The stone for the foundation and the north transcept was taken from the grove near the spring on Saint Augustine's ground. On Christmas Day 1895, the first service was held in the structure and daily services began on Quinquagesima Sunday 1896. The north transcept, erected in 1904, was built by students from the Masonary Class of the College. A Lich-Gate or Lych-Gate was dedicated at the entrance walk leading to the Chapel in 1903. The Lich-Gate, the entrance to the sacred precinct, was a roof to shelter the rood lcrossl which was placed above the gateway to mark the boundary of consecrated ground. The Saint Augustine's College Chapel has been named an Historic Site by The Wake Historic Sites Commission. Under the keen leadership of our President, Dr. Prezell R. Robinson, Saint Augustine's College has remained steadfast in her determination to educate Black youth, and to instill within them their obliga- tion to their people and to the world community. During his administration Saint Augustine's has grown in stature and prominence. Dr. Robinson is dedi- cated to the founding principles of Saint Augustine's and he serves her with love and endurance. He has done much to instill within all of us a sense of UFamily. I SAINT AUGUSTINE'S COLLEGE RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA 27611 Office of the President December 5, 1980 Dear Graduates: No two occasions for the conveying of the formal farewell to the Senior Class are ever the same. I am pleased to send you this missive which I hope will serve a construc- tive purpose. No one needs to remind you of the seriousness of this moment. Time would not allow me to set forward a sufficiently complete and intelligent presentation of the problems, challenges and uncertainties which await you as young people entering a society characterized by high unem- ployment, devastating inflation, and unsettling signals which suggest a retreat from the commit- ment to help those who are not so fortunate. I wish so much that I could offer solutions to these great problems. However, great problems and challenges are ill-served by easy answers. I can say that I honestly believe that you shall be more than equal to whatever lies ahead, for as long as you hold to the principles and teachings which have been imparted over your lifetimes, the most important of which is a con- stant faith in the power of a Supreme Being who ultimately determines all of our destinies. Each experience in your past, whether it was happy or sad, successful or not, should constitute the foundation on which you will set your course to diligently serve others. You join the ranks of thousands of other sons and Daughters of 'IThe Aug who have gone before you. Do your best to protect the good name of this great and proud institution, and I assure you, as a graduate myself, that it will never give you cause for shame. On behalf of the entire Saint Augustine's Family, we bid you farewell, glad tidings, and a safe and prosperous journey. is Cordially dp Prex , Ye- I 7 f Q1,5,c1,c,Ccff Pr iz . obinson, '46 Pr sident I I l'v'5.'1 'f CT E'f ' L He has impressed upon us the importance of learning and our re- sponsibility to learn. We accept the challenges he has laid before us and, with appreciation and love, we dedicate the 1981 edition of the FALCON to Mr. Forrest D. Toms Department of Education Those persons who serve Saint Augustine's as members of her Admin- istration and Staff are diligent in their efforts and are unyielding in their willingness to support the College as we approach the 21st cen- tury.
