We begin high school as young adolescents and leave as adults to face the challenges that follow. Adolescence surpasses other phases of life in importance, for it is these years that most effect a change within us. We have left childhood: its images have receded into the background, yet it is inescapable and its presence forms a portion of ourselves. What the future holds is not immediately discernable, yet our adolescent years are con- stantly shaping our future. Although we are mindful pri- marily of the present, tomorrow is swiftly transforming us. We face the potentialities of our lives as women with joy. Eveiy child comes with the messezcge that God is not yet discouraged of mem. 10 Womuu, in your luufgloter you louoe the music of the fouutuiu of lzfe Mem goes into the neiey crowd to drown his own elezmour of silence. 1 W i 13 4 I 14 My flower of the tiny elroppeo' its petals forgotten In the evening it rtpens into et cgoleien fruit of nzernorjf. p ms F ,, M, .L,: igiQi,5J,.:,.y,.,qf-Q,-,N-fflgi,,.,W,:-f.-WL:WV A ,W-Q-f .f iYiiifsiviiffeiiwailzivffzfigw. fQiQ-11,z7-wx-ww-31M.. Administration Amid hectic activities held at Saint Bernard's, a smooth running administration prevailed. Replacing Principal Father Charles McGinley was Sister Arthur Marguerite, a member of S. B. G. H. S. since 1965. Sister Helen Philip, who succeeded Sr. Arthur as vice-principal, not only taught two courses, but also programed the schedules. Significant changes in curriculum formu- lated by the new administration included trimester marking and a Wide variety of en- richment courses. Special Junior English Introduces Varied Grouping New programs constantly arose Within the I English Department. An experimental English III class approached literature thematically rather than chronologically through an alternate group sizing system. While teachers empha- sized reading on a more educated and mature level, film study was resumed to improve the viewing of various movies seen by students. Frosh, Iancis Fuller indulges in an absorbing and penetrating Kathy Foltz and Sharon Page explore immense shelves of novel. knowledge. Shirley Curioso and Iudith Ferraro give their attention to Sue Dickson as she presents her views 30 Piecing the world together occupies Debbie Boiselle' sconcentration. Cz-1n't you understand? Pauline Butler desperately appeals, as Theresa Martin laughs at the perturbation of the rest of the group. Religion Awakens thc: SPIIII Through Self-Expression All possible ways to make our religion come alive was the goal of this year's Religion depart ment. In the class room, teachers attempted to point out the foundations and revelations of the Church today. Movies, tapes, and guest lecturers were introduced to provoke enlightening thoughts in the individual student. Elaine Carey and Diane Vincent flourish through dance motion. Math Introduces Film Slides Each student offered her own creativity in solving difficult Mathematical problems this year. Helping her develop this ability, the Mathematics department provided courses in Algebra, Geometry, Senior Math and for more advanced pupils, Consumer Math. Film slides were initiated to establish better com- prehension along with the use of overhead projectors to illustrate the complicated conceptions involved in Math. Intense thought and will power stimulate the probing mind of Nancy Stuart. Uncertainty is aroused as Ann Cavasin ponders over a calculation. P. Faria queries the validity of an axiom as K. Hanrahan ponders. Donna Shaughnessy and Eileen McCarthy concentrate with powers born from necessity in comprehending mathematical properties. Numerous Algebra II equations elude Ann Plourde's drifting mind. Business Demands Diligence Daily routines of the hectic business World were emphasized this year to instruct and to prepare students for their possible future business careers. Typing, Shorthand and Secretarial Procedures were among the numerous courses presented to all pupils. Visiting the Data Processing in Groton, Conn. en- abled classes to visualize the use of machinery for the complexities of business. Each informative lesson gave valuable experience to all business classes. Ann Mooney takes a quick glimpse at her next speed drill in typing. Winifred McGuire is mindfully keyed into her daily typing practice Ioyce Gardner applies the principles of Business Law as Elaine Donnelly continues to study. 33 With careful deliberation, Patty Shaughnessy applies her Spanish skills. We Understand Others To broaden our horizons, the modern language department has exposed its students to the various civilizations and cultures of their respec- tive countries. The use of films and slides has supplemented the academic program. As in previous years, the semester was climaxed by an informative Franco-Spanish Fair. Each student has the opportunity to encounter the ancient language of Latin, since it is corn- pulsory for all those 'capable of mastering it. After two years of learning the foundations, Latin is available for students Wanting to ad- vance their skills. Combining these Latin III and IV classes provided a new method of teaching for this year's Latin department. An interesting Spanish article concerning developments of Spanish culture has caught the attention of Carrie Vestuti. 34 By the Use of Languages Erasing her Latin conjugation, Deb Bissett is distracted by the teacher. Iody Connelly confers with Pam Secchiaroli in the language lab. Zina Iasys appears confident as she reads her Latin assignment. Pamela Clifford works diligently on her latest French assign- ment. 35 ,34'ff1,-1 K I K Intriguing Barbara Koehler are the complexities of physical science. Cautiously mixing solutions of acid for their ex- periment are Lynn Chapman and Margaret Maz- zarella. 36 Experiments and Theories Used 1 1 Besides her other tasks, Ramona Studer feeds the little white mouse. Bernie Drabik gives full attention to one of numerous experiments performed in chemistry. as Scientific Base To improve the student's ability to draw worthwhile conclusions from experi- ments as well as textbook material is the aim of the science department. A science course is offered to all students ranging from freshmen to seniors. These courses include physical science, biology, chem- istry, and physics. Puzzled Shirl Grippo asks, Who is Newton, any- Ioanne Schuch and Donna Eldridge investigate the scientific world through way? microscope Christine Bonanno and Mary Ellen Lynch question the contents of each others notes during a biol ogy lecture. Maura Iames studies the ancient civilizations through World His- tory. M.A.I. Program Introduced ae E. Maclnnis studies U.S. History with the flag as a symbolic reminder. Studying history enabled students to relate past events to the present. Ancient, European, American and newly- introduced Modern American Issues, consisting of eco- nomics and P.O.D. were offered to students. Social Studies evaluated day events and sparked an interest in the prob- lems of today's world. P.O.D. enables Chris Burgess to evaluate our nation's problems. Ready to make any changes, Sandra Damiecki carefully checks her notes. Darlene Barnes directs her attention to the lecture on the American Revolu- tion. M' 10199. Home Ee. Teaches Domestic Skills f L:'fr.-,Q ff, Cathy Crocker prepares her machine before she proceeds to sew. Countless functions of family life were taught throughout the year in the Home Economics courses offered at S.B.G.H.S. Basic skills in sewing and cooking helped each girl to pre- pare for the necessities of being future housewives. Debbie Faulk listens closely to lessons on being a good housewife. Home Economics classes enable Barbara Sahanen and Bernadine Drabik to learn the diverse techniques and skills of sew- ing. 39 Courses Enrich Individual Knowledge Carol Riley and Karen Schell review notes in French culture. Karen Weller concentrates on the complexities of Oriental studies. 40 Various subjects were introduced this year through enrich- ment courses. Russian history, Afro-American studies and Oriental cultures were offered for history scholars. Science was explored in history of science and biology seminars while notehand, speed reading, speech and Writer's sketch- pad aided in successful school work. Creative dance, gym- nastics, sewing, cooking and theater arts demonstrated stu- dent originality. Other enrichment courses included hu- manities, journalism, French culture, introductory Spanish, introductory college math and chorus. i Wnwqwwmwwfrwwwmwmwwwwmwaw Mary Bessette and Donna Piascik clap without interest, but Wendy Thaxton watches attentively as she keeps rhythm for a song learned in chorus. Sherril Powers learns the art of sewing in her sewing enrichment course. Catherine Hornberger experiments in some of the aspects of the history of science. Grace of movement in creative dance is expertly demonstrated by Elaine Carey. Finding solutions to the problems facing the Afro- American perplexes Nancy Stuart and Iudy Kaika. While Mrs. Hernandez reads to her class, Barbara Caruso enjoys an incident in Introductory Spanish. 41 ACTIVITIES A5 el river in the seez, work finds its fzeqillment in the depth of leisure. gig- 'fezjtrli 'I g5::t,F575's'V.'1..:, -5535'fu5'ff135Q?'f2f5f'fY52.S'e: '?ff'1?iR?:?15fi.!v5Qff1P7f 4'52,'?1r7f5,1s'pf5:f.f'ggi A-H5454 V3t,,2,'32s73isiHss Es? GENERAL DYNAMICS Electric Boat Division THIS YEAR WE CELEBRATE THE 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF A REVOLUTION . . . . . a revolution that began when the submarine USS Nautilus fired up her nuclear power plant on January 17, 1955. That was the beginning of America's nuclear Navy-the world's first and to this day the worId's finest. At Electric Boat division of General Dynamics, where Nautilus was designed and built, work is now underway on the Navy's 100th nuclear submarine. We're proud to preserve our position at the leading edge of the Navy's nuclear revolution. And we salute the officers and men of our underseas fleet on their 15th anniversary! 134 THE PERFECT GIFT Makes the Perfect day . . .
