And these are our memories, these years of work and play binding us closely in fellow- ship. VVe leave the classroom, the gym, the corridors filled with youth on the threshold of life: serious in scholastic duty, eager in sports, playful in the humor of their years. These are no longer ours. We came, we studied, and hope we have left our mark. We now face our future confidently - with an humble self-assurance fashioned by our years at Saint Basil's. As future experiences will, perhaps, crowd from our minds these eventful years, it is our hope that through the pages of this Yearbook we shall enable you to relive these memorable days. It is with sincere appreciation for all who have contributed their assistance, that the Senior Class presents to you this Yearbook of their memories, your Chateau. I r With great expectations we entered upon our secondary school education. Getting over the clif- fieulties of adjusting ourselves to the wonder of high school life, we suffered the fate of all fresh- man classes. The desire to come out on top in everything we undertook was reflected in the ap' pearance of many Freshmen on both sports clubs, and the freshmen production of the school play which was an overwhelming success. One of the highlights of the year proved to be the intramurals in which the agile lircshmen team came within one tally of heating the heavily favored seniors. We also excelled seholastieally by contributing the most names to the llonor Roll. Perhaps no class entered school with a keencr spirit and greater zeal than did the sophomore class of l954-55. This, above all others, was to bc our year, for we were no longer low man on the totem pole. Now it was our turn to clamp down on the poor freshmen f and well everyone knows that a freshman is the lowest form of animal life. Now that we were fullefledged sophomores, we could assume that hlase indifference to scholarship that upperclassmen seem to think belongs to them. Feeling secure in our second year, we no longer had to let our studies interfere with our education. CLASS HISTGRY SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Left to Right: John Reilly, Treasurer: Fran- cis Rogowski, Vice-President: Paul Bumbar, President: Gerald Sywanyk, Secretary: Jo- seph Slavinsky, Sgt. at Arms: Frank Dagos- tino. Historian. However, rudely awakening to the fact at the end of the year that but 22 of the original 45 remain, we came down to earth fast. ln addition to enjoying ourself, we managed to accomplish a great deal. This year marked the teaching debut of Father Boholnick and our first encounters with French and German grammar. A majority of Sophomores were in the ranks of the newly-formed school orchestra. This was a year in which we dominated the sports field with our class placing three men on the basketball team Cwhich captured the New England Small Schools Champ- ionship in Mainej and six finding berths on the baseball team. Again, as sophomores, we were sec- ond only to the seniors in the intramurals. During this year, we were honored by the bishop Peter Chami of Bostra Syria. visit of Arch- been made in when we re- We found several changes had the administration and the faculty turned for lunior year. With Father Skrincosky taking over as Vice-Rector of the Seminary, Father Shary being replaced by Father Paska, and the debut of Father Sagan. This year's retreat will be remembered for Father Ryder's views on social customs. As in past years we again excelled in sports. Placing six men on both sport clubs we showed our athletic prowess. A highlight of the Page 34 baseball season was the shutout upset over Stame ford High School. This year we let no one beat us in the intramurals and upset the favored senf iors. A rivalry which is now traditional was begun when we beat the stniors in a football game. Vile rejoined teachers and boolas with some sad- ness in the fall of '56, realizing it was our last year. Upon our return wc all agreed that we were very fortunate in having as our senior class moder- ator, Father Mosko, without whose advice and aid we could not have put out so fine a yearbook. VVC received our rings and eagerly awaited the day when we could accept our diplomas. Again our class came out on top in all undertakings with the baslactball team entering the CIAC tournament, being defeated in an overtime by the championship team. The baseball team hit its stride with senior backing and the seniors strongly supported the newf ly-formed bowling team. A track team was organized late in our senior year 4 the willingness and enthusiasm of the team members should find it eventually with the same chainpionship caliber as our two major sports. A long to be remembered event occurred in our last year - the installation of bishop Senyshyn as the Bishop of the newlyfcreated diocese of Stam- ford. Looking back, we see that we have many mem- ories to cherish and many friends to remember. Certainly we can say that the class of 1957 has been notable in the field of scholastic endeavor, sport activities and extra-curricular achievements. First Row, Left to righi: F. Rogowski. F. Every player contributed to this victory which set a pattern for the rest of the year. In the ncxt game against St. Luke's, the- Basilites knocked out their pitcher in the first inning, gaining an advantage which could not be challenged. This overwhelming success last- ed until Stamford stopped Basi1's in a one-sided game. St. Basi1's rebounded from this defeat, and in their second game with Stamford High, shut them out with a score of 7-0, thus closing the season with five freshmen, five sophomores, the season with a record of 10 wins against 1 loss. St. Basilis played five freshmen, five sophomores, and six juniors and will have the complete squad back again this year. In winning 10 of 11 starts the Prep. Nine scored 111 runs to the opposition's 38. Six reg- ulars batted bettcr than 300. A1 Yeager clubbed the hall at a .561 clip while Di1Vluro, who played eenterfield and pitched. hit a welcomed 419. Other leading batters were 'loc Slavinsky 369, who plays first base, Catcher Fran Rogowski who hit at a 333 clip with A1 Nanai and George Maintanis also leading. Nanai won four games and Yeager three to lead the pitchers. With Four seniors as starters on this year's line, St. i3asil's looks forward to a highly suc- ressful season. On December 15, 1956, Bishop Senyshvn was installed bv Archbishop Amlcto G. Cicognani as the first Exarch of the Stamford Ukrainian Catholic Exarchate. The impressive ceremony, held in the school auditorium, was attended by about six hund- red persons, over a hundred of which were members of the clergv, including Arch- bishops and Bishops. Also present were the Governor of the State, the mayor of Stam- ford, and other such dignitaries. The senior class participated in this event by sing' ing in the choir and serving as ushers. After the installation, the site of the ceremonies was transferred to St. Marvls school auditorium. During the banquet at the auditorium, the school orchestra de- lighted the guests with its renditions. The meal completed. speeches were delivered bv the various hierarchy, congratulating Bishop Ambrose. The last speech of the day was given by Bishop Ambrose, In it he expressed his gratitude to all concerned a.nd concluded with the words, I pray, the good Lord, that all be blessed a hundredfoldf' Page 63 , 4 llv thc uutlwritv vested in me ....
