A graduate of Notre Dame, Coach Hession infused in his charges the Fighting Irish spirit. With only a few lettermen from the preceding year, there was a spirited struggle for first string berths. Although the Blue and Gold team was mostly on the wrong end of the scoring column, they won the admiration of everyone with their fine sportsmanship and irrepressible spirit. J. Mathews. This year's staff introduced many improvements and revisions to the school paper. The name of the paper was changed from Review to Quarterly , a name which suits better its periodic publication. Producing a paper requires the combined efforts of everyone from the editor down to the printersg each one complet- ing his piece for the finished product. The new Quarterly with its unity and versatility proved to be a better paper that fully represented our school activity and the student writing ability. Much that the scientist believed implicitly IOO years ago has gone into discard. New methods of investigation have set up new theories and knocked down the old. With the biology, physics, and chemistry laboratories always open for use to the science students, the peculiar similarity between the sciences is exposed and informal dis- cussions are conducted. The future scientists who are products of this club will be all the more truly scientific, knowing no contradiction exists between Science and God. All thanks to Fr. Chrepta whose patience has been astounding. Lynch. Bilovus. Zanowick, Fr. Fedorchuck. Zgnqwiclx, Losten, Fr. Chreptu. Suchower Lukacxylx. Drama The time and energy spent rehearsing was well repaid when the Dramatic Club staged Career Angel , a delightful three- act comedy-fantasy. Under the skillful direction of Fr. Paska, our Thespians culmi' nated four months of faithful practice with a first-rate production. Congratulations, Dramatistsl Sitting: Molodowitz, Schietter, Gilleskie, Lad- nyk. Zanowick, Losten: Second Row: Harrigan. Starratt, Fr. Pasha. Mathews. DeNike: Third Row: Lultaczyk. Suchower, Campbell. Fraud, Kane, Ryan. One of the most profitable forms of argument is debating. Each team tries to uncover the weakness of its opponent's statements as well as to establish the truth of its own. Debating affords us clear think- ing, quick and accurate iudgment, fore- sight, and capable expression. Here, at St. Basil's, Father Paska has drilled every English class in debating. The students realize that the aim of debating is to secure an understanding with the student on the basis of logical thinking in argumentation. Debating is a vital activity, and its practice will be of benefit to the student both in school and in later life. Sitting: Donahue. Fr. Knowledge, like religion, must be experienced in order to be known. One can't picture the Senior class without Tom Barry. His homespun witticisims have enlivened our classes since the Freshman year when Tom came here from Springdale Grammar School. Aside from his iovial- ity, T, B. has shown a tenacious spirit in all his studies. JERRY BILOVUS Van Dyke, Michigan A man is but what he knoweth. Jerry's buoyant spirit has made everyone anxious to claim him as a friend. Abiding by the Sparton rule of a sound mind and a sound body, Jerry be- came an above-average student and an outstanding athlete. Two years of varsity football and three of basketball is an admirable record in any book. GERALD DEL VAGLIO Stamford, Conn. A light heart lives long. With a sunny smile and cheerful personality Bull- Dog has made many friends. Jerry played tackle on the '48 eleven and at the same time tackled his school work with equal vigor. Good luck to a good fellow. EDWARD DeNlKE New Canaan, Conn. Live this day as if it were the last. Ed came to St. Basil's from New Canaan High School in his Junior year. He is noted for his sociability. ln his two years at St. Basil's Ed has shown en- thusiasm in sports, notably football where he held down the right-halfback assignment. JAMES GIBBONS Stamford, Conn. The most manifest sign of wisdom is a continual cheerfulness. Gib is known as an all-around athlete and a fine companion. His winning Irish smile could soften even the Faculty. Besides being a hard driving full- back on the varsity eleven, Jim was also a capable student. THOMAS KANE New Canaan, Conn. The first step to knowledge is to know that we are ignorant. Tom's genial manner has made him the best liked boy in the school. Transferring to St. Basil's from New Canaan High School in his Junior year, Tom established an enviable record both in studies and in sports. ln his two years of varsity basketball and one year of football he has proven his mettle. STANLEY KLIK Stamford, Conn. What we know here is very little, but what we are ignorant of is immense. Stan was a Iuminary of the Senior class. Entering St. Basil's from Holy Name Parochial School, he quickly became one of the boys . Stan foresees college days ahead and a course in engineering. BASIL H. LOSTEN Chesapeake City, Md. Watch and Pray. Milkman would be a credit to any school. Not only was he a good student but he also gave staunch support to the Quarterly, the Annual and numerous other activities. Our prediction for Basil: success. WILLIAM LUKACZYK Syracuse, N. Y. I love my beads. A scholar, a leader, a friend, and at all times a gentleman-these are the fine attributes of Bill Lukaczyk. Transferring to St. Basil's from Central High School in his Junior year, Luke quickly rose to the top of the class. Bill is admired by everyone for his untiring work on the Quarterly and the Annual. THOMAS LYNCH Stamford, Conn. Knowledge advances by steps, and not by leaps. Tom came to St. Basil's from Cloonan Junior High School. His is a laughing, easy-going nature. An all-around athlete, Tom sparked the intramural teams. A college education is on the list for Tom. ROBERT MAFFEI Stamford, Conn. He that sips of many arts, drinks of none. Ever since he entered St. Basil's in the Sophomore year, Mo has been a leader. Playing varsity foot- ball, basketball, and baseball, Bob laughed whole- heartedly into the sports program and really earned the Co-captaincy of the football team. JOSEPH MATHEWS Stamford, Conn. To thine own self be true .... Thou canst not then be false to any man. A brief glance at the achievements of this Blow will suffice: Quarterback, Sports writer, President of Senior Class, Editor of the Annual. CHARLES McGORTY Greenwich, Conn. Cheer up! the worst is yet to come! Mac entered St. Basil's four years ago from St. Mary's Parochial School. Sharp insight and the will to learn has made Charlie an asset to St. Basil's. His refined manner has made many lifelong friends for him. ROBERT MRUS Stamford, Conn. I'll find a way or make one. Moose , as he is known to his buddies, entered St. Basil's in his Sophomore year from Holy Name Parochial School. Bob was a diligent student and outshone the class in keeping out of trouble. THOMAS RICH Stamford, Conn. They are able because they think they are able. The world could use more fellows like Noisy . Cool and reposed, Tom never gets unduly excited. While keeping up with his school work, Tom also found time to become a proficient pianist. JOSEPH RYAN Stamford, Conn. The aim, if reached or not, makes great the life. Joe has kept in the above-average bracket as a student since his Freshman year, His ability as a vivid story teller was unexcelled. Joe will be re- membered by faculty and students alike as an all-around good fellow. JOHN SUCHOWER Ansonia, Conn. Friendship is the enemy of hatred. Consistency, and integrity are two of John's many fine qualities. Whether it be a Latin assignment, an article for the Quarterly or a missing piece of athletic equipment, he has always come through. John capably managed the football and basketball teams. RUSSELL ZANOWICK Auburn, New York Knowledge is a treasure, but practice is the key to it. Straightforward and unassuming, Russ has shown true school spirit during his four years at St. Basil's. Coming out for football as early as his Freshman year he merited the Co-captaincy of the team last fall. Judging from past performance Russ will do all right on the outside . NESTER ZAVRAS Stamford, Conn. To attain ...the Unattainable. Zav is the type of boy who makes one feel at ease. Always a gentleman, he was conscientious- ness in all his studies. Well liked by all the students, we know that he will go places. Nester plans to study business administration. ilu illilvmnrmm I ll-I D d y23 'I949 V 9' 0 rn armnn 'e Februar bv... f'- ll 2 5 Q 5 sm 'lk 1 ad! an-....'. 2 ' .11 .nr i 2 Tv .W M, - .256 .X 5?
