Eight SAINT AUGUSTINE'S COLLEGE RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA 17611 Office of the President February 19, 1982 Dear Graduates: No two occasions for the conveying of the formal farewell to the Senior Class are ever the same. I am pleased to send you this letter which reflects my pride in you as young Black men and women, and hopefully it will convey to you some concerns about the fu- ture and your responsiblity to our people and to the world community. The fact that you have persevered to complete your course of study is indicative of your desire to become competitive and to attain the goals you have set for life. You have the values and skills which can be utilized to penetrate and dissolve the ignorance that exists in our society. These values and skills will enable you to serve as enlightened citizens and will also help you to further develop ideas which will nurture the mind and renew the soul. ' Graduation is a very important and serious moment in your lives. It signals the commenc- ing of a new direction in your development as a member of the human family. You begin at a time when the quality of life is plagued by high unemployment, devasting inflation, abject poverty, and unsettling signals which suggest a retreat from the commitment to help those who are in desperate need. These realities are dichotomized by the fact that you are the promise of tomorrow. It is in you that we place our trust. As society's leaders in the 21st century, you will conceive and implement practices which will alleviate many of the dismal vicissitudes of daily life. My young friends, this is an awesome responsibility, however, I am confident of your capabilities and your commitment to its challenges. ?' 'I il

Dr. Prezell R. Robinson is a unique College President. He is deeply committed to the mission of Saint Augustine's, and to the responsibility Saint Augustine's has to the immediate community and to the Nation as a whole. Dr. Robinson's travels have taken him all over the world, but he walks around the rectangle with pride and a sense of purpose. He has dined with the leaders of many nations, but he looks forward to dinners with the student body. His papers have been published nationallyg he has been the recipient of many Honorary Degrees, but he still submits articles to The Pen, and he was deeply moved when he became a member of the Sociology and Urban Affairs Club. Dr. Robinson is the type of man who inspires the best of all of us, not with mere words, but through example. We are indeed blessed to have him at Saint Augustine's. 1101 1 'gi DR. PREZELL R. ROBINSON

Graduates February 19, 1982 Page 2 I would be very relieved if I could offer solutions to these great maladies. The years you have spent at Saint Augustine's have left an indelible imprint on you. If you continue to hold fast to the principles and teachings which have been imparted to you, and begin to understand all that is implied when I say, Uto whom much is given, much is expected , I honestly believe that you shall be more than equal to all that lies ahead. Each experience in your past, whether it is happy or sad, successful or not, must constitute the foundation upon which you will set your course to unselfishly serve others. You are now recipients of the rich heritage of Saint Augustine's. Those who have gone before you have bequeathed to you an institution of which you can be proud. You are the newest Sons and Daughters charged with the responsibility to protect the good name of this institution and to uphold the principles of its Mission. It is my sincere hope, as you embark upon your journey, that you go with God, and that your lives will be abundantly fulfilled. Cordially your Prexy, PRRfjr Prezell R. Robinson, '46 President Nine
