basketball Sophomore Our Sophomore team has also joined the winning tradition of St. Bernard. They established two goals at the beginning of the season: to win the Angelus League title and to place in the St. Bernard J .V. Tournament. The first goal is still in sight as the boys battle the tough Angelus League teams, while the latter goal has already been accomplished, as the sophs took sixth place in the holiday tournament, beating two J .V. squads. This team can be very proud because in the last two years, no sophomore team has ever won a single game in the J .V. Tour- nament. The cornerstone of the Soph's has been rebounding and defense. When these two traits are combined with teamwork, the 1987-88 Sophomore team becomes unbeatable. , sk , 1. Jon Wilcoxson gets off a good jumper. 2. Floyd Hines skys over the corgpetition. 3. Fred Bables is in goo blocking position. 4. Jon Wilcoxson lays it up with ease. 2 154 BASKETBALL

basketball Freshman The class of 1991 has some fine athletes. Sixteen of them have formed one of the most successful team in years. Before 1988 began, Coach Chris Turkmany's squad had an 8-2 record. The record included a seven game winning streak. The biggest win of '87 came in the Bishop Montgomery toumament where the Vikings won the championship by defeating Bishop in the final 54-42. Victories over Burbank, Rancho Santa Margarita, and Kennedy enabled the Freshmen to get to the champion- ship. Kariem Minters made the all-toumament team while Melvante Minters was named Most Valuable Player. Both players were steady throughout the First half of the season. In Coach Turkmany's system, the concept of team play is constantly preached. Guards, Sean Balthazar, Brian Shackelford, Kerrington Livingston, Chris Reyes, and Ronald Gardette all saw prominent playing time. Many of the opposing coaches commented on the size of the Viking big men. Wesley Henderson, Shon Earnest, Daryle Magill, Kevin Dewig, and Demarto Green also displayed their rebounding skills for easy baskets and igniting the fast break. Alden Barnett, Mike Kantor, Marc Hawthorne, and Amin Aguero provided ad- ditional depth to the team, but more importantly, an enthusiasm to those on the court, which is essential for any successful team.
