was doing a great work. Very quietly and cautiously, ano Nagle was converting little cabins into classrooms for bor children. She well knew that in doing this, she was olating the King’s law which forbade a Catholic to teach. prisonment, loss of property, and even death was the enalty. But with a strong faith and trust in God, she risked 1, even life itself, to do what she feit was His will for her. Possessing much, she would give all she had to the poor. low her home was a little cottage. Her clothing was so poor bey she was sometimes taken for a beggar woman. Her feet vat had once graced many a ballroom of Paris and the court XV, now trudged through the mud and slush of nar- aw streets and lanes as she walked to her schools or on her rrands of mercy to the poor. To perpetuate the work she had begun, Nano conceived the lea of a religious community and took the necessary steps yr its formation. On Christmas Eve, 1775, Nano and three thers began the religious life. The community grew very Owly at first. Great poverty and hardships had devastating ffects on the health of the sisters. Ten years after Nano’s death, the little congregation was on 1e verge of starvation. Dry bread and a little milk was the aily fare. Fortunately, a large donation from a benefactor ut the community on its feet again. The number of Sisters in- reased so rapidly that in a few years, they would be leaving yr distant shores—India, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, lew Guinea, Africa, the Philippines, and North and South ‘merica. The Sisters of the Presentation came to Fitchburg in 1886 and have been at St. Bernard’s High School since 1926. Nano’s first Sisters would leave Ireland in the slow-mov- ing sailing vessels of early days, built like the “Somerset” in a British shipyard and of sturdy oak. On the Nagle coat-of- arms, the oak predominates. On the crest of the Sisters of the Presentation, the two sprays of oak are symbolic of growth and the two skeins binding them together denote union. .. THAT FATEFUL APRIL NIGHT IN 7 Dies Fateful not only in the riding but also in the rowing of Paul Revere, as with oars muffled by a torn flannel petticoat, toss- ed from an upstairs waterfront window, he was rowed silently past the mighty British man-of-war, the “Somerset,” moored to catch rebel traffic between Boston and Charles- town. Landing safely in Charlestown, Revere borrowed a horse and galloped on to glory as he spread the alarm for the country folk to be up and to arm. Three years later the “Somerset” was wrecked off Cape Cod in an early November nor’easter and beached helpless below the cliffs. Recently as though seeking a role in the na- tion’s Bicentennial, the oaken skeleton of what was once the mighty “Somerset” has emerged from her watery grave in the sands. The oak timbers, pickled for two hundred years in salt water and preserved in sand, are probably harder to cut to- day than when they were laid down in Her Majesty’s Dockyard at Chatham, England, in 1746. 52 Sister Joan Mulcahy, Principal Sister Lourdes O’Malley, Assistant Principal That'll Be the Day When You Hear Sister Joan Say: “You don’t look comfortable, take off your neck tie.” “If you don’t like what we're having for lunch, go down to McDonald's and get yourself a Big Mac: “You still look hungry. Why don’t you stick around for the second and third lunches, too?” “Don’t hang around the bubbler! Come downstairs and I'll buy you a coke.” “Is that bubble gum you’re chewing? Let me have a piece.” “You're late. Why don’t you go home and come back tomorrow.” —Blue and Gold, October ’74 : His Excellency TIMOTHY J. HARRINGTON Auxiliary Bishop of Worcester REVEREND MARTIN P. Her dedication in the classroom and her twenty-five years of hard work with the various yearbook staffs has proven this. During our brief stay at St. Bernard’s, we have come to respect Sister Marcella for her kind- ness, determination, and most of all her love for others. Thank you, Sister, for being the wonderful woman you are. Your interest and concern for the students of St. Bernard’s will long be appreciated. . .a time to bring to a close our story of ’75, With so many happy memories to cherish and hold. But we mustn’t be content with yesterday’s glory. No, today, this very day to us is all important. There may be choices and decisions to be decided, Rejections to be made and challenges to be taken. All these requiring a bold readiness to take risks. “Launch out into the deep,” were our Lord’s words. He did not advise us to keep very close to shore. 150 Adams Studios 161 American Can Co. 162 Andy’s Sport Shop 167 Armand Hair Stylist 157 Army Navy Store 167 Babineau Insurance 164 Ballarin Pastry Shop 175 Banner Mold Die Co. 169 Baron’s Gift Shop 165 Baylins 169 Bean’s Shoe Store 156 Belanger Hardware 162 Belliveau Furniture 157 Benoit Furniture Co. 173 Bernardian Athletic Club 154 Bessette Glass Corp. 162 Blanchard Brown 162 Bourque Bros. 164 uckley, C.
