Orest Dzydzora, Craig Kupchik, Walter Polehenky, Mr. Romanyshyn, James Ryan, and Daniel Kec. The annual Ukrainian Day Was held on Sunday, March 3, 1974. Following a Divine Liturgy celebrated by Bishop Joseph Schmondiuk, D.D. in the College Chapel, the guests enjoyed a typical Ukrainian dinner prepared by the parents. The Ukrainian public speaking contest was the highlight of the afternoon's festivities. The theme for this yearls orators was heroism, and it was developed in its ramifications and nuances by each of the five house seniors. The judges for the contest were Monsignor Steven J. Chrepta, pastor of St. Vladimiris pro-cathedralg Joseph Lesawyer, Supreme President, Ukrainian National Association, and Dr. Wasyl Luchkiw, Librarian, Rockland Community College. Musical interludes were provided by the Prep Chorus under the baton of Professor Bernyk, and by James Ryan with a stirring, solo rendition of uRushynchok.,' The entire program was conceived and directed by Mr. Roman Romanyshyn, Instructor of Ukrainian at the Prep, Walter Polehenkv, 3fd Place 74 Daniel Kec, lst Place James Ryan, 2nd Place Orest Dzydzora v H H 14 H H D4 P4 D4 P4 u P4 H u u n P4 V4 D4 P1 P4 Ll 7V77TVTvvv7'V 7 Q L Q L Q l Q fl L Q ti CTYAEHTHPOKIIYETBEPTOPO 3 1 Ma.no1 Ceuinagilgmgiggsgbnnin B Cmempojngi, I: YKPAIHC-BKHVI ,ZIEHH 4 l P 4 l . x f , ,4 X . The annual Public Speaking Contest, sponsored by the Parents-Alumni Association, was held before an assembled throng in the Prep auditorium who had just enjoyed a spaghetti dinner benefitting the senior class. The finalists were determined from among a field of nineteen semifinalists who had delivered their speeches the previous Friday before a student body assembly at which Miss Marguerite Dilanni, Mr. Roman Romanyshyn, and Mr. William E. Barnes had acted as judges. Judging the final contest were the Reverend John Bura, Prep graduate and former instructorg Mr. John Santariga, Dean of Students: and Mr. Gus Sclafani, a graduate of the Prep and an account executive with Merrill Lynch stockbrokers. 76 Father Mosko explains the contest rules prior to the students' drawing for speaking position. The final order of the contestants was the following: George Lcncykg Greg Scallong Nico Verses, Kevin Tobin: Michael Mandziag David Marting Kenneth Mandevilleg Charles Gregory Scallon Kenneth Mandeville didn't let an injured leg prevent him from giving his fellow contestants a run for the money. Kevin Tobin, now a student in the Speech and Drama Department of the Catholic University of America tied with Charles Valases for lst place. George Lencyk, one of the four juniors competing, came in 4th place. VUIUSCS- 2nd Place Winning Speech Gregory Scallon, '75 W' Off on the distant horizon of American politics, the electorate is beginning to perceive the approaching thunclerheads of a political storm, spawned on the one hand by a growing federal bureaucracy and on the other by a diminishing sense of responsibility on the part of the voters. Both these tempestuous conditions with which our democracy finds itself afflicted, are negative ramifications of the passive attitude nurtured by Americans as a safeguard against the social turbulence of the sixties. As such they form a barrier between ourselves and the political process, and thus, we, the citizens of the United States, have abandoned our rights and duties as members of a self-governing society. It is this crucial problem of the lack of participation by the people, with its many adverse and far-reaching effects, that deserves our undivided attention today. In order to be responsive to a democratic institution, an individual must possess firm convictions as to the course of action he wishes his government to pursue. The American Revolution was the inevitable result of the staunch stand taken by our colonial forefathers. Let us emulate their noble example and perpetuate the ideals which they so gallantly sought to preserve, by adjudging the issues of this decade without equivocation or uncertainty. While each of us has the right to his own individual political views, we must also realize that others hold theories which may be contrary to our beliefs. We must accept and welcome such diversification, because it is this openmindedness that enables our government to be responsive to the needs of the people. The application of his views is the most important role the citizen can assume. With a voting machine as his podium, the voter's one ballot, in conjunction with those of other concerned citizens of similar political convictions, is able to determine future national policy. Thus, voting should be considered a solemn duty, not one to be taken lightly and an opportunity that should never be ignored. But before we are able to vote responsibly and intelligently, we must carefully assess the candidates and the ideologies they represent. Through prudent decisions, we, the voters, choose a contender for office, Who, We believe, reflects our way of thinking and, if elected, will offer a more positive alternative for progress than will his oppenent. We are also able to eliminate those candidates who would strive to undermine our liberty from within our political system. Above all we must endeavor to preserve the continuation of reliable government that exists for the people and readily submits to the will of the people. An observation made at the dawn of the French Revolution by Jean Jacques Rousseau seems particularly applicable to the threat of our growing federal bureaucracy and the American citizens' diminishing sense of responsibility. Forseeing the downfall of the French government, he warned his compatriots in words that we should take to heart today. As soon as public service ceases to be the chief business of the citizens, and they would rather serve with their money than with their persons, the state is not far from its fall. Altar Boy Convention November 2-4, 1973, saw the gathering of altar boys from all three dioceses ofthe Ukrainian Catholic Church in America for a convention. Begun twenty-four years ago by the then Bishop of Stamford, now Archbishop of Philadelphia, the Most Reverend Ambrose Senyshyn, OSBM, the conventions offer boys an opportunity to visit the Prep and to meet with the students and faculty. Almost every seminarian attended a convention prior to coming to the Prep. KOLODIY KOLODIY FUNERAL HOME PHONE 3136 WEST 14-th ST. 621-4449 CLEVELAND, OHIO 44109 The spell of arms and voices: The white arms of roads, Their promise of close embraces and the black arms of tall ships that stand against the moon. Their tale of distant nations. They are held out to say: We are alone. Come. And the voices say with them: We are your kinsmen. And the air is thick with Their company as they call to me, Their kinsmen, Making ready to go, shaking the wings of Their terrible and exultant youth. So be it. Welcome, O life! I go to encounter for the millionth time the reality of experience and to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race.
