In the time prior to Parents Weekend, the bulk of the resident student body was in an uproar over the alledged refusal of the administration to grant open house in the dormitories for the occasion. At a student convocation it was decided that the students would assemble en masse in the hallway outside the Student Personnel Office on Wednesday afternoon and present a petition. And assemble they did. The hall was jammed and the atmosphere was uneasy when Fr. Richard Jax, Director of Student Personnel stepped out of his office into the hallway and began explaining the position. Since at the time it was his understanding that the poorly- worded petition requested inter-dorm visitation privileges for those who were not eligible for them, Fr. Richard asked to meet with all those over twenty-one. In this way he hoped to present the legal problems to those who, under the law, are considered the most responsible. The rest is history. Fr. Richard, accompanied by Mr. George Laux, Dean of Men, systematically discussed the petition with St. Bernard senior students. In essence, it came to light that the great amount of misunderstanding occurred because of the misuse of terminology. ln the end, the students were granted a temporary open dorm system since it was agreed that a difference exists between that and the policy of interdorm visitation.
