It is just as important as English, Math, or Science. At Saint Bernard's, there are two major foreign anguages taught Spanish and rench, and a course in Russian, hich takes lace before school. Each studlent is asked to take a minimum of two years of one foreign language, and under the ell-trained eyes of our teachers, he students are given the full op- ortunity to learn a different language and culture. This year, we have a brand new staff of foreign lan age teachers which are: Ms. Slfewart, Mrs. Heller, Ms. Maiztegui, Ms. Mar- tinez, Ms. O'Connor, Ms. Petrissans, and Mrs. Ruess. They hope to enlighten the new students to the joy of a new culture and language. These new teachers, however, are led by Ms. Petrissans, the Head of the Forc guage Department. This year, the Foreign Language Department is trying a new teachin technique that involves physical and visual means to get the students more interested in the par- ticular foreign language. This new technique was approved by the In- ternational Board of Foreign Languages. This new method has also proven to be very effective to help teach both young and old students. With this new and very helpful tool, the Foreign Language Depart- ment promises a new and in- teresting way to teach foreign language students, even though most of the students won't even realize it at the time. This new method can enable students to become more aware of not onlythe grammar, but also the style of speaking and the different phrases to use if they were in a country that spoke the language that they are 5 learning. eligion is an important part of St. Bernard's life. The moral values that the religion classes teach set SBHS students apart from students in other schools. These values are very inspirational, and they are taught by competant teachers who dedicate their time and effort to other children of God. The teachers also stimulate the minds of the students to be at least, aware of the things that are going on around the world and that we can make a difference if we take the time to recognize the problems and the goodness in society and in people. The teachers also encourage students to form an opinion on many of the issues discussed in class. Overall, the religion classes at SBHS help the students learn more about themselves and more about each other. This is very essential in the years to come, when each one of us will have to utilize what we have learned in a certain situation. QQ-4' IH Ek Iififfi TT' ACADEMICS 115
