The Senior Class of St. Bernard’s High School Fitchburg, Massachusetts Present “A Long and Winding Road” In the 1974 BERNARDIAN, Volume XLVI FITCHBURG PUBLIC LIBRARY FITCHBURG, MAss, At the start in freshman year we looked ahead And saw before us a very long and winding road, A way that seemed endless, twisting in and out, Seemingly beckoning us on to take a first step. Constantly moving forward one step at a time, We persevered through the light and the dark, Each one of us at his own pace to the very end. Contents I. A Review ll. Senior Candids itl. How we longed to see familiar places and friends! Upstairs and downstairs we searched for our rooms, Sometimes finding them readily and sometimes not. Imagine our chagrin when told to take the elevator And finding out all too soon that none such existed. ... WE WERE THE FRESHMEN BSRNARDS, 7s Pe CMERe Thomas Landry, a freshman, played a leading role in the operetta, ‘“The Red Mill.” As an American tourist stranded in a little Dutch town, he provided much of the comedy and laughter throughout the operetta. Freshman boys served at the Christmas dance of ‘71 in the school auditorium. suneid | om DONA ynneitthlith Seal amen Naaatens Retaie at eifate,(a 'c uie siiel'sr ejie.e) = lege site 'e S L SALLY AND SAM ol at Best Acting Awards HICRDSVCHE arate) cit erate ee ee cee ee LV in NOWLIN Sarah Hani ee ese res kone by v stephen Gastonguay Presented by Father Carelli Freshman play FUSS V CRC mine erate asi ierists) = ots et TeGOry: ROberge Directed by WT GNCTOSS Se oe a oh eee a oe . .Margaret Haley Mary Lynn Nowlin Sister Mary Laurita MISESOUal Canon aie iets ses, a=, Loeboral Carle Stephen Gastonguay ; Matildae ss cree aiticieeten enc or Ree ee ale ee JUGY: Leger Assisted by MUSSER UIC aipretteeaceeeeten ce riateainthiny = ss ones a USaN lives Margaret L’Ecuyer PAEXm et ee on eet iosce ss ces shichard, Krauss Others in the cast: Dennis Allaire Gary LeBlanc Edward Barber Juliana McManus Mary Bianchini Michael Steinbring Diane Cormier Barbara Stone Diane Goodale Diane Tremblay We felt we had gone quite a way On that long, long winding road When we held our class elections And now had officers all our own. Down at the Bowl we felt a big thrill As we saw our sophs out on the field Valiantly playing the gridiron game As our cheerleaders cheered them on. 10 . THEN WE WERE SOPHS Then when we began our sophomore year in ‘70 We felt so grownup, mature, and worldly-wise. We walked with our heads held high in the air and with certainty and assurance in our gait. Then after weeks of many frustrations And rehearsals that seemed so terrible How good it was to have a ray of hope And see a fine show slowly taking form. How united we Juniors were As together we worked as one Each one doing his job well Whether on stage or on floor! The hall took on a gala look With its statues and fountains And the high flowered archway Through which seniors entered. Junior boys and girls served Each senior seated at table A dinner truly fit for a king From beginning-to-end courses. The joy of hearing laughter Resound throughout the hall As Seniors clapped, enjoying Our songs, skits, and dances. But there were tears there, too, As seniors thought of their JSR Now a thing of the vanished past And stored in the halls of memory. We want things repre- sented just as they are—Sincere, frank, true, and free from all sham. We have tried to tell our story here at SBHS just as it is now or as it happened before. Almost there, Seniors! Almost at the end of a long and winding road! 30 It was Monday morning on a mid-September da That these senior shots at random were taken Skies were gray and leaden with drizzling rain, With no sun breaking through the clouds, And everything called off down at the Bowl. i = sasha rR DNS ALINE AEE NNER R LETTE Ree Cnt eas Ideals are like stars; you will not succeed in touching them with your hands. Searching for life’s meaning Satisfying the need for sociability Returning to Nature Encountering Christ Denouncing the emptiness of modern life THE SPIRIT OF TODAY'S TEENAGER ““... you are seeking first of all to be authenticall human. You are looking for the meaning and tru value of life, and you seem to have found tw answers—temporary ones, but in themselves the are excellent. You find your preferred life style in belonging to group. Within a compatible circle of friends, yo are once again finding a way to satisfy the need f sociability that many people thought you ha rejected. Man canno t live alone; he needs to be member of a community; he needs conversatio friendship, giving, and receiving, and love. Then there is another thing. You are seeking an finding a return to nature, to the open air, th mountains, the fields, or the sea. You prefer rustic, almost ascetic simplicity but you feel th need to admire beautiful things and to enjo natural beauty and spontaneous song. But is all this enough? Might it not be a stimulus, preface, a form of prophecy for the coming of voice that says everything, an encounter that giv everything? We mean Christ—yes, Christ. Perha you are unaware that you are walking toward Hi We can tell you that He is walking toward you. Some of you say you are bored with everythin There is in the attitude of many young people sense of uneasiness...It seems to us we ca discern something profundly interesting in thi restlessness; that is, the sincerity of your spirit which are not afraid to denounce the emptin that modern life not only leaves but deepens within you. It is an emptiness deprived of tru strong ideals, deprived of reasons worthy of givin life meaning, value, and faith. The time comes when we must be “persons”, th is, people who live according to given principle Can a person live without principles? Can one wal in darkness? We need a light. Jesus said: ‘’! am th light of the world.’’ Recognize in Him the tru spiritual guide of your life—the moral “‘leader’”’ our time. A Christian is not a zero man, indifferent, insigni icant, irresponsible. He is not a “reed” bending the wind blows, ready to yield to the sway of fad interests, or public opinion. He is a logical, co sistent, responsible, free, and at the same time, faithful man. —Excerpts from talks to youth by Pope Paul VI. SEVENTEEN SEVENTY-FOUR SPIRIT 1774 was not a happy year for Boston. Since June, the sea gate to this busiest seaport in North America was sealed by British warships, no ship getting in or out. Most of the people were without jobs now that the harbor was closed and would not be opened until the tea dumped into the sea was paid for. Immediate response to the threat of starvation began moving in at once not only from the nearby towns but from the other colonies. Bostonians would live although belts were tightened. Fires of resentment burned bright at Boston’s sorry plight. On the village greens of New England, the ‘‘minutemen” began to drill. Hastily-gathered conventios discussed Boston’s sad condition. In far-away Virginia, George Washington declared, ‘‘I’ll raise a thousand men, subsist them at my own expense, and march myself at their head for the relief of Boston.” DLR) | ae PIXe ey et ce Rte cama Smuggled out of Ireland, at the age of fourteen, Nano Nagle was sent to Paris to finish her education. Penal laws in force at that time forbade any attempt to educate a Catholic. School days over, Nano enjoyed the gay social life of Paris and the Royal Court of King Louis XV. Returning to Ireland, she was appalled at the sight of the wretched condition of the poor. But what could she do about it? She saw no possible solution. She would return to France and in time forget all this misery she had seen. But the dismal tragedies of home could not be forgotten. She returned to Ireland determined to do something for her poor people. Putting her trust in God, and with quiet courage, she began alone. Her first step was to rent a small room to bea classroom for thirty of the poorest children. She well knew that in doing this, she was committing a crime punishable with imprisonment, fine, and even death. The number of classrooms steadily increased. Nano met all expenses as well as feeding and clothing many of the pupils. But there came a time when she was penniless and for the rest of her life would have to beg for the funds to carry on her schools and other charitable works such as a home for the aged. In 1775 she laid the foundation of her religious order of the Sisters of the Presentation. To do all this was no rosy romance but the stark realism of constant contact with bleak and depressing poverty. Kind towards others, she was severe upon herself. Her day began at 5:00 and with prayer, before she began her work in the schools from 8:00 to 5:00. Often at night she was seen with a lantern in her hand visiting her poor in their miserable hovels. Instead of being praised, she was often criticized for being over zealous and imprudent. Her schools were said to be centers of crime and vice. Her purity was assailed when she befriended disreputable outcasts. After thirty years she was prematurely worn out. She was overtaxed in mind and body by the constant trials and opposi- tion that blocked her way. The April skies of 1784 were over Ireland and her green fields when Nano died. Love God, the poor, and one another, were her parting words to her sisters. She did not live to see them’ venture forth to Australia, to India, to Newfoundland, to the United States, and later to Africa and South America. Her Sisters of the Presen- tation have been at St. Bernard’s High School since 1926. 45 46 ADMINISTRATION Sister Joan Mulcahy, Principal Sister Margaret Garvey, Assistant Principal REVEREND JOHN D. George Ramos took first position; Fran Vachon, third; Rich Godin and Steve Gastonguay, fourth and fifth spots to outrun Athol, 21 to 38. The JV team also won by a score of 15 to 50. First place was taken by Jeff Grammel; second, by Rick Croteau, and third by Richard Liberatore. The next two meets were against Leominster and Holy Name in which St. Bernard’s dominated in both for victories two and three. This remained the pattern for the Blue and Gold runners. The victory over Fitchburg, Monty Tech, and Notre Dame proved that this year’s team was out to win. Victories also meant trophies and SBHS had a big share. Eleven trophies were won by the Saints in the Knights of Colum- bus race. The Bernardian runners also took second place in the Wachusett nvitational and the Lunenburg meet with great team effort. Complications struck the Cross Country runners now and then, but there was always someone to fill in and carry on to lead the team to victory. Cross Country won its first city title, the first to win the City Championship. If future teams work as hard as this 1973 team, vic- tory and championships can _be- come a reality for years to come. —Richard Liberatore 108 1973 CROSS COUNTRY Mr. Lamothe, coach Co-captains— Richard Godin, ‘73 Francois Vachon, ’73 Seniors— Richard Croteau Paul Gamache Peter Gastonguay Stephen Gastonguay Geoffrey Grammel Richard Heinle Richard Liberatore Steven McCluskey Henry McInerney Gary McPhee Donald Muir Kevin Murphy Bernard Sullivan, mgr. The smaller Saints were thumped soundly by the more experi- enced team 32-15. They did, however, cross the goal twice in the final canto on runs by co-capt. Jim Donnelly and Alex Cruz. Steve Cioffi and Paul Membrino were particularly outstanding, but to no avail. The injury-riddled Saints were completely handcuffec by a highly-rated St. Peter’s, and fell to a third straight loss There were very few bright spots in the lengthy contest, bu it was evident that the winning spirit still remained in the hearts of the team. Coach Taddeo with co-captains James Donnelly 43 and Edward Barber 61. In the contest with a fired-up Athol team, the Saints were blanked with a score of 33-0. Four long-scoring plays featured the action for Athol, as St. Bernard’s failed to convert any of their long drives into touchdowns. Reserves who showed promise late in the game included Dave Whitney, Jeff Healy, and Bob Sullivan. Next the Bernardians traveled to Clinton where a mighty Clinton ball club awaited them. The Bernies proved no match for the powerful Gaels as they fell to defeat, 33-0. On October 27, the second half of the 1973 football campaign got under way. After five long weeks of frustra- tion, the Blue and Gold forces finally put it all together as they scored a con- vincing 26-0 shutout over cross-town rival Monty-Tech. Co-captain Ed Barber and Steve Cioffi opened gaping holes in the Monty Tech line, as did the rest of the Saints’ front attack. Co- captain Jim Donnelly also aided the attack with two touchdowns and a fine all-around performance. The Bernardians wasted no time in crossing the goal line as Donnelly scampered 23 yards to paydirt on the fourth play from scrimmage. The second Blue and Gold score came on a nifty pass play from quarterback John O’Horo to Bob Sullivan. Steve Cioffi made good on the one-point conver- sion and the Saints led 13-0 at half- time. On the kickoff to open the second half, Donnelly again brought the crowd to its feet as he sped some 90 yards for his second touchdown of the afternoon. Late in the game Steve Eggert tallied the final six-pointer for the Saints as he scored on a four-yard pitch from Brian Keane. Bob Sullivan added the one-point conversion and the Bernardians had won 26-0. The defense had been spearheaded throughout the game by the fine efforts of lineman Shawn Keating, Steve Cioffi, and John Shaver. An encouraging word to John Donnelly from Coach Day. “” David Kolazy 1 Ne The second victory came for the Bernies when they outscored St. Mary’s of Worcester, 7-0. The only touchdown came late in the game on a plunge through the center of the line by Jim Don- nelly. Steve Cioffi made the extra point count. Peter Lemay turned in a solid performance along with the steady efforts of guards Ed Barber and Paul Smith. Next, it was the Saints’ mis- fortune to run into a bruising Bartlett ballclub which handed them a 40-8 defeat. Donnelly scored on a sweep and followed with the two-point conversion on the only scoring plays for the outmatched Bernies. The fine efforts of the whole team accounted for their final hard-fought victory. Coach Richard Lamothe had eight lettermen playing ‘73 and '74 basketball: Paul Gamache, cpt. Thanks also for t boost given SBHS by the splendid record made—10 wins and 4 losses, and for meriting the honor participating in the Clark tournament in Worcester and in the District contest. At no time was there a let-down in the efforts or the interest of the team from the beginning of t season to the end. Even when up against teams out of their class and with a winning record, the girls ¢ not lose heart but tackled the opponent with grim resoluteness and determination to play a good ga regardless of victory or not. Handicapped by the great advantage of height so essential for a winning basketball team, SB players made up for this deficit by speed and clever, well-planned plays. Noticeable was the team spirit in working together and achieving success by the united efforts each individual. Unremitting hard work and unflagging fidelity to practice periods also contributed the fine record made. Our best wishes go with the team as they enter the Clark and District tournaments! Proving too much for Gardner in their second match, the Saints with Mike Dube in nets, outskated the Wildcats for a 5-1 victory. A 2-2 tie with cross-town rival, Monty Tech, was gained on goals by Gene O’Donnell and Donnelly. Aware of a future that is “‘not yet’’ but is sure to be And knowing that the time for doing what must be done Is not tomorrow, not even today, but the present ‘‘now” We strain endlessly forward, far beyond the reality, Leaving familiar things behind to enter the future. With a wish to grow and achieve our God-given destiny, Pilgrim-like we will not rest until we reach our goal, Give us your help, O Lord, on our long and winding road. To our BERNARDIAN supporters, listed in the pages that follow, we are most grateful and we wish to thank you for the interest you have shown in us, our school, and our yearbook of 1974. 7 Dr. and Mrs. Joseph B.
