We feel that, in dedicating the book to one person there is a tendencg for this tribute to become a political tool. Therefore. the 1972 BERNARDIAN is dedicated to the following GROUP of people whom we feel deserving of special recognition. Graf Hart has been actively interested in St. Bernard College dating back to the institution's iunior college days. More than any one man, he has sold St. Bernard to Cullman and the surrounding counties as attested to by the day-student enrollment. His contributions to the St. Bernard athletic program have played a lion's share in its success. Mr. Hart typifies the St. Bernard philosophy of personalized education as well as any man on the campus. His door is always open to provide aid and attention to the students of St. Bernard. 11291 vga Mr. Graf Hart W sq 1 ui Dr. Javier Camps is an instructor at St. Bernard. But more than merely an instructor, Dr. Camps is respected as a friend and confidant by the students position not as iust a iob, but has always taken en Leyes degree from Universidad de la Habana in 1955 and his M.S. from Kansas State Teacher's College in 1967. Dr. Camps is seen at right with another very dedicated instructor, Mr. Magdi Tadros. 12 FROM LEFT: Sergio Molina, Dr. Camp, Magdi Tadros, Ambrose Wureh. of St. Bernard. Dr. Camps seems to regard his r part in the social events and always has time for a chat with the students. Dr. Camps received his Doctor Mrs. Myrtle Box Mrs. Box has been with us behind the Snack Bar dating back to Shamrock days. She is always courteous and tries to be helpful regardless of how exasperating the student's demands. Mrs. Box has always shown more than a passing interest in the students. Many returning alumni make the Grotto shop their first stop in order to see and chat with Mrs. Box. r When this year's class began as freshmen, Bob Eramian also began his teaching career at SBC, so that he is, in a sense graduating with us. Bob was an asset to the college and one that the students felt a definite need for. We wish Bob the greatest amount of luck and wish to extend to he and his wife Nancy our appreciation for their efforts in behalf of St. Bernard Students. ws. -fr-ss H31 We : ff 1-gr? i tfgizyitffffl . f'Tf1'v7'.,,. . , fs .' ,f Milt.. , J ,t fi!! iii? Joseph carries a responsibility that sometimes goes unnoticed by those around him. The infirmary is a facet of the college which no one thinks about . . . until they need it. Br. Joseph makes a nightly trip to the infirmary in case things are needed after Nurse's hours. Also, it falls on Br. Joe to take care of the older, incapacitated monks, a service which he performs with the utmost dedication. , Mr. Bob Eramian Martin Fisher Martin Fisher is no longer with St. Bernard, but without his continued efforts, the publication of this '72 Bernardian would have been made much more difficult. We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks for his understanding and interest in the book, even after his departure from St. Bernard. We wish him all the best in the future. g I3 amiliar Faces W1 Us we-ww, .f M q1' .sv ti ,,,,W.,,,.Lf..g5gs11f Ja, J- ., YJ ,, af- 35, V' :S A x I 4.'. Av .' 3 . . - A. Peace, BROTHER??? I'II make you an offer you can't refusel Whatever you felt as a student for Saint Bernard College, and whatever you did for and received from the same, is now but a matter of record. Our varied academic and extracurricular careers, which for the most part commenced on a muggy, overcast day in the late summer of 1968, have been instrumental in determining our present stations in life. The early days are dim in our memories now, iust as the entire tenure eventually will be. But no one among us will stop trying to recall people, places, and things from those times which transpired so quickly and yet will always mean so much. It is not difficult to set on paper a comprehensive synopsis of general events and personal experiences spanning four years, it is impossible. The more memorable occurrences are common knowledge, and it would belabour the point to bring them up. The smaller remembrances, with all their myriad connotations and denotations, are best left to those who actually lived them. Taken together, though, everything we have experienced at Saint Bernard since our first hours on campus will hopefully lead to a benediction of years of good fortune. During these impressionable years, life at Saint Bernard proved to be a microcosm of the rest of the world, complete with the fulfillment and defeat of many aspirations, intermingled with sham, trickery, and politics. For everything that it was not, Saint Bernard was something in return although, of course, at times not everything was in accord. When we were students there were improvements and there were setbacks, both of which had to be expected. Above all, it was possibly expected by some that we would immediately and naturally assume a position which was contrary to the viewpoints expressed by the college administration, an assumption which made for some classic encounters over the years. At the very least, all members of both camps were critical of the other at one time, and with various degrees of intensity and success. The administration, for example, was frustrated with the results wrought by the Battle of the Grotto and the planned Appalachian Valley Music and Arts Festival, both of which came to a heated climax because of cultural differences they, in their different ways, sought to eliminate. We, in comparison, were frustrated by the slow pace of going to practical coeducation, the voids in recreational activities, and the constant clashing of administrative and faculty wills over what was good for the college. There are other matters over which we clashed, but the final analysis is the same - the entire sphere of events seems to have been a manifestation of the ever-present conflict between bureaucratic tendencies and the impatience of youth, and the fact that each side would not sufficiently surrender their interests until the final hour had come. There can be no mistaking the fact that our lifestyles have changed considerably since leaving Saint Bernard. Dormitories and off-campus homes have been traded for dwellings amidst the quiet of the country, the conventional malls of suburban homes, of the breakneck pace of a modern city. Topics of conversation, among others, have switched from blue ieans to Blue Cross and Blue Shield protection plans, and the collegiate Bohemian lifestyle has given way in the process of transformation. Along with countered dreams and relished successes, we now experience, there is a nagging feeling that we have been through it all before in a lesser degree. And we have. For the faculty, the administration, and every member of this class has in some manner influenced one another, and we will always habitually reflect this association. We are living very distinct lives now, much removed from the educational and cultural oneness known in college. For us, the classrooms and related buildings are still, although these innately sterile but theoretically invaluable structures still beat for others. lt is certain our association with Saint Bernard College has had varying degrees of mutual enrichment, but the ultimate greening of the college, despite what we have contributed to it, has been left to a future association of interested parties. We are limited to speculating about our own associations, and where we would be and what we would be doing if they had taken a different course. Undoubtedly, though, all of us throughout his or her own life will entertain memories of the bittersweet years when we were young and living in this one place. - Ernest J. In the time prior to Parents Weekend, the bulk of the resident student body was in an uproar over the alledged refusal of the administration to grant open house in the dormitories for the occasion. At a student convocation it was decided that the students would assemble en masse in the hallway outside the Student Personnel Office on Wednesday afternoon and present a petition. And assemble they did. The hall was jammed and the atmosphere was uneasy when Fr. Richard Jax, Director of Student Personnel stepped out of his office into the hallway and began explaining the position. Since at the time it was his understanding that the poorly- worded petition requested inter-dorm visitation privileges for those who were not eligible for them, Fr. Richard asked to meet with all those over twenty-one. In this way he hoped to present the legal problems to those who, under the law, are considered the most responsible. The rest is history. Fr. Richard, accompanied by Mr. George Laux, Dean of Men, systematically discussed the petition with St. Bernard senior students. In essence, it came to light that the great amount of misunderstanding occurred because of the misuse of terminology. ln the end, the students were granted a temporary open dorm system since it was agreed that a difference exists between that and the policy of interdorm visitation. Th play was a capsuled view of the philosophy and techniques used by the Marathon House, a rehabilitation house for drug addicts. l Eight ex-addicts, ages 15 to 23 years old, who are presently residents of the House, recreated scenes that took place during addiction and rehabilitation. Indirectly they also made an effective commentary on our society and the circumstances that lead people to drug abuse. While the pIay's content used drugs as the basic theme, it is really all about communication. It did not preach the evils of drug abuse . . . it rather l said, Don't cop out turn on to yourself and others without drugs. The play presented a challenge to communicate and to care. t After the action of the play was over there was a period of audience participation. Affairs Kaarlo Tuomi On March 8, the Cultural Affairs Committee presented a lecture by Mr. Kaarlo R. Tuomi, a former double agent spy for the U. S., whose activities have been featured in Reader's Digest. The topic of his lecture was The Diary of a Secret Agent of the Two World Powers. Mr. Tuomi was born in the United States. At the age of ten his family went to the Soviet Union. He was sent by the Soviets to an intelligence school in Moscow, where he studied for nineteen months. Afterwards, he was sent on an important spy mission to the U. S. He was confronted by the FBI, and then worked as a double agent for the U. S. for four years. In 1963, Mr. Tuomi defected and came to live in the United States. fi 5 .Q L' l . . V , g T V L, gi f su 1' :wkx 1 Q' 9 'X K , ff' f' fl 4 'ie 1 , vw - v . ,Q 65? HF' 3 ,. A N 1 2 as . . You're a Good Man Charlie Brown 1' ar The St. Bernard College Players under the direction of Michael Howley, presented Clark Gesner's musical hit, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, in March. This light-hearted comedy followed the Peanuts clan through their many adventures, ranging from The Baseball Game to Lucy's Crabbiness Survey. The cast consisted of Gerry Wilders as Charlie Brown, Frank White as Linus, Mary Jo Brown as Lucy, Kathy Barnes as Peppermint Patty, Marty Gavaghan as Snoopy, and Bob Long as Schroeder. Linus got into the spotlight as he sang My Blanket and Me, and later delivers a defense for Peter Rabbit during class. Schroeder has his problems with Lucy, who always wanted to marry a piano player. Snoopy was featured in three numbers, in which he absolutely stole the show, Snoopy, The Red Baron, and last, but certainly not least SUPPERTlME. Patty joined the gang in songs such as You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and The Baseball Game. Charlie Brown has problems galore, such as a kite-eating tree, the little red-haired girl and the usual rebuffs like, you're iust plain 'blahl Charlie Brown. 44 Lomentotions of the trials ond tribulations of homework -Curse you Red Boron!!! The play is to be presented in late November. Tryouts were held for three days last week, with twenty- two people coming out for parts on the first day alone. Tom Owston landed the part of Becket, the central character of the play. There are also four Knights which will be portray- ed by Bob Long, Gerry Wilders, Bob Greer, and Bill Pauls. Tony Burns, John Hunt, and Frank White are scheduled to play the parts of Priests in MITC, with George Caspar as a Messenger. The Chorus, the use of 'which dates from Ancient Greek plays, will act as a narrator in the course of the production. Its members include Mary Jo Brown, Bridget Cook, Cecilia Grabber, Rhonda Lavender, Janet Levesque, Fran Walsh, and Linda Weimann. Ed Long, Tom Metcalfe, and Rich Vanslavie will play the parts of Attendants, which are non-speaking roles. Murder in the Cathedral was tentatively scheduled to be staged once before, in the spring of 1970, when production snags brought on a cancellation be- fore most of the work was ac'- complished. The play deals with the murder of Thomas a Becket, an Archbishop of Canterbury in medieval times. His death came as a result of a command uttered in anger by Becket's long time friend, Henry II of England. As one might guess, they constantly bickered over the duties and responsibilities of the Catholic Church and the English monarchy. V .f J 11 ,mfg The Editors of the Bernardian '72 feel that certain things need to be said and acknowledgements made concerning the publication of this book. The yearbook should be a reflection of the good times, and, for realism's sake, the bad times, which make up a year of our lives at SBC. In this time of cynicism we hope that this year's book presents at least some of the progress which represents the true spirit of Bernard. This is what we should look for, and remember about St. Bernard and not the sometimes underhanded moves of some here who seek only personal gain, and use their power to pursue it. While meeting with opposition in regards to the BERNARDIAN '727 we found that everywhere there was opposition there was equal and opposite support. We found that for every POLITICIAN playing against us, there were two people there to help. We hope that we have produced a book which is representative of what the maiority feel toward Bernard. We wish to thank several people, without whom the book would have been much more difficult to produce. Martin Fisher, our moderator until his departure in February, and often moderator by proxy thereafter, was a tremendous help, both actually and psychologically. Mrs. Marian Mullin stepped in to assume the duties of moderator near the end of the year when we needed her to fill the slot. Mrs. Helen Glasscock showed interest in the book and helped us smooth over some rather touchy details. Fr. Aloysius, with an already overwhelming work-load, gave us tremendous support in the publication of the book. We appreciate very much his always being there when we needed him. Numerous people made up our staff and helped us put together what was eventually to be the BERNARDIAN '72, Tom Steckel stayed with us until the book was packed and in the mail. Jamie Carberry and Mary Jo Brown helped with the headache of circulation. Tom Barden arranged pictures and did layout. Br. Charlie Secundus, Mark Mages, Jeremiah Alston, John Hunt and several others helped with lay-out. We wish especially to thank John Kearney, Marty Gavaghan and John Jenkins, and the entire SGA for subsidizing an additional 38 pages to allow us to cover more of the events of the past year. We hope that this BERNARDIAN will recall for you some of the more memorable moments at SBC in 1971-72.
