AUGUST 13, 1955 PRESIOENT — t = w k w №. = № “For he is supposed to hold the place of Christ in the monastery, when he is called by his name Abba (Father). (Holy Rule of St. Benedict, Chapter |! Holding the place of Christ in St. Mary's Abbey is Abbot Patrick O’Brien, father to the students as well as to the monks. Dignified but approachable, he sets an example for all in the school, As president of the school, it is up to Abbot Patrick to govern it wisely—a task he has performed conscientiously and wel!. AOMINISTRATION REV. PHILIP HOOVER, O.S.B. Headmaster Father Philip, our Headmaster, is completing his eighth year in office. Under his administration, we saw the end of study per- iods, casual dress, and senior smoking privileges. In our Fresh man year, he encouraged student participation in sports, and two years later re-instituted the custom of bi-weekly assemblies Having had a hand in every phase of our work, he has given us the spiritual and material advantages of Christian education. REV. DUNSTAN SMITH, O.S.B. Dean of Discipline ustice tempere with mercy this ass phrase manner in which Father Dunstan u Discipline. He has won the respect ntire by his impartial judgement pressing tasks, he someh Religion REV. NICHOLAS COLLINS, O.S.B. Dean of Studies A qualified man for a Herculean task—that’s Father Nicholas While assisting the Headmaster of the school, he is also the Dean of Studies. The thought of being sent to Father Nicholas sends chills through the average student, and spurs him on to better work. This, then, has been Father Nicholas’ part in putting us through the Bee Hive I SF т E 1 | k eos - VERY REV. MATTHEW HOEHN, O.S.B. Librarian In the person of Father Matthew, St. Benedict's is fortunate in having a thoroughly qualified librarian. For thirty years he has been helping students read their way through 23,703 volumes of which the library boasts. His agreeable nature has made him consistently popular with the Bees for these many years - Ми ум BROTHER DENNIS ROBERTSON, O.S.B. Office Staff Brother Dennis carefully inserted the exam sten- cil into the mimeograph machine, then proceeded to roll out countless copies. This is indeed a trying task; it is said that one Latin test was so hard that it broke the machine. Without the lanky brother, the students would have to struggle through continuous subjective tests, in which they “exhaust the topic” a AM BROTHER MICHAEL SCANLON, ۰ Infirmarian Healer of the sick, comforter of the afflicted and guardian of the infirmary—these words are an apt description ot Brother Michael and his work. With gentle hands he cares for the dis- abled Bees; yet, ready to spot fakers with his eagle eye and turn them down with his lion heart. HALO ая a REV. MARK CONFROY, O.S.B. Guidance Director The vocational problems that have confronted us at St. Bene dict's have been solved chiefly through the efforts of Father Mark. We were placed in either a scientific or classical course in our junior year, according to tests and Father's personal knowledge of us. The task of selecting a college was made con- siderably easier by his suggestions and assistance in gaining en trance to them. Father also taught us Freshman English. BROTHER EDWIN AUSTIN, O.S.B. Attendance Clerk The silent brother leaned across the desk. and handed us our late slips. Brother Edward is Father Dunstan's adjutant in charge of tardiness, absentees, and other matters that do not reach the inner sanctum. Capably, if circumspectly, the good brother performs his duties. MR. PHILIP RAFTER Registrar One of the first members of the administration a prospective student meets is the registrar. For the last twenty-six years, Mr. Rafter has occupied the position of registrar, and in this capacity acts as bursar. In spite of the little contact he has with the student body, he manages to keep in his mind every stu- dent's name and record, as well as everybody who has ever graduated from the Hive. VERY REV. MICHAEL COLLINS, O.S.B. Chemistry, German Auf • Deutsch, bitte, und sitz dich hin, spoke Father Michael to our Ger man class. He speaks no English, for he is afraid that we would get used to it He is equally proficient. as a chemistry teacher, instructing the class in рагіог tricks , as he affectionately calls his experiments, Father's course, although somewhat difficult, offered us a thorough understanding of chemistry fundamentals. REV. GENADIUS DIEZ, O.S.B. History, Latin Our third year History course was pre- sented to us through the untiring ef- forts of Father Genadius. Skillfully, he guided us through the medieval and modern history of the world, noting with special interest the history of Spain. He also educates the Sophomores in the finer points of Caesar's Gallic Wars. REV. MARTIN BURNE, O.S.B. Religion, German It is mainly due to Father Martin that St. Benedict's has developed ¡ts peerless music department. One of the busiest priests at the Bee Hive, he teaches in- strumental skills to the former tin- eared students. Along with these mu- sical chores, he instructs Senior Religion and Junior German. REV. EDWIN MULLEN, O.S.B. Geometry “Nice speech brother, what does it mean?” With these words, Father Ed- win would reprimand any Sophomore with the audacity to hand him double talk. The Geometry teacher would draw his parallelograms and arcs with unfail- ing accuracy, trying to get us to do the same. Along with teaching Geometry, he supervises the cafeteria. REV. GERALD FLYNN, O.S.B. English Congratulations are in order for Father Gerald who is completing his twenty- fifth year as a priest and teacher at St. Benedict's. It is beyond his com prehension how anyone could forget the immortal phrases of Percy Bysshe Shel ley or some other well-know n poet. We believe that there is no English word that Father Gerald cannot pronounce, spell, and define correctly. 2 Seno £ REV. GEORGE SHERRY, Religion Father George, our Sophomore Religion teacher, came to us after attaining the rank of Major as a chaplain in the army From him we learned how Holy Mother Church survived throughout all the eras of time, true to the prophecy of Christ. Father George helped us to understand Popes Urban Il and Ри ( and their achievements. As far as we are concerned, he has succee | as a teacher, just as he has in his service to the country REV. TERENCE O'CONNOR, O.S.B Physics, Camera Club Moderator The qualified Physics instructor at the Bee Hive is Father Terence. His easy going manner and the ease which he conducts experiments and demonstra tions has caused many a Junior to sit astounded at his mental capacity. In terspersing his intelligent lectures with lively anecdotes, he has gained an ever- lasting popularity with his students REV. LAURENCE GRASSMAN, O.S.B Physical Science, Chemistry A staunch advocate of visual education, Father Laurence devotes at least one period a week to a film of scientific nature in his course in Physical Science He uses innumerable types of demon- strations in imparting to us his vast knowledge of the wonders and mysteries of the physical and chemical worlds. REV. JUSTIN CSANYI, O.S.B. French, Freehand Drawing Father Justin teaches Senior French and instructs the Sophomores in the funda- mentals of freehand drawing. His flare for renamin nts is matched by his international lection of persuaders, including the celebrated Fuji-Saki Father Justin is also tt creator of colorful posters which adorn the walls of the school at Christmas REV. EDMUND NUGENT, O.S.B. Religion, Speech Students at St. Benedict's are taught the art of correct speaking by Father Edmund, a fine speaker in his own right. His course takes in the entire speaking field from dramatic readings to ex temporaneous speaking and humor. Any oratorical savoir faire that the class of 56 might have, it owes to this teacher. |n addition to his teaching duties, Father Edmund moderates the Forum. REV. LEO BEGER, 8 Latin, Golf Coach Pater Leo venit and he remained For ten years he has been taking the Sophomores through the intricacies of Julius Caesar's Gallic Wars. His clever puns and “tid-bits' on the lives of the Romans will remain in our minds long after the A.A.'s” (ablative absolutes) and the “D.P.'s” (deponent verbs) are forgotten. REV. ANSELM MURRAY, О.5,В, Mathematics, P.T.A. Moderator, Religion Everything from counting apples to figuring tangents was included in our Freshman Algebra course—but we were in the competent hands of Father An- selm. Не used the simple teaching method of instruction, demonstration, and then drill, drill, drill, until we had no doubts. He is also the efficient moderator of the Parent-Teacher As- sociation. REV. OWEN HUDSON, O.S.B History, Alumni Association Moderator Notes, essays, and outlines were Father Owen's weapons for drilling Ancient History into us. After the first quarter marks had been given, he gave particu- lar attention to the students that flunked, and by the end of the first semester they knew their history. Father was a unique teacher, but he brought us through our first year of history at St. Benedict's with a better under standing of the matter, as well as the work necessary to attain good marks in the subject. REV. CORNELIUS SWEENEY, O.S.B. English During our Junior English course we were made aware of the importance of facing reality by Father Cornelius. We will remember the immortal works of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, and other famous authors to which we were in- troduced. After having been buried in the “Elegy in a Country Churchyard” and “Lost Paradise , we were brought back to life with his teaching that Christ will reward us if we do our best None will ever forget the English we learned in Father Cornelius' class. REV. COLUMBA RAFFERTY, O.S.B. History, Teloldg Adviser, Senior Moderator We entered the Senior History class with the presupposition that it would be a picnic, but were quickly shaken out of this delusion by Father Columba's rousing voice. As Senior Moderator, he has had a hand in all our social activi- fies, and concerned himself with our problems, both scholastic and personal. As Telolog adviser, he drove us relent- lessly that we might have a yearbook comparable to the best. He is not only a teacher to every Senior, but a friend as well. REV. THEODORE HOWARTH, O.S.B Mathemat The fact that all stu created with a natural math somet Father Theodore polyhedral angles, he mathematical ideas which we may have He divides his knowledge of Algebra, Trig, Solid, and Analytical Geometry be tween the Junior and Senior classes REV. BENEDICT TYLER, O.S.B. Religion, Head of- the Religion Department Although the Class of '56 has never had Father Benedict as a teacher, we have come to know and respect him in his capacity as head of the Religion Department. As the Freshman Religion teacher, he takes the first year men through the aspects of the Mass, Liturgy, and the Saint Mary Missal. The underclassmen are fortunate in having their Religion course in his hands. REV. EUGENE SCHWARZ M Music, German, Religion Music Director One and two and three and hand beat with the preceeding repeated in the desired rh among the manifestations of chorus room during th e unct 0.5.8 Choral ur, a numbers ythm is the vocal endeavors which emanate fr 2m the periods Fortunately for his Freshman and Junior classes, Father Eugene scends from the world mordents to the more conducting a class of freque ntly de cadenzas and prosaic task of REV. NORBERT McLAUGHLIN, ۰ Mathematics Father Norbert came to the Bee Hive in time to greet the Class of '56 in our Sophomore year The blackboard com pass had a way of getting him into knots, so he resorted to a piece of chalk to draw his geometric figures, which were invariably so big that half of them wound up on the border and wall. Al- though he is no artist, he knows his Geometry; and when we co his course, we knew it 302. REV. BASIL 20051, O.S.B. Biology, Biology Club Moderator, Sophomore Moderator A miniature zoo, movies, slides, and ex- periments are all part of Father Basil's equipment for leading the Sophs through the natural sciences. An efficient Bi- ology Club moderator, he takes this selected group through the more intri- cate parts of the biological world. As moderator of the Sophomore class, Father Basil has spread his personality over two hundred students in all of their activities. REV. AMBROSE CLARK, ۰ Latin, Benedict News Moderator Along with being the faculty adviser to the Benedict News, Father Ambrose in troduces the Juniors to Cicero and the evil Cataline, and the Seniors to Virgil's Aeneid. Very often it happens that a particular word has a synonym that 5 practically extinct, then Father Ambrose declares, This, gentlemen, is your word for the day. The Virgilian scholar then proceeds to explain the etymology of the word Father Ambrose is often asked, Read any good dictionaries lately? REV. PATRICK McCAFFERTY, O.S.B. Latin Along with instructing the Freshman in the essentials of the Latin language, Father Patrick finds time to serve as as sistant librarian. Prior to his arrival at St. Benedict's, Father was curate at Blessed Sacrament in Elizabeth. REV. ANTONY KOVACS, O.S.B. Mathematics Considered by some to be the bete noir of the library, Father Anthony also teaches Freshman Algebra Although we have never encountered him in his teaching capacity, we learned of him through the reports of his present classes. Father spent three years teach- ing at Delbarton before coming to the Bee Hive 2 MR. JAMES IRVING French, English Mr. Irving came to the Bee Hive in the fall of '55, and since that time has proven himself an excellent teacher. Addressing his students with the classic title mister , he holds the class spell bound with his fluent French and knowl- edge of Gallican culture. REV. BRENDAN CASH, O.S.B. English Aftér serving as curate in Wilmington, Delaware and St. Joseph's, Maplewood, Father Brendan came to St. Benedict's and was appointed Freshman English teacher. Father Brendan associates with the rest of the student body in the per formance of his job as assistant ۵ Father Matthew in the library. MR. RALPH CONFESSORE Biology Mr. Confessore graduated from the Hive and enlisted in the Air Force, in which he served two years as a rocket specialist. He then attended Seton Hall University and graduated with a B.S. de gree in chemistry. He is the new mem- ber of St. Benedict 's faculty who teaches biology. The Senior Religion course is organized with the thought in mind that within a few years after graduation, most seniors will be out in the world on their own, exposed to the different trials of faith and sex. Apologetics, which covers the proofs of God's existence and Catholic slants on worldly events, is featured in the first semester. Lectures on various aspects of married life, with a regard for both impediments and the role of sex, are given in the second semester by Father Martin, the teacher. THE BOSS: Editor-in-Chief Charlie Drew checks material. MANAGING THE LAYOUTS Layout and Managing editor Clair Flinn works with his ruler. PEN-PAL: Literary Editor Tom Clohosey tries his hand at writing. This year's Telolog staff was distingushed by re- markable cooperation on the part of most of the staff members The Editors have all done a commendable job in planning and writing the book; while the Associate Editors typed and gave other assistance without which the completion of the book would have been impossible. The Business Department kept the ads straight and the money rolling in. All these factors combine to make what we hope will be one of the best yearbooks Benedict's ever put out BACK FROM VACATION Efficient Co-Sports Editors Bart Licciardo and Sam Cer rato co-sports edit their sec- tion.
