basketball Freshman The class of 1991 has some fine athletes. Sixteen of them have formed one of the most successful team in years. Before 1988 began, Coach Chris Turkmany's squad had an 8-2 record. The record included a seven game winning streak. The biggest win of '87 came in the Bishop Montgomery toumament where the Vikings won the championship by defeating Bishop in the final 54-42. Victories over Burbank, Rancho Santa Margarita, and Kennedy enabled the Freshmen to get to the champion- ship. Kariem Minters made the all-toumament team while Melvante Minters was named Most Valuable Player. Both players were steady throughout the First half of the season. In Coach Turkmany's system, the concept of team play is constantly preached. Guards, Sean Balthazar, Brian Shackelford, Kerrington Livingston, Chris Reyes, and Ronald Gardette all saw prominent playing time. Many of the opposing coaches commented on the size of the Viking big men. Wesley Henderson, Shon Earnest, Daryle Magill, Kevin Dewig, and Demarto Green also displayed their rebounding skills for easy baskets and igniting the fast break. Alden Barnett, Mike Kantor, Marc Hawthorne, and Amin Aguero provided ad- ditional depth to the team, but more importantly, an enthusiasm to those on the court, which is essential for any successful team. basketball Varsity Early in the beginning of the season, the Lady Viking Basketball Team established one goal. This goal was to be League Champions in a classy way. It was the goal that finally would earn the Lady Vikes Respect, on and off the court. The ladies worked with intensity and the team became stronger and stronger. The team realized that there had to be a team effort in order to win. After meeting with the past time rival, St. Mary's, and victoriously defeating them, the Lady Vikes realized that they could not be stopped. The girls ended their season as league champions, with the satisfaction of being number one. All league honors were given to four of the girls. Seniors Demetra Smith and Crystal Nettles made First Team, Senior Pam Nelson made Second Team, and Sophomore Kim Robinson was given Honorable Mention. Con- gratulations to the Lady Vikes!
