To the Graduates of 1953 My dear Young People, In the season of graduation it is not uncommon to see the picture of a graduate standing upon a threshold and looking upon a world of promise. The glittering rays of the rising sun add to the picture the warmth of welcome, and somewhere around the portal there is emblazoned the word OPPORTUNITY whilst in the distance DESTINY is spelled out. With your diploma in hand as a symbol of achieve- ment, you find OPPORTUNITY presenting itself to you in the world into which you are entering: but, remember, OPPORTUNITY is not a blind force nor a situation which presents itself by mere chance. The OPPORTUNITY which comes to you in life is the happening of all that is woven into the wisdom of Divine Providence, and it offers itself for your earthly advancement as well as for your eternal DESTINY. DESTINY1 What a word to propose to youth! If youth be engrossed only with the materialistic views of life, DESTINY extends itself only into the few years that lie ahead, but to the Catholic Graduate DESTINY is something which lies beyond the clouds and rests in the eternal home of Heaven. Your Catholic education will enable you to take your place alongside your fellow men in the world, but it also fits you for the acquisition of eternal happi- ness. Your OPPORTUNITY is filled with the blessings and graces from God. Your DESTINY by the aid of those graces, is in the Mansion of God. The wise person never loses sight of these truths. Please, therefore, remember them all your life, and never forget that you are made for Heaven. Likewise remember the saying of Saint Augustine, nGod made us, without usg but He will not save us without us.n May God and His ever-blessed Mother be gracious to you forever.
