He later participated in an Army examination in which he was one of only seventy-five national finalists selected to be trained for espionage work in the Far East. One of the most popular places on campus is the library. Used primarily for reference work and study, it also serves frequently asahaven forquiet relaxation with an interesting magazine. Open throughout the day, the reference room is always busy-and justly so. ln evaluat- ing the school, The State Department of Education declared in its evaluative report that the reference collection is an unusually fine one, and the titles recently purchased have been carefully selected. With a collection in excess of 13,400 volumes and subscriptions to more than 125 periodicals and newspa- pers, The Prep School Library ranks among the best school libraries in the State. The average number of books per pupil in Connecticut public schools is 2.5, in the diocesan schools, 6.45 in pri- vate schools, 30.0, while St. Basil's can boast of 139.2 books per pupil. This year we have added the services of a full time librarian, Mrs. Candace Herbst, vvho holds a Masters Degree in Library Science. The library is unusual in that it has a very strong Ukrainian section. lt pro- vides students with much materi- al-books, periodicals, nevvspapers, pamphlets, maps and illustrations-es- sential to a thorough understanding of the cultural heritage and national history of the Ukraine. There is something about a senior that no one usually realizes, he is able to find more time for relaxation than do underclassmen. There is always some one book a senior hates to pull out of his locker. What book is it here? And the biggest smile is the one a senior saves for his acceptance into college. A xii The Prep sponsors a variety of ex- tracurricular activities, and encour- ages participation onthe partofevery student. We feel that such partici- pation will add to the wealth of the boy's experience in many ways: com- panionship, the disciplinethat comes of cooperative effort, provision for other than academic interests and skills, trainingin shared responsibility and leadership-or, in other words, the harmonious development of a well-rounded young man. The Prep does not engage in any inter-scholastic athletic competition. It does have, however, an active in- tramural program in basketball, touch football, and volleyball, and involve- ment in these is encouraged under proper limitations. The object of the athletic program is not to produce professional athletes, but to develop the boy's body along with his mind, to provide needed relaxation, to in- still a competitive spirit, and to teach fair play and cooperation through team play. Following the dinner, there vvas a series of plays and a choir presentation. First was a comic French play supervised by Miss Lange. Second was a short depiction of a typical Spanish Christmas under the supervision of Miss Delanni. Third was a serious emotional reading of the celebration of Christmas by a Priest in a German concentration camp during World War ll. This was directed by Father lvlosko. The Choir sang Christmas carols of various languages and the evening was ended by a presentation of gifts to the children by St. Nicholas. 55 n Q Q 1 L' x 'ZWYZ we Q Nei my . 9' 'Y xvY3'Qi'g Qw5 axi- w 4' ,As FIRST FRID ASS Early this year, Father Mezzomo, seminary prefect, resumed the traditional First Friday Mass which had been suspended those few recent years in vvhich the Prep had been accept- ing seminary students exclusively. Early this year, the students had expressed the desire to have a community divine liturgy so that all the students would be able to participate. So far, the liturgy has depend- ed on the spirituality of the student body and has strength- ened their understanding of the liturgy, bringing them together in prayer for their ovvn intentions. The First Friday Mass has once again become an integral part of the sched- ule each month. The songs that pour from the mouths of the choir members are always well rehearsed and presented. Under the direction of Professor Alexander Bernyk, it is one of the most vital student activities at St. Basil's. The administration is concerned not only with teaching the academic sub- jects, but also is acutely aware of the arts and the cultivating effect they have on young men. The members of the choir meet every Wednesday and sometimes Saturdays to rehearse songs of various nations QUkrainian, English, French, Spanish, ltalianj. At times it seems to be tedious travail, but the members of the choir always make a good showing. First Row: VV. Loznycky, Z. Kulynych, l. Martin, S. Vaga, M. Mandzia, Prof. A Bernyk. Second Row: VV. A wide variety of elaborate plaques, Easter eggs and other artistic creations soon began to emerge and the club's showcase display in the library gives evidence of the contributions which students have made.
